North Korea is facing acute food crisis due to the worst harvest in a decade. In the wake of this emergency, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has cut food ration to a meagre 300 grams per person. Four in ten North Koreans are chronically short of food and further cuts to already minimal rations are expected.
UN carried out a food assessment at Pyongyang’s request and found 10.1 million people were suffering from severe food insecurity, “meaning they do not have enough food till the next harvest.”
The current situation is extremely serious but the word “famine” is not being used for the crisis.
