47 Peacocks Found Dead Near Lake In Madurai, Forest Officials Suspect Poisoning

As many as 47 peacocks were found dead near alake at Madurantakam in Madurai district, Tamil Nadu on Saturday. The peacockswere suspected to be poisoned, the police said. The carcasses which were seen and reported to police by villagers were sent for post-mortem.

S Arumugam, range officer of Madurai Wildlife Range, said the birds were suspected to have been poisoned as they were eating paddy from the fields. “Those who had poisoned the peacocks will be arrested as the birds are protected under the wildlife protection act. The punishment for killing them is up to seven years of imprisonment,” he said.
