Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas not a candidat for French FA presidency

Speaking to France Info Lyon president Jean Michel-Aulas has confirmed that he won’t be candidate for the French FA presidency following the stepping back of Noël Le Graët via an unprecedented executive committee meeting yesterday. Instead, the promptly nicknamed ‘JMA’ says he is posing himself to become president of France’s woman’s league – apt for a president that has overseen one of the most successful teams in women’s football at Lyon.

Michel-Aulas said that “In all periods of transition, there are always candidates for the new post,” yet he explained that “I was asked about the position as FFF president,  I answered that the only position that interested me was that of president of the woman’s’ league.” Lyon’s president then went on to say that his priority was concerning women’s football, emphasising that “for me, the development of women’s football is up to my ambitions.”

As Noël Le Graët steps back from his role as president of the French FA pending the outcome of a government audit into his conduct as president and the functioning of the association, focus switches onto the future of French football. However, in the meantime, current vice-president Phillipe Diallo is ensuring the interim as president.

Lyon reach agreement for Dejan Lovren return

According to L’Équipe, Olympique Lyonnais have reached an agreement with Croatian defender Dejan Lovren, who is set to arrive at the club within the next few days – there was six months remaining on his contract with Zenith Saint-Petersburg.

The former Liverpool man is set to return to the club where he played from 2010 to 2013, and is set to become the first major signing of the Laurent Blanc era. The new Lyon boss only yesterday revealed that he wanted players with “experience, aggression, and character” during his press conference before facing Clermont tomorrow – as it looks as if he got his wish, with Lovren expected to sign in the next couple of days. They will however have to reach an agreement with Zenit St Petersburg over a small transfer fee with six months remaining on the contract of the Croate.

Lovren made 72 appearances for Lyon in his previous spell in Ligue before a move to Premier League Southampton for the 2013/14 season, after which he moved to Liverpool until 2020.

Brest’s Jere Uronen closing in on Schalke move

Schalke 04 Sporting Director Peter Knäbel has indicated today that the Bundesliga club were closing in on the signing of Brest full-back Jere Uronen, with a verbal agreement in place with both the players himself and the Breton club.

Should all go to plan, the former Helsingborgs man will complete his move to the other side of the Rhine tomorrow.

PSG consider Arsenal target Warren Zaïre-Emery to be off the market

PSG youth products Warren Zaïre-Emery (16) and Ismaël Gharbi (18) are attracting interest from many European outfits, RMC Sport report.

Gharbi, a Franco-Spanish attacking midfielder, has played twice with Christophe Galtier’s side this season. He came off the bench during PSG’s away loss at Lens and then registered one assist in a Coupe de France win against third-tier Châteauroux. The Paris native particularly impressed in UEFA Youth League where he scored six goals and delivered one assist in six matches. Ligue 1’s bottom-placed outfit Angers, Ligue 2 side Metz and an unnamed Dutch club are all looking to acquire his services on a six-month loan, RMC report. However, PSG reportedly are not willing to let go a player who may gain game time following Pablo Sarabia’s transfer to Wolverhampton.

Zaïre-Emery’s potential suitors seem to belong to another category. An elegant, composed and gifted midfielder, 16-year-old Zaïre-Emery was arguably PSG’s best outfield player on Sunday when the Ligue 1 leaders fell at Rennes. Christophe Galtier and the PSG management are said to greatly value him, and consider him to be untransferable for the foreseeable future. Arsenal are reportedly “very insistent” on bringing in the midfielder, who is represented by Jorge Mendes.

Marcus Thuram increasingly open to January transfer

Téléfoot journalist Saber Desfarges is reporting that Borussia Mönchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram (25) is increasingly receptive to the idea of leaving the Bundesliga club this January.

At the beginning of the season, Thuram’s intention was to remain at the German club until the end of the season. With his contract expiring this summer, he would then move on from Mönchengladbach in order to take on a new challenge.

However, with many top clubs circling, Thuram is now reportedly more open to leaving the club this winter. Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Inter Milan have all been strongly linked with the forward, who played a prominent role for France during the recent World Cup in Qatar.

Thuram’s chances of a move to PSG may have decreased in recent days, with Christophe Galtier confirming that he is looking to replace Pablo Sarabia, who left to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, with a profile similar to that of the Spaniard. Thuram, a more typical number nine, doesn’t fit that mould.

Whilst no clubs have made significant advances on Thuram yet, the player’s stance on a January move will likely increase the chance of a transfer this month.

Atletico Madrid make loan offer for Marseille’s Jonathan Clauss

L’Équipe are reporting that Atletico Madrid have made a loan offer for Olympique de Marseille right-back Jonathan Clauss, although the bid has little chance of being accepted.

Clauss only join Marseille back in the summer from RC Lens. The move marked a meteoric rise for the defender, with the Frenchman also being called up by Didier Deschamps. However, despite making his Les Bleus debut back in 2022, he ultimately didn’t make Deschamps’ World Cup squad in what was a surprise omission. He was a victim of Deschamps’ decision to revert back to a defensively-oriented back four.

However, Clauss continues to excel for the club, and at wing-back, has been one the standout players in a strong Marseille side that are currently third in Ligue 1. His performances have caught the eye of Atletico Madrid, who have made a loan offer with an option to buy for €9m at the end of the season.

This offer is unlikely to receive a positive response from the La Liga club’s point of view. The player only arrived in the summer and has a contract that runs until 2025, and all parties are currently satisfied with how things are going.

Andreaw Gravillon closing in on move to Torino from Reims

Gianluca Di Marzio reports this afternoon that defender Andreaw Gravillon’s move from Reims to Torino is now a done deal, with the Guadeloupe international set to seal his return to Italy this afternoon.

The 24-year-old will move to the other side of the Alps on an initial loan deal with a permanent clause, which would then see him put pen to paper on a deal running until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.

The defender, who came through the youth ranks at Inter, also spent time at Benevento, Pescara, Sassuolo and Ascoli, before a loan spell at Lorient convinced the Champagne side to sign him in 2021. After making 26 appearances during the 2021/22 term, the defender has seen his playing time decrease under new manager Will Still, who has overseen a 12-game unbeaten streak at the helm since taking over from Óscar García back in October.

He began his senior career at Olympique de Marseille, where he made 160 appearances in the top flight of French football between 2007 and 2015. During this period, in which he was also sent out on loan to FC Lorient, he accrued a total of 44 goals and 18 assists.

Since his departure from France and before his arrival in Qatar, he spent spells in Wales, England, and Turkey. Notably, he played in the Premier League for both Swansea City and West Ham United. His last spell in Britain was with Swansea in the Championship, where he accrued 31 goals and 11 assists across 87 appearances in England’s second division.

He joins an improved Nottingham Forest side that currently sit 13th in the Premier League after 20 games. Recently knocked out by Manchester United in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, and in the wake of Taiwo Awoniyi’s injury, Forest seek a different type of attacking threat to bolster their forward line during the second half of the season.
