NXT was back in Full Sail University this week. You may remember that they were in Brooklyn last weekend for the usual NXT Takeover/SummerSlam festivities. This is the first episode in a huge night of tapings that took place recently. This episode in particular featured Bobby Roode’s final NXT match before joining the main roster full time. He went up against hie longtime rival Roderick Strong. Let’s not waste anymore time here.
The show starts with SAnitY members land a couple of security guards laid out in the parking lot of Full Sail University. William Regal comes out and screams for medical personnel to arrive. It is unclear who did this exactly, but the camera did show three figures walking off in the background (likely Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, and Adam Cole).
New NXT Champion Drew McIntyre came down to the ring for a promo, he received a nice reaction from the people in Full Sail. He said that NXT was his life and that everything he ever worked for was earned when he became NXT Champion. He acknowledged that wrestlers were already challenging for the title just moments after he won it. McIntyre said that this was fine and he put Cole, O’Reilly, Fish and the entire roster on notice. He challenged anyone backstage to come down to the ring and face him like a man. Roderick Strong came down to the ring. He said that he will beat Bobby Roode later in the show, and he said he wanted a shot at the title. McIntyre said that he’s glad Strong challenged him like a man, he just hopes he’s ready to get knocked out like a man.
After showing up on Smackdown, Bobby Roode reminded everybody last week that he will be wrestling on NXT to finish his business with Drew McIntyre and Strong. He promised that he will make Smackdown “glorious” after he has concluded his NXT run properly.
They showed photos of Asuka’s collarbone injury. She will be back on NXT next week with an important message.
Peyton Royce vs. Ruby Riot –
Three weeks or so ago, Ruby defeated Billie Kay in a match. Royce took the mic after the match and said that Ruby would never be “iconic,” which Riot comically dismissed as no big deal.
Royce decided to take on Riot here. It began with some armbars, and Riot worked Royce’s arm for a good portion of the match. Peyton took over and started throwing Ruby around, kicking and punching her the whole time. Riot was tossed outside of the ring. When Ruby got back in, she hit a dropkick and kicked her again in the corner for a near fall.
Riot went up to the top of one of the ring posts and was about to hit some sort of maneuver until Billie Kay hopped up on the apron and distracted her. This allowed Royce to take advantage, and she hit a Death Valley Driver for a near fall. Riot kicking out shocked Peyton. Ruby almost instantly then hit a powerbomb, but only scored a two-count. Royce rolled out and spoke with Billie for a while, but then Ruby hit a TOPE SUICIDA to take the two Australians out.
Royce and Ruby eventually made their way back into the ring. Riot tried to grab Royce, but the latter managed to hold onto the ring skirt, which caused the referee to freak out and fix it. Meanwhile, Billie Kay pulled Ruby out of the ring and gave her a boot to the face while the ref was distracted. Royce then hit the Fisherman Suplex for the victory.
Winner: Peyton Royce
William Regal was speaking backstage about Fish, O’Reilly and Cole when Kassius Ohno barged into his office. He said that he was healed up from his “injuries” and wanted to face Hideo Itami again. Regal made the match official for next week. Ohno said that he wanted the match to be a no-disqualification match. Regal made it so.
Heavy Machinery vs. Camian Awhield & Edwin Negran –
This was a total squash for Heavy Machinery. Otis started the match by slamming around Awhile. He tagged in Tucker Knight, and together they both ran into Ahwield’s head with the monstrous bellies. Negran got tagged in, and Knight overpowered both of the wrestlers with a cross body. Tucker hit a Thesz Press on one member of the team before Otis hit the Compactor on the other, who landed on top of his partner. This allowed the team to get the quick win.
Winners: Heavy Machinery
The announcers reminded us of when Lars Sullivan attacked No Way Jose last week before their match started. Backstage, William Regal talks to Lars. He says that because he has beaten up three tag team partners, he will take on three wrestlers next week in a handicap match. Sullivan said nothing and just walked away.
Andrade “Cien” Almas will take on Cezar Bononi in a rematch next week.
Roderick Strong vs. Bobby Roode –
This is it! After weeks and weeks of buildup, we have what will probably be Bobby Roode’s last match in NXT. Fans were chanting “Thank you, Bobby” before the match even started. This match has been hyped up for weeks, so can Strong avenge his family and beat Bobby Roode?
Roode mocked Strong early on and tried to do his “glorious” pose, but Strong shoved him down to the canvas. Bobby began beating him down in the corner, but Strong countered with a backbreaker. Roode tried to escape, but he hit another backbreaker in the process. Roode then countered when he managed to shove Strong into the ring post and down to the floor. Finally, Bobby began running Roddy into the steel steps and targeting his own back.
Back in the ring, Roode kicked Strong over and over again. This was Roode’s turn to get some offense in on Roddy. Even as Roode was beating Strong, he could barely manage to keep him down for a one-count whenever he attempted to pin him. Roode bounced off of the ropes and ran right into a gutbuster from Strong.
Roddy then hit a lariat on Roode before hitting him with some brutal chops and strikes in the corner of the ring. Roode managed to break free from Strong’s offense for just a few seconds before Strong managed to pull out, you guessed it: a backbreaker. Unlike his previous attempts, Roderick actually did come extremely close to winning with this one. After scoring another near fall with a powerbomb, Strong transitioned the move into a Boston Crab submission, but Roode got to the ropes in time. Roode then sent Strong outside.
Strong immediately ran back into the ring, but got hit with a Fireman’s Carry by Roode for a near fall. Once both men got back to their feet, Roddy clocked Bobby with a series of back elbows until Bobby managed to hit a colossal spinebuster. It seemed like Roddy was down for good, so Roode did his “glorious” pose and tried to hit the Glorious DDT, but Roddy managed to reverse the move and slam Roode down to the canvas. Next, he hit a knee strike on Roode in the corner. He went for a pin, and got another extremely close 2 3/4s-count.
Desperate, Bobby went up to the top of the ring post, and Strong eventually joined him up there. Roode elbowed Strong down to the canvas, but Roderick connected with an enzuigiri kick. Finally, Strong managed to hit a tremendous superplex from the top rope on poor Bobby’s glorious back. Despite all of this, Roddy still could not put the former NXT Champion away. They hit some strikes on each other until Roderick nearly hit the referee. When Roddy turned around, Bobby hit the Glorious DDT. It seemed like the match was over, but Strong put his foot on the bottom rope at the last possible second to save himself the match.
Roode was floored by this, and once they both got back to their feet, Strong connected with two high knees and a backbreaker. The crowd got fired up at this point, and Strong got Roode back up again. He blew him a kiss and hit just one more backbreaker to finish Bobby Roode for good.
Winner: Roderick Strong
After the match, Drew McIntyre came out on the stage and held up his NXT Championship as he stared as Roderick Strong in the ring. This didn’t last long though, because Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, and Kyle O’Reilly reemerged, and Cole layed out McIntyre with a DDT. The three gloated for a while before being chased out of Full Sail University by William Regal and a team of security guards.
Alas, it would seem as though the “Glorious era” of NXT is no more. This is now the era of Drew McIntyre, Roderick Strong, and this new stable featuring Adam Cole and ReDRagon. Next week’s show will feature Hideo Itami and Kassius Ohno going at it in the main event match, and it will also have a huge announcement concerning Asuka’s future in NXT. Check back here next week, because that show is sure to get people talking. I’ll see you NXT time!
