US sets record with 1M coronavirus tests conducted, well short of what experts say is needed

The U.S. set a new record Saturday with more than 1 million coronavirus tests conducted in one day, although experts say that number is still much lower than what’s needed to get control of the pandemic.

The U.S. completed 1,061,411 diagnostic tests on Saturday, according to The COVID Tracking Project. But several experts told Reuters that the U.S. needs 6 million to 10 million per day in order to get ahold of the outbreaks across the country.

Single day testing numbers had decreased in recent weeks, with the U.S. testing an average 650,000 people a day during the week ending Sept. 13. In July, the U.S. tested an average of more than 800,000 people daily.

A shortage of testing materials has made identifying those with COVID-19 difficult and has led to hours-long lines to get tested in certain areas like Houston and Miami when cases were surging there.

In mid-September, a Reuters analysis determined a majority of states, 27, had positive testing rates more than 5 percent. The World Health Organization categorizes more than 5 percent to be of concern.

The U.S. has confirmed more than 6.7 million COVID-19 and 199,421 fatalities, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The country has counted a seven-day average of 40,668 new cases per day, according to The New York Times.
