Pep Guardiola wants £50m-rated star to bolster Man City attack, also eyed by Arsenal and Chelsea

Despite already boasting a potent attack, Man City boss Pep Guardiola reportedly wants to snap up Roma winger Cengiz Under who is valued at around £50m.

The reigning Premier League champions have scored 45 goals in just 16 league games so far this season, giving them the most clinical scoring record in the top flight by some distance.

Guardiola can call upon the likes of Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez to name but a few, and yet it’s reported that the Spanish tactician is eyeing another attacking reinforcement.

According to The Express, City could line up a bid for £50m-rated Roma winger Under, who is also said to have attracted interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

It’s easy to see why those clubs are monitoring him too, as Arsenal’s lack of width and Chelsea’s lack of quality depth in the wide positions in particular would make Under an ideal signing for either of those two clubs.

Nevertheless, they could all potentially miss out if Guardiola can convince City to splash out, with Under doing more than enough to warrant such interest with his form for the Giallorossi since last season.

The 21-year-old has continued to impress this year with four goals and five assists in 17 appearances in all competitions, as his quality from the right flank has been a crucial factor in Roma’s attack.

He provided a recent reminder of his quality with a stunning goal against Inter, as seen in the video below, and that offers a glimpse into the attacking threat that he poses in the final third along with his creativity to assist for others.

Guardiola doesn’t seemingly need another attacking option, but the report suggests that he’s keen on Under and so time will tell if they win the battle for his signature.

American golf sees a resurgence of youth

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — A few generations before Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas were even born, Ford Motor Co. put together a group of golfers known as the "Young Thunderbirds" to promote the rising stars on the PGA Tour.

"We played a lot of practice rounds together," said Johnny Miller, part of that group that included Lanny Wadkins, Jerry Heard, Jim Simon and Grier Jones. "You just push each other, and we separated ourselves from all the other young players."

What caused Miller to think back to the early 1970s was what he saw at East Lake for the Tour Championship, and what he will see this week at Liberty National for the Presidents Cup. The only difference was a car company promotion — and the size of the group.

Thomas won the FedEx Cup when he pulled away from Spieth over the final hour. They won the final two majors of the year. Both are 24 and have been close friends since they first met at a junior event in Texas that Spieth won 10 years ago.

Xander Schauffele won the Tour Championship by saving par four times on the back nine and closing with a birdie. He ended his rookie season with two victories, though it was too late to be considered for the Presidents Cup. He turns 24 later this year and is — or was — an unheralded member of that fabled high school class of 2011.

"It's not just the three of us," Schauffele said. "I think I've always been on the outside looking in. You've got Justin, you've got Jordan, you've got Daniel Berger, you've got Emiliano Grillo. Hideki (Matsuyama) is also young. Jon Rahm is even younger than us. It's kind of weird being in their company. I said I got annoyed talking about them so much before, but yeah, they push me. And I can't thank them enough."

Complete records on the PGA Tour date to 1970, but this one was no less staggering. Players under the age of 25 won 18 times this season, shattering the previous mark of 10 set in 2000. And the previous record deserves an asterisk because Tiger Woods won nine of those events at age 24.

Throw in anyone in their 20s, and they accounted for 28 victories, or 58 percent of PGA Tour events.

The Presidents Cup features six players in their 20s on both teams. The Americans haven't been this stacked with youth since before these guys were born.

Woods was the only American in his 20s at the 2004 Ryder Cup and the 2005 Presidents Cup. Then he turned 30, and the Americans had no one in their 20s at The K Club in Ireland for the 2006 Ryder Cup.

The U.S. team at Liberty National has Spieth, Thomas, Berger, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed.

"I think they're in pretty good shape in the future with those guys," Miller said.

That's how it was in 1998 at the Presidents Cup in Australia, when the first five qualifiers for that U.S. team — David Duval, Woods, Jim Furyk, Justin Leonard and Phil Mickelson — were all in their 20s. That figured to be the core of American golf for years to come, and it nearly was.

Duval lost his way through injury and confidence after his British Open title in 2001, while Leonard made the putt heard 'round the world at Brookline a year later until his team appearances became more inconsistent.

"It is such a young game right now," Thomas said Tuesday. "I was also thinking, 'Is it going to stay young?' We're going to be in our 30s at some point. But if we can keep playing well, stay competitive, keep pushing each other … I feel like there's a good chance that all of us — at least four or five of us — will continue hopefully play on a lot of these teams for consecutive years.

"But there's going to a lot of others coming out of college who are going to want to take our place."

The relationships they have forged certainly help, and this goes beyond Instagram posts from their spring breaks.

Woods and Mickelson never hung out in the Bahamas, much less the locker room, unless they were playing a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup. They also are about 5 years apart in age. Most of this generation grew up facing each other no matter where they were from because of how organized junior golf has become.

U.S. captain Steve Stricker can see this group a decade from now, at least a chunk of it. He knows as well as anyone that form can disappear. So can good health.

But it's the relationship he finds so intriguing.

"When one guy does something well, wins a tournament, it's almost a shot in the arm to another guy and he goes out and plays really well," Stricker said. "It's really cool, and a great outlook for USA team golf."

Out-of-favour Barcelona star given green light to seal transfer away from Camp Nou

Barcelona have reportedly given Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen the green light to seal a transfer away from the Camp Nou, with a move to a bottom-half Premier League team a possible destination for the player.

Vermaelen has been vastly out-of-favour at the Camp Nou ever since he joined the club from Arsenal in the summer of 2014.

The Belgian international has only managed to clock up a total of 45 appearances in his four years in Spain, a total that we’re sure the player himself is hugely disappointed with.

The former Arsenal man did well for Barca during Samuel Umtiti’s absence in the second half of last season, however this doesn’t seem like it was enough for Vermaelen to save his Barcelona career.

Don Balon are noting that the Blaugrana have given Vermaelen the go-ahead to leave the club, and that a potential destination for the player is a bottom-half Premier League side.

The report also notes that Vermaelen’s contract with Ernesto Valverde’s side will not be renewed before it runs out, thus it seems like the defender’s time at the Camp Nou is definitely coming to an end.

Vermaelen’s been given the ‘ok’ to seal a move away from Barcelona

A move away from Barcelona could be what Vermaelen needs to reignite his career, as it doesn’t look like the 33-year-old will be landing a first team spot with Barca anytime soon given the options the club already have at centre back.

And it seems like Vermaelen may be forced into that decision given the fact that the club aren’t going to renew his deal with them if Don Balon’s report is anything to go off.

OFFICIAL: Club confirm world-record Manchester United bid for in-demand superstar

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed Manchester United have launched a £95million transfer bid for in-demand defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Red Devils need a top class central defender like Koulibaly, who has been linked strongly with them and other big clubs in recent times.

The Senegal international would clearly be a big upgrade on what United currently have in their ranks, with MUFC also being linked with similarly world class names like Toby Alderweireld as January approaches.

The latest on Koulibaly, however, is that United launched an official £95m offer for the 27-year-old shortly before Jose Mourinho was sacked by the club last week.

De Laurentiis says Napoli rejected the bid, which would have been a world record for a defender, breaking the £75m fee Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk last winter.

England's Tyrrell Hatton wins Italian Open for 2nd straight title

MONZA, Italy (AP) — Tyrrell Hatton sunk a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the Italian Open on Sunday for his second European Tour victory in two weeks.

Last week, Hatton retained his title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the storied Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.

Now the Englishman is up to fifth in the Race to Dubai rankings.

It looked like Hatton was heading for a three-man playoff before he rolled his final putt into the bottom of the cup and unleashed a series of fist pumps to celebrate the Rolex Series victory.

"I had a good feeling standing over it, even though my hands were shaking and my knees were shaking," Hatton said.

A day after celebrating his 26th birthday, Hatton birdied five of the last seven holes for a bogey-free 65 to finish at 21 under.

"It was a battle with myself today," said Hatton, who had a slow front nine. "But my caddie kept saying it would come in the end and it did. … I got a hot streak with the putter, which helps a lot."

Fellow Englishman Ross Fisher and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand tied for second, one stroke behind, while third-round leader Matt Wallace finished fourth at 19 under.

Defending champion and home favorite Francesco Molinari finished in a tie for sixth.

Hatton took home a first-place check of around $1.1 million, the biggest prize in an increased purse of $7 million this year as part of the buildup to the 2022 Ryder Cup outside Rome.

Crowds were large throughout the week at the Golf Club Milano, next to Monza's Formula One circuit.

AC Milan transfer news: €79m offer touted while winger eyed in January window

AC Milan are reportedly set to launch a big-money offer to prise Sergej Milinkovic-Savic away from Lazio, while Yannick Carrasco is also on their radar.

The 23-year-old has struggled to hit top form so far this season, bagging just three goals and an assist in 22 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit.

Nevertheless, there is no doubting the potential and talent that he possesses, and that was showcased prior to the winter break with this stunning goal against Torino, as seen in the video below.

Despite his struggles though, it’s reported by MilanNews.it, via the paper edition of Il Messaggero, that Milan are still eager to sign him and will look to offer an initial €9m loan deal with a €70m obligation to buy with the instalments spread across three years.

Given Lazio are currently in a battle with the Rossoneri to secure fourth place and Champions League qualification, it seems highly unlikely that they’ll be willing to sell one of their biggest assets to a direct rival in January.

With that in mind, Milan may well have to wait until the summer, but it remains to be seen whether or not they can afford the figures touted above given that they have well-documented ongoing FFP issues to consider too.

While key injury setbacks have exposed it further, there is no denying though that the Italian giants need to reinforce their midfield moving forward in order to compete at the top level and it would appear as though they are looking to find a solution.

As for January, Calciomercato report that Milan are looking to snap up Yannick Carrasco on loan from Dalian Yifang as the Belgian international is keen to secure a return to Europe.

With Samu Castillejo and Suso as their only real natural winger options, Gennaro Gattuso would surely welcome additional firepower in that department, with Carrasco previously showcasing his quality for Monaco and Atletico Madrid.

In turn, he could prove to be a crucial addition in the second half of the campaign to help Milan achieve their objective of returning to Europe’s top table.

‘It’s up to me’ – Chelsea talisman Hazard addresses Real Madrid transfer speculation

Chelsea winger Eden Hazard has once again spoken of his admiration for Real Madrid as a club but remains coy on his Chelsea future.

The Belgian has been heavily linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu in recent months and even admitted back in October that he harbours ‘dreams’ of one day playing for the European champions – as per BBC Sport.

Madrid are on the lookout for a new galactico after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure during the summer transfer window, as the team has struggled to maintain their high standards in his absence, slipping down to fourth in La Liga with five defeats to their name already.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League after 16 matches of the 2018-19 campaign and currently sit eight points behind leaders Liverpool.

Hazard has been instrumental in the team’s recent success and is their top scorer with seven league goals this term, but he has come out to address the Real Madrid speculation on Monday.

As seen on Twitter below, he told RMC: “I have always liked Real Madrid as a club, with or without Zidane. At the end of this year, I have 1 year left on my Chelsea contract. We will see, it’ll be up to me to make the decision.”

The 27-year-old’s latest comments are typical of his vague approach to this transfer saga, as he seems to be leaning towards a switch to Madrid without actually confirming his intentions, which will surely annoy Chelsea fans across England.

Hazard is without a doubt the club’s most gifted player and perhaps even the most gifted in the Premier League, but if he is not fully committed to the cause at Stamford Bridge, it is better for both parties that he leaves in 2019.

The Belgium international would surely thrive at the Bernabeu but it is unlikely he could match the goalscoring exploits of Ronaldo, given the fact he has yet to score more than 16 goals in a 38 game domestic season.

This particular story is threatening to rumble on until at least the end of the current season and Chelsea supporters can only hope that it doesn’t derail the team’s chances of winning silverware over the next few months.

PGA Jr. League golfer Jack Spencer put on a putting contest to raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — The clink of the putter meeting the golf ball on a sunny Labor Day morning sounded like aid to victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. Dozens of people took to the green at Briarbrook Country Club in Carl Junction for a putting competition organized by 11-year-old Jack Spencer, a local golfer who decided to do something about the destruction he saw on TV.

"We watched a lot of coverage of Hurricane Harvey," said Kristi Spencer, Jack's mother. "He was really impacted by the stories he was hearing."

Over the past 10 days, as footage of floodwaters and rescues came across the the Spencer family's TV set, Jack started brainstorming ways to help.

At first, he wanted to donate his piggybank money. But after a day mulling it over at school in Carl Junction, he suggested a fundraiser at Briarbrook Country Club, where he spent the summer on the links.

The club holds an annual Labor Day tournament; Jack planned to offer the golfers a few warmup putts in exchange for a donation to the Houston recovery effort.

Many of the golfers who participated in the tournament already knew Jack, a member of club's PGA Jr. Team, and just about every one of them stopped to participate in the fundraiser.

When a putt went in, Jack cheered: "Racking them up!"

"I didn't think there would be this many people," he said. "I guess it's for a good cause."

To those who have gotten to know Jack on the course, his do-good streak was no surprise.

"He's a really good player, and he's always wanting to help the younger kids," said Mark Tackkett, golf professional at Briarbrook, adding, "He's got a great sense of duty. It's something when a kid that young comes and says, 'Hey, we need to do something.'"

Fran Englert, of Carl Junction, said she was glad to lend a hand to Houston by entering the putting competition.

"We know what it's like here in Joplin to step up during a storm," she said. "That's the least we can do."

Half of her $5 entry fee will be donated to Habitat for Humanity in Houston, a nonprofit that builds homes for low-income residents, many of whom have been displaced by flooding. Participants were also allowed to purchase mulligans for $10.

Spencer was surprised by the turnout at Monday's event, which yielded a donation of $1,000.

"It feels good to know that the money is going to a good place," he said.

Agent of €20m Arsenal transfer target in London as speculation intensifies

Reports suggest that the agent of Arsenal transfer target Ever Banega is in London amid ongoing transfer rumours linking him with a move to the Gunners.

Unai Emery seemingly addressed his midfield this past summer with the signings of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi.

However, while the Spanish tactician added plenty of physicality and defensive solidity, he arguably still lacks an individual capable of providing creativity in a deeper role.

Coupled with the fact that Aaron Ramsey looks set to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer, it’s a concern that could become more prominent ahead of next season.

With that in mind, Arsenal have been linked with a move for Banega, and according to Mundo Deportivo, his agent is currently in London which has led to talk of a move to the Emirates intensifying.

It’s added that he has a €20m release clause in his contract which Arsenal would have to meet, and so it remains to be seen if the reported visit to England is indeed linked with a possible move to reunite with Emery after previous spells working together at Valencia and Sevilla.

Banega, 30, is vastly experienced both at club and international level, and is known for his classy technical quality in midfield along with his ability to create and dictate play from a deeper role.

That is an area in which Arsenal could certainly improve, and so time will tell if they can secure a deal to sign the Argentine ace.

Should a move materialise as early as January, it would certainly give them a timely boost in their pursuit of a top-four finish this season. Arsenal currently sit in fifth place in the standings, just two points adrift of Chelsea who sit directly above them.

The other two have also been hit with hefty fines of €100,000 each.
