Bad news for Barcelona: Touted £200m transfer target makes big decision on future

Amid ongoing speculation linking Neymar with a return to Barcelona, reports in France have claimed that he wants to stay with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 26-year-old moved to the French capital last year and has gone on to score 44 goals in just 49 games while winning a whole host of domestic honours.

Injuries have limited his influence though, while as noted by Calciomercato, transfer rumours have never been far away when it comes to a possible return to Barcelona after such a successful stint at the Nou Camp.

His move to France arguably hasn’t delivered the results desired on an individual level, as Neymar wasn’t in contention for the Ballon d’Or this year, while PSG continued to falter in the Champions League last season despite Neymar leading their early charge.

In turn, it’s understandable if a possible return to Barcelona is desired, with The Express reporting that Barca had reportedly been prepared to splash out up to £200m on securing a reunion with their former Brazilian superstar.

However, the report adds, via Le 10 Sport, that Neymar has scuppered any hopes of that materialising in the near future at least, as he has decided that he wishes to stay with the Ligue 1 champions.

It remains to be seen how accurate that is ahead of the summer, but with the opportunity to continue to be a leading figure for PSG alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Gianluigi Buffon, it could be enough to persuade him to stay for the long-term project.

The French giants made it through to the knockout stage of the Champions League in midweek, and so perhaps much will depend on whether or not they can finally prove capable of mounting a serious bid to win the competition this season.

For now though, it appears as though if Barcelona had any hopes of prising Neymar back, he’s not interested in such a move for now.

Manchester United star makes transfer u-turn after recent development

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has reportedly decided to snub a potential transfer to Real Madrid.

The England international had been linked with a surprise possible move to the Spanish giants after a difficult start to the season under Jose Mourinho.

However, Rashford is one of a few players to improve immensely since Mourinho’s departure, with the whole club looking revitalised under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And according to the Sun, Rashford is now set to reject any approaches from Real to leave Old Trafford as he wants to stay at the club after their recent improvement.

The 21-year-old is one of the biggest young talents in Europe and fans will be delighted to see United hold on to a homegrown talent.

Chelsea given choice of two replacements as Eden Hazard Real Madrid transfer agreed

Chelsea reportedly look set to lose Eden Hazard in a transfer to Real Madrid and have two potential replacements they could bring in – Marco Asensio or Christian Pulisic.

According to Don Balon, Hazard has agreed on a move to Madrid, though Chelsea still need to sign it off either this January or in the summer transfer window.

CFC will no doubt be eager to land a big name to replace the Belgium international, who is one of the best players in the world and who has been hugely important to the club for a number of years now.

Don Balon claim Chelsea could land Asensio from Real Madrid as part of a deal if Hazard is allowed to leave this January.

On the other hand, the Blues could also target Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund to give him some time to bed in ahead of letting Hazard go in the summer.

Marc Leishman, Adam Bland lead Australian PGA; Sergio Garcia six behind

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) — Marc Leishman took advantage of an early start to shoot a 7-under 65 and move into a share of the second-round lead at the Australian PGA Championship on Friday.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia was six strokes behind after a 71 while Adam Scott missed the cut by two shots after bogeying four of six holes on the back nine at Royal Pines and shooting 74.

Leishman started on the 10th hole and had four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys on his first nine before birdieing three of his first five holes after the turn.

He's on 12-under 132 and tied with Adam Bland, who shot 66 on a morning of good scoring conditions — soft greens and little wind.

Greg Chalmers (66) was two strokes behind in third.

"When you're on a run like that and playing well, you sort of can afford to be aggressive," Leishman said. "If you make a few mistakes, you feel like you can make some birdies."

Defending champion Harold Varner III of the United States, who teed off with Leishman, shot 66 and was five strokes behind.

Varner said he got swept along with Leishman's strong play.

"I'm going to need some help, though, because if he (Leishman) keeps playing like that, we're in trouble," Varner said. "Everyone in this field is in trouble."

Garcia had an up-and-down day with two birdies and a double bogey on the front nine before three birdies and two bogeys on the back.

"It wasn't my best day out there," Garcia said. "I hit a couple of really nice putts, but probably a little bit tired, physically and mentally. Because of that my golf game wasn't as sharp as I would like it to be. But I guess the good thing is we still fought hard, we stayed in it …"

Mike Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, shot 69 and was 10 strokes behind.

Scott's return to a long-handled putter wasn't successful. He used a broomstick putter when he won the Masters in 2013, but switched to a short putter after a ban on anchoring the putter against the body began in 2016.

A winner of the Australian PGA in 2013 and runner-up in a playoff the following year at Royal Pines, Scott started the day at 1 under but missed at least four close putts on the back nine.

It ended a disappointing season for the father of two, who has slumped to a seven-year rankings low of 30th in the world. He last missed the cut at the Australian PGA in 2010, a year in which he fell as low as 48.

"I found it difficult switching on and switching off the last few months," Scott said. "It's been hard not to get frustrated by just playing a bit average.

"I spent most of the time (Friday) in the trees … I've got to lift my ball striking up. I lose too many shots and that's the strength of my game."

Unai Emery closing in on key Arsenal transfer target valued at €20m

Arsenal are reportedly making progress in their bid to sign Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega in a move that could cost them €20m.

The Gunners remain in the hunt for a top four finish in the Premier League in Unai Emery’s first season in charge, as they sit just two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea after 19 games.

SEE MORE: Talks held: Arsenal could receive January bid of up to €20m for star ahead of expected exit

In turn, January reinforcements could be crucial to help them achieve their objective, and coupled with the fact that Aaron Ramsey’s current contract will expire at the end of the season with no renewal in sight it seems, they will have to fill a void in their midfield regardless.

Although Emery moved to bring in the likes of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi this past summer, there is arguably still a lack of creative quality in that department, with many of his midfield options offering a physical presence and defensive solidity.

With that in mind, a swoop for Banega would make sense, with talkSPORT initially noting that Arsenal are prepared to meet his €20m release clause and sign him in January, with Emery of course fully aware of what he can offer given their previous spells working together.

Now, the Daily Star have added that Arsenal are closing in on a move for the Argentine international, and could secure a deal to sign him in January.

Time will tell if such a move materialises, but Banega would surely address a key issue for Arsenal while the opportunity to link up with Emery again could be a telling factor.

In turn, it’s a move that arguably makes sense for all concerned, with the 30-year-old potentially handed the keys to the Arsenal midfield to pull the strings and provide creativity from a deeper role.

Manchester City to make move for £50m-rated Premier League left-back in January

Manchester City have identified this £50m-rated left-back from one of the Premier League’s most exciting sides as the ideal replacement for the injured Benjamin Mendy.

According to a report from Mirror Football, the Premier League champions are eyeing a move for Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell in the January transfer window.

The five-time England international is reportedly worth around £50m, City’s task of prying Chilwell away from Leicester’s hands could be difficult given that the 21-year-old signed a new deal with the Foxes until 2024 only two months ago.

Chilwell came off the bench to make his debut for the Three Lions in September and the Leicester left-back has since gone onto start England’s last four matches. The full-back has been an integral part of Gareth Southgate’s side and the ace is one of the reasons why England are through to the Nations League finals tournament.

Chilwell has been fantastic for club and country this season, as well as becoming a mainstay for the Three Lions, the youngster has started all 16 of Leicester’s Premier League matches this season.

City will no doubt move for a left-back in the January transfer window, Benjamin Mendy is expected to be out until late February at the very least.

The Frenchman missed the majority of City’s title-winning campaign last year and it looks as though the World Cup winner’s second season in Manchester is also set to be spoiled by injury problems.

Double deal: Manchester United close in on £77million BARGAIN duo after breakthrough in talks

Manchester United look to be edging significantly closer to two major January transfer window signings in the form of Nikola Milenkovic and Ruben Dias.

There has been breakthrough news today that suggests the Red Devils could be set to splash out as much as £77million on the two players this winter in a big move to bolster their defence with two quality additions.

MORE: Bid made: Manchester United closer to DREAM signing as Lionel Messi approves £63million deal

Both players are aged just 21 but are among the finest in Europe for their age group, and look ready to go straight into Jose Mourinho’s first XI.

Gianluca Di Marzio report of strong interest in Milenkovic from United, with their efforts to sign the £50m-rated Fiorentina star seemingly stepped up in recent times.

On top of that, Sport Witness report that Dias can leave Benfica for United for a transfer fee of just £27m due to the Portuguese club’s financial difficulties.

Defence has been an area of major weakness for United this season, so to sign two of the top young centre-backs in Europe this winter would be a game-changer for the club in the second half of the season.

With the potential of the pair, £77m may well end up proving a bargain in just a couple of years’ time.

Tiger Woods on the 'other side' of pain and 'loving life now'

NASSAU, Bahamas — Tiger Woods says he is on the "other side" of too many years relying on pain medication to cope with his back surgeries, which led to his arrest on a DUI charge six months ago that he attributed to a bad mix of prescription drugs.

"I'm loving life now," he said Tuesday.

Woods is making yet another return to competition this week at the Hero World Challenge, an 18-man event with no cut at Albany Golf Club. It's his first tournament in 10 months and his first time competing since fusion surgery in April, the fourth operation on his back.

Early indications are that Woods is in a much better spot than when he returned a year ago in the Bahamas. According to those who played with him in recent weeks, his swing looks faster and more fluid, and Woods appears to be happy and healthy.

MORE: Tee times, pairings for the Hero World Challenge | Photos from Albany

Woods reached a low point on Memorial Day when he was arrested in the middle of the night after Florida police found his car parked awkwardly on the side of the road about 15 miles from his home, with Woods asleep behind the wheel, the engine running and a blinker on.

Toxicology reports revealed that Woods had two painkillers (Vicodin and Dilaudid), a sleep drug (Ambien), an anti-anxiety drug (Xanax) and the active ingredient for marijuana in his system. He went through an in-patient treatment program to deal with prescription medication, and last month pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge that allowed him to avoid jail time.

"I've come out the other side and I feel fantastic," Woods said. "A lot of friends have helped me. I didn't realize how bad my back was. Now that I'm feeling the way I'm feeling, it's just hard to imagine that I was living the way I was living with my foot not working, my leg not working and then the hours of not being able to sleep at all because of the pain."

Woods attributed the Memorial Day arrest to "trying to go away from the pain."

"I was trying to sleep, which I hadn't done in a very long time because of the things I've been dealing with," he said. "So as my back improved, I've been able to start sleeping again because I don't have the nerve pain going down my leg. I don't have my leg twitching all over the place. I don't have these issues anymore."

Woods hasn't won since the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational, his 79th title on the PGA Tour that leaves him three short of tying Sam Snead's record. That might have been the last time he had reasonable health.

There were small signs of back pain a week later at the PGA Championship, and what followed were three surgeries and a stop-and-start schedule. Woods had his first back surgery, a microdiscectomy, a week before the 2014 Masters. Since then, there have been four occasions where he returned either from back surgery or from taking time off to let his injuries heal.

The fourth surgery was to fuse two discs in his lower back. That was more about the quality of life than trying to win a golf tournament. The fact that Woods is even playing his holiday exhibition just over seven months after surgery, and six months after that embarrassing arrest, feels like a bonus.

MORE: Photos of Tiger Woods throughout the years

"I missed playing golf for fun," Woods said. "I hadn't done that in two years. I played nine holes here and 18 holes here, and then I have to take three days off because my back was killing me."

Woods returned from a 15-month layoff a year ago at the Hero World Challenge, and while he finished 15th in the 18-man field, he made 24 birdies, raising hopes. He never spoke of being in pain last year, or even at Torrey Pines in January. He then flew to Dubai and withdrew after a 77, citing back spasms.

The difference this time, Woods said, is that he doesn't feel pain, and he thinks now he can take on any shot. He said when he looks back on his performance last year in the Bahamas, it seems as though he were in slow motion.

"I didn't realize how bad my back had become and how much I was flinching and just how slow I was," he said. "I didn't realize it because it's been a slow, degrading process. I thought I had some speed, thought I was playing halfway decent, shot some good scores, but now I've looked back on it and man, I didn't even have much at all."

He's not sure what he has now.

The tournament starts Thursday. It will be the first time since Feb. 3 in Dubai that Woods has to count every shot.

"I'm just looking forward to getting through these four rounds and having an understanding — a better understanding — of where I'm at," he said.

Unai Emery identifies top three Arsenal transfer targets including Brazilian forward and replacement for important defender

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has reportedly got his eyes on three main transfer targets to bolster his squad in a number of key areas.

The Gunners have made a strong start to the season under the Spanish tactician, who replaced the legendary Arsene Wenger in the summer.

However, it still seems clear there are glaring weaknesses in the squad Emery has inherited, so it’s little surprise to see he wants to improve his defence, midfield and attack in the near future.

This is according to a report in the Sun, which states Emery is looking for a left-back to replace Nacho Monreal as he’s expected to leave the Emirates Stadium at the end of his contract.

Emery also remains an admirer of Argentine midfielder Ever Banega from his old club Sevilla, while the Sun also claim he’s after Club Brugge’s in-form Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes.

Doc Redman, the U.S. Amateur champ, set to be the next Clemson golfer to play the Masters

Clemson has sent a lot of amateurs to the Masters Tournament, but few might be as cool as Doc Redman under pressure.

The rising sophomore for the Tigers won the U.S. Amateur on Sunday at hallowed Riviera in the most dramatic of fashion, rallying from two holes down with two to play with a 50-foot eagle on 17 and birdie at 18 before winning with another conceded birdie on the first extra hole.

"It's the greatest match that I've witnessed," said U.S. Walker Cup team captain Spider Miller.

It was a pretty impressive finish for a 19-year-old who only made it into the match play as the No. 62 seed after getting through a 13-man playoff for the last eight spots. Instead of stressing out about his 91st-place standing when he finished his second round of the stroke-play qualifiers at Riviera and Bel-Air, he took off for the beach in Malibu and went to a Dodgers game before finding out his standing had improved to T57 to get in the playoff the next morning.

"I didn't think I was going to make it and I didn't want to stress out about it that afternoon so I decided to unplug from my phone and go have a good time," he said. "I was very happy to kind of be given another shot to move on and a chance to reset from the first two days which were pretty disappointing. I felt very confident at that point that I could get through the playoff and win some matches."

The Raleigh, N.C., native epitomized California cool all week. In his five matches leading up to the 36-hole final, he won three of them on the 18th green. At one stretch of the taut championship match against Doug Ghim, he sank 12 consecutive putts.

"I trusted in myself a lot coming down the stretch that I had the game to pull it out and if it was meant to be it was meant to be," he said. "There's no point, in my eyes, in putting more pressure on yourself than necessary."

That trait and his putting prowess should come in handy next April when shows up for the Masters. Even though Augusta National traditionally invites both the winner and runner-up from the U.S. Amateur, he's not getting ahead of himself until he receives his engraved invitation at the end of the year.

"Words are hard to describe how excited I am," Redman said. "I'm not taking it for granted yet. I'm going to wait 'til the invitation comes and hope that it does. If they invite me, I'll be very honored."

Redman will become the 13th former Clemson golfer to compete in the Masters — the seventh to qualify as an amateur. He joins Chris Patton as the only Tigers to win the U.S. Amateur. Patton's victory in 1989 at Merion was long enough ago that his son, Colby, will join Redman at Clemson this season as a freshman teammate.

Three other Clemson golfers made it to Augusta by reaching the finals of the U.S. Amateur — Parker Moore (1976), Danny Ellis (1993) and Ben Martin (2009). Former Tigers Michael Hoey (2001 British Amateur) and Corbin Mills (2011 U.S. Public Links) qualified for the Masters by winning other amateur events.

Martin, from Greenwood, S.C., is the only one to return to the Masters as a professional. Patton was the only Tiger amateur to make the cut, finishing tied for 39th in 1990 to earn the silver medal for low amateur.

"I'd really just like to go, play my game and hopefully play well," Redman said. "I'd really like to be the low amateur. I'll try and do my best, whether that's missing the cut or finishing top 10, we'll see."

Redman did get to play Augusta National earlier this year with his Clemson golf team, shooting a 69. But he's never been to the Masters or any other professional golf tournament.

But he's familiar enough with the Augusta area. He tied for 10th and fifth in his two appearances in 2015-16 at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and was runner-up last summer in the Palmetto Amateur.

His game hit another gear when he arrived at Clemson last fall. He started every tournament as a true freshman, winning twice and having his score count in all 39 rounds he played. His 70.77 scoring average was the best for a freshman in Clemson history and second only to D.J. Trahan's 70.33 all-time.

"I knew that I was a good player but I never set specific goals of wins or finishes," he said. "I just wanted to get better every day and see where that took me."

Over the summer, his game built toward his U.S. Amateur win. He never missed a cut on the elite amateur circuit and was runner-up in the prestigious Western Amateur that also went extra holes.

"I think I've showed great consistency this summer," he said.

His U.S. Amateur victory not only earned Redman the usual invitations into the Masters and U.S. Open in 2018, it guaranteed him a spot on the 10-man U.S. Walker Cup team — the first Tiger to make the squad since Kyle Stanley in 2007. Redman will return to Los Angeles for the matches against Great Britain &Ireland on Sept. 9-10 and L.A. Country Club.

"I beat some of the best players in the world, and I hope that this can catapult me up into that conversation as well going forward," Redman said.
