Daniel Bryan recently spoke to Newsweek about a wide variety of topics. One of those topics was his current heel run, which has made him the top antagonist on SmackDown Live. The WWE champion talked about his desire to be more hated than Brock Lesnar.
“Some people want to cheer for the bad guy. I don’t want them to cheer, I want to be hated. So far I’ve had two jumpers at live events [laughs]and that’s an old school kind of mentality. You don’t want those guys to jump but you want them to hate you. You want them to pay to see you get beat. Or pay to see you get beat up or at the very least enjoy seeing you get beat up. That’s my thing.”

Bryan also talked about his Survivor Series match with Lesnar and revealed his mindset going into the ring against The Beast Incarnate.
“In the Brock Lesnar match, specifically, before we got to do much, I wanted people to see Lesnar kick my ass. But then I want them to be concerned about Brock Lesnar kicking my ass, and then I kick Brock Lesnar’s ass. And then when I lose, I still want [the fans]to be like “I wanted to see him win but you know what, I hate him. What a despicable human being this guy is” [laughs]”
For many WWE fans, there is simply no comparison between Brock Lesnar and Daniel Bryan. Brock is the absentee Universal champion that supposedly only wants to get paid. Daniel is the full-time WWE champion that fought his heart out to regain his pro wrestling career.
But fans are truly hating Daniel for his new attitude and his self-righteous character. So even though Bryan is highly respected for his work, he is indeed a very convincing, very miserable villain.
Daniel’s next major title defense comes on January 27 when he faces AJ Styles at The Royal Rumble. Brock Lesnar will work that event as well, as he will defend the Universal Championship against Finn Bálor.
