Fulham defender Maxime Le Marchand close to joining Strasbourg

Having sold three first team centre-backs over the summer with only Marseille youngster Lucas Perrin joining as a replacement, Strasbourg’s poor start in Ligue 1 has underlined their weaknesses in their central defensive area.

To solve that issue, the Alsace club, now managed by former Rennes boss Julien Stéphan, are looking to add Fulham defender Maxime Le Marchand to their ranks, according to Le10Sport.

The 31-year-old returned from loan in Belgium to the relegated Premier League club this summer but is expected to sign a two-year deal with Strasbourg in the coming days.

KV Kortrijk to sign Rachid Alioui from Angers

Alioui, who joined Le SCO from Nîmes in 2019, has not played a single minute under new manager Gérard Baticle.

Player Ratings | Reims 0-2 PSG, Kylian Mbappé steals the show on Lionel Messi’s debut

REIMS – 0

Predrag Rajković, 5

Thomas Foket, 5

Yunis Abdelhamid, 6 – One of Ligue 1’s best and most underrated defenders, he posted a physical and astute display and helped keep Di Maria and others quiet for long spells.

Wout Faes, 5

Andrew Gravillon, 5

Marshall Munetsi, 5

Moreto Cassamá, 6 – Got through a lot of midfield work and his improvised flicked effort grazed the post before half time, when he was subbed due to injury.

Dion Lopy, 5

Nathanaël Mbuku, 3 – Unable to impact the game or engineer opportunities to run at PSG’s static defense, wasted possession too often.

Ilan Kebbal, 6 – Faded a little after half time but was the source of nearly all Reims’ positive attacking play. Notably cut in off the right to feed Toure in the first half and his crosses and passing were positive throughout while regularly taking on his man to good effect.

El Bilal Touré, 4 – Wasted Reims’ two biggest chances in slicing a shot wide early on and headed right at Navas in the second half.

Others: Berisha 5, Locko 5, Flips 5, van Bergen 5, Ekitike 5, Berisha 5.

PSG – 2 (Mbappe 16, 63)

Keylor Navas, 4 – A little shaky throughout and he was fortunate his spilling of Touré’s header found an offside on-rusher in Munetsi.

Achraf Hakimi, 6 – Typically dynamic on his flank, although not his most devastating display; a sweeping cross found Mbappe for 2-0.

Marquinhos, 6

Thilo Kehrer, 5

Abdou Diallo, 5

Marco Verratti, 5 – Unable to influence the game consistently from midfield as Reims pressed well throughout, picked up his customary yellow card.

Georginio Wijnaldum, 3 – Still looks off the pace. Hesitant and wasteful in possession at times, he was lucky one wayward pass didn’t result in a goal – Munetsi eventually being ruled offside.

Idrissa Gueye, 6 – The pick of PSG’s midfielders, misplaced a couple passes but also progressed play neatly at times, his clever reverse ball created Mbappe’s second.

Neymar, 5 – Still gathering momentum after a delayed summer break and only occasionally found space to run at Reims’ back line but, happily for Pochettino, looked hungry and focused if not totally fit.

Ángel Di María, 6 – Quiet overall but his arrowed cross for Mbappe’s opener was perhaps the game’s highlight.

Kylian Mbappé, 8 – Two poachers goals won the game. First, a header after an astute run between defenders to finish off Di Maria’s stunning cross then he rounded off a sweeping counter for 2-0.

Others: Draxler 5, Herrera 5, Kimpembe 6, Paredes 5.

Lionel Messi, 6 – Got 25 minutes in the end having been reported as a starter in the build up. Dropped very deep just after his introduction and contributed a number of typically sumptuous touches in tandem with Verratti and Gueye before running at Reims’ defence to good effect on a handful of occasions. He did get some rough treatment, however.

Ronaldo Nazário praises Kylian Mbappé but warns PSG: “I played with the Galacticos and never won the Champions League”

As reported by L‘Équipe, speaking in Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, former Brazil and Real Madrid striker Ronaldo Nazário (44) praised Kylian Mbappé but also offered PSG a warning:

“[Mbappé] has characteristics similar to mine. He has incredible qualities. He has remarkable technique and he knows how to use it at high speed – he escapes defenders, dribbles past keepers… Although he is very young, he has already accomplished a lot. I like Mbappé, I support him.”

“It’s still too early to predict who will win [the Champions League], we will know more from the quarter-finals onwards. PSG are in pole position, but debates are one thing, the pitch is another, and there are many factors. I played at Real Madrid for almost five years in the ‘Galacticos’ team and I never won the Champions League. Winning is not a mathematical equation. This also applies to PSG.”

Kylian Mbappé’s mother denies holding secret meetings with journalists during Euros

Fayza Lamari, the mother of Kylian Mbappé, has reacted to a passage in journalist Baptiste Desprez’s book about France’s Euro 2020 campaign, which claims that she held informal meetings with the press on her son’s place in the national team.

Lamari has refuted this allegation, stating that “if I want to keep a secret, I avoid telling it to media professionals”. She goes on to explain that informal meetings had taken places with journalists, but these had only consisted of initial contacts, “nothing more”.

The passage had indicated that the PSG striker’s parents, notably his mother, would hold discussions in a Budapest café on various subjects. During these meetings, the Mbappés would get across messages about life in the Les Bleus dressing room, and their son’s place in Didier Deschamps set-up, which was reportedly not up to the expectations of his entourage.

Lamari ends her statement suggesting that the author give a portion of his royalties to a foundation of which Mbappé is one of the benefactors.

Player Ratings | Lille 2-0 Marseille, OM sorely miss Dimitri Payet as Lille finally look like the champions

LILLE – 2 (David 28, 95)

Ivo Grbić, 4 – Not much to do overall but was lucky to get away with two errors, one a poor pass out to Guendouzi who fired over and another in flapping at Ünder’s cross for Milik who beat the keeper to the ball and might have scored.

Zeki Çelik, 6

José Fonte, 5

Sven Botman, 6

Reinildo Mandava, 4

Benjamin André, 7 – Classic understated excellence from the Lille midfielder. Routinely swept up in front of his back four, used possession astutely and initiated the attack which led to David’s strike for 1-0.

Amadou Onana, 5

Jonathan Ikoné, 5 – Typically frustrating display. He added some incisive passing around the area at times but should’ve scored twice, firstly when put through in the first half, scuffing his shot, and then when he hit the bar from ten yards out after Weah’s cut back. Also hit the post in the second half.

Jonathan Bamba, 6 – Quietly useful here despite not offering much of a goal threat with some clever use of the ball around the box, unlucky not to get at least one assist.

Jonathan David, 7 – Made the most of Saliba’s missed attempted clearance to stab home the first and his movement around Yilmaz as a support striker was often superb but he did manage to side-foot wide at the neat post when it seemed easier to make it 2-0 before nipping to actually double the lead late on. The Canadian is starting to develop into the player thought they had signed last summer.

Burak Yılmaz, 5 – A bizarre performance. The Turkish international was at the centre of everything Lille produced in an attacking sense and he worked tirelessly but wasted a number of openings both on goal and in wide areas and was repeatedly caught offside.

Others: Gudmundsson 6, Weah 7, Xeka 5, Yazici 5, Sanches 6.

MARSEILLE – 0

Pau López, 5

Leonardo Balerdi, 4

William Saliba, 4 – Badly at fault for David’s goal, missing his attempted clearance before being out-muscled by the Canadian who poked home. He did make up for it to some extent with a superb sliding tackle on Yilmaz as last man and a far more assured second half display.

Duje Ćaleta-Car, 5

Luan Peres, 6 – Solid individually throughout, useful going forward at times and provided a key block on a Gudmundsson shot early in the second half.

Pol Lirola, 5

Mattéo Guendouzi, 4 – Captain for the day, he was unable to really impact the game and was outplayed by André in midfield. He worked hard but his passing was too easily picked off and wasted a major counter attacking chance in the first half, blazing over after Grbić’s poor out ball.

Gerson, 2 – Zero effect on the game and was subbed on the hour. He was fortunate not to see his first half mistake in possession punished with a goal from Yilmaz and woefully wasted a major second half chance having been put through by Rongier.

Valentin Rongier, 6 – Again played as if he had something to prove and used the ball neatly throughout in some advanced midfield areas. Should have had an assist, cleverly playing in Gerson who wasted a major chance.

Cengiz Ünder, 3 – Lacked meaningful impact in an attacking sense and was sent off for a second yellow.

Bamba Dieng, 4 – Worked hard in attack and his movement was again illusive but, with minimal service, struggled to have an impact on the game at large.

Others: Milik 5, Kamara 4, Harit 5, Gueye 5, Henrique 5.

The Europa League final will be played on May 31, while the Conference League sees its final match played on June 7.

As for the domestic calendar, Ligue 1 authorities are set to decide on a revamped 2022-23 season, with players to be released from their clubs one week before the World Cup begins. One scenario being considered would give returning players a two-week break after the tournament, and the alternative being just one week.

New Charlotte Caslick Cup pathway an honour for Women's Sevens Star

The new Charlotte Caslick Cup in sevens honours a rugby performer very much in her prime unlike the trophy named after William Webb Ellis.Normally, you have to be dead or silver-thatched to have any sort of sporting trophy named after you a la the Englishman, whose name was enshrined in the Rugby World Cup more than a hundred years after his passing. It’s a measure of all Caslick has achieved at just 27 that a new sevens competition in Queensland will be played for a trophy struck in her honour. The Charlotte Caslick Cup will be played for across three tournaments by Queensland Premier Sevens women’s club teams and regional sides in October-November.As a series, it formally links the Gold Coast Sevens at Bond University (October 22-23 ), the Bris Vegas Sevens at Wests Rugby Club (November 5-6) and Queensland Sevens State Championships at Noosa Rugby Club (November 12-13).  “It’s pretty cool to have a trophy named after you. It is early in my career so it’s not something I expected. I’m definitely humbled,” Caslick said.“I love sevens and grassroots rugby so I’m happy to support a great initiative from Queensland Rugby that can only help the Aussie Sevens program which has already benefitted from so many Queensland players coming through.”Reg Tayler, the Queensland Academy of Sport Sevens head coach, applauded the new initiative giving extra structure to the Queensland sevens circuit.“The Charlotte Caslick Cup will help us identify players to bring into the QAS system and ultimately build on Queensland’s reputation as a hot bed of talent for the Australian women’s sevens side,” Tayler said.

Caslick, Lily Dick, Dom du Toit, Demi Hayes, Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea and the Levi sisters, Maddi and Teagan, all had support under the QAS banner this year. All were core members of the Aussie sevens outfit which put together a stellar sweep of the HSBS World Rugby Sevens Series crown, the Commonwealth Games gold medal and the Rugby World Cup Sevens title.Caslick is revelling in some down time but knows that things will crank up soon enough when training for next season begins on October 10.Australian sevens coach Tim Walsh will certainly have eyes on invigorating the training squad. Emerging Queensland players like Isabella Nasser and Kahli Henwood may well come into the reckoning for spots.Caslick said there would be no cause for complacency after this year’s achievements because the whole squad knew where motivation would lie.“We had an amazing year but there was no Olympic gold medal. Everything we do will be building towards Paris in 2024,” the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallist said today.“What happened at the Tokyo Olympics last year (when beaten in the quarter-finals) hangs over heads a bit. A lot of our young girls definitely learnt a lot from that because it showed how hard they had to work for this year’s achievements.“There is still so much improvement possible in our team. “Someone like Maddi Levi finds space so naturally. That’s something you can’t teach. She’s only at the start of what she can offer the team.“Madi Ashby is a really well-rounded footballer. She just gets better and better.”Caslick is looking forward to the chance to play a major tournament in front of Australian fans again with the Sydney Sevens scheduled for January 27-29.In the men’s division at the State Championships, Queensland’s top club sides and regional teams from Sunshine Coast, Darling Downs and Townsville will compete for Chucky Stannard Cup.It is named after former Aussie Sevens captain James Stannard.Click Here: plastic injection molding

Flight organiser pleads guilty to one charge in trial over death of Emiliano Sala

RMC Sport report that 66-year-old David Henderson has pleaded guilty to an accusation linked to the flight on which Argentinian striker Emiliano Sala lost his life over the English Channel in 2019, on his way to finalising his move to Cardiff City.

The pilot is suspected of organising the flight in question, and was charged with acting in a reckless and negligent fashion, and has only pleaded guilty to the accusation of trying to organise a flight without valid authorisation, as his trial opened this Monday in Wales. As a result, the next two weeks dedicated to the trial will not concern this second charge.

The small private plane that fell over the Channel was found two weeks after the accident, 67 metres deep, with Sala’s body inside. The pilot, 59-year-old David Ibbotson, was never found. The UK authority on air accidents, the AAIB, concluded that the latter had attempted a manoeuvre at high speed to avoid the bad weather, which result in the fatal accident.

Investigators indicated that the flight had not taken place under the conditions that apply to commercial flights – the pilot did not have the necessary licence to fly the specific type of plane , a Piper PA-46 Malibu, nor to fly at night.

RMC add that the flight was chartered by David Henderson at the request of agent Willie McKay and his son Mark, the intermediary mandated by Nantes to carry out Sala’s transfer. Henderson had previously pleaded not guilty to charges relating to air navigation law in 2020, and was released under bail. Cardiff City indicated that a commercial flight was made available, but declined by Sala. The Argentine nevertheless expressed his worry at the state of the plane he would eventually board, in private messages to family members.
