Manchester City to make move for £50m-rated Premier League left-back in January

Manchester City have identified this £50m-rated left-back from one of the Premier League’s most exciting sides as the ideal replacement for the injured Benjamin Mendy.

According to a report from Mirror Football, the Premier League champions are eyeing a move for Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell in the January transfer window.

The five-time England international is reportedly worth around £50m, City’s task of prying Chilwell away from Leicester’s hands could be difficult given that the 21-year-old signed a new deal with the Foxes until 2024 only two months ago.

Chilwell came off the bench to make his debut for the Three Lions in September and the Leicester left-back has since gone onto start England’s last four matches. The full-back has been an integral part of Gareth Southgate’s side and the ace is one of the reasons why England are through to the Nations League finals tournament.

Chilwell has been fantastic for club and country this season, as well as becoming a mainstay for the Three Lions, the youngster has started all 16 of Leicester’s Premier League matches this season.

City will no doubt move for a left-back in the January transfer window, Benjamin Mendy is expected to be out until late February at the very least.

The Frenchman missed the majority of City’s title-winning campaign last year and it looks as though the World Cup winner’s second season in Manchester is also set to be spoiled by injury problems.

Double deal: Manchester United close in on £77million BARGAIN duo after breakthrough in talks

Manchester United look to be edging significantly closer to two major January transfer window signings in the form of Nikola Milenkovic and Ruben Dias.

There has been breakthrough news today that suggests the Red Devils could be set to splash out as much as £77million on the two players this winter in a big move to bolster their defence with two quality additions.

MORE: Bid made: Manchester United closer to DREAM signing as Lionel Messi approves £63million deal

Both players are aged just 21 but are among the finest in Europe for their age group, and look ready to go straight into Jose Mourinho’s first XI.

Gianluca Di Marzio report of strong interest in Milenkovic from United, with their efforts to sign the £50m-rated Fiorentina star seemingly stepped up in recent times.

On top of that, Sport Witness report that Dias can leave Benfica for United for a transfer fee of just £27m due to the Portuguese club’s financial difficulties.

Defence has been an area of major weakness for United this season, so to sign two of the top young centre-backs in Europe this winter would be a game-changer for the club in the second half of the season.

With the potential of the pair, £77m may well end up proving a bargain in just a couple of years’ time.

Tiger Woods on the 'other side' of pain and 'loving life now'

NASSAU, Bahamas — Tiger Woods says he is on the "other side" of too many years relying on pain medication to cope with his back surgeries, which led to his arrest on a DUI charge six months ago that he attributed to a bad mix of prescription drugs.

"I'm loving life now," he said Tuesday.

Woods is making yet another return to competition this week at the Hero World Challenge, an 18-man event with no cut at Albany Golf Club. It's his first tournament in 10 months and his first time competing since fusion surgery in April, the fourth operation on his back.

Early indications are that Woods is in a much better spot than when he returned a year ago in the Bahamas. According to those who played with him in recent weeks, his swing looks faster and more fluid, and Woods appears to be happy and healthy.

Woods reached a low point on Memorial Day when he was arrested in the middle of the night after Florida police found his car parked awkwardly on the side of the road about 15 miles from his home, with Woods asleep behind the wheel, the engine running and a blinker on.

Toxicology reports revealed that Woods had two painkillers (Vicodin and Dilaudid), a sleep drug (Ambien), an anti-anxiety drug (Xanax) and the active ingredient for marijuana in his system. He went through an in-patient treatment program to deal with prescription medication, and last month pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge that allowed him to avoid jail time.

"I've come out the other side and I feel fantastic," Woods said. "A lot of friends have helped me. I didn't realize how bad my back was. Now that I'm feeling the way I'm feeling, it's just hard to imagine that I was living the way I was living with my foot not working, my leg not working and then the hours of not being able to sleep at all because of the pain."

Woods attributed the Memorial Day arrest to "trying to go away from the pain."

"I was trying to sleep, which I hadn't done in a very long time because of the things I've been dealing with," he said. "So as my back improved, I've been able to start sleeping again because I don't have the nerve pain going down my leg. I don't have my leg twitching all over the place. I don't have these issues anymore."

Woods hasn't won since the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational, his 79th title on the PGA Tour that leaves him three short of tying Sam Snead's record. That might have been the last time he had reasonable health.

There were small signs of back pain a week later at the PGA Championship, and what followed were three surgeries and a stop-and-start schedule. Woods had his first back surgery, a microdiscectomy, a week before the 2014 Masters. Since then, there have been four occasions where he returned either from back surgery or from taking time off to let his injuries heal.

The fourth surgery was to fuse two discs in his lower back. That was more about the quality of life than trying to win a golf tournament. The fact that Woods is even playing his holiday exhibition just over seven months after surgery, and six months after that embarrassing arrest, feels like a bonus.

"I missed playing golf for fun," Woods said. "I hadn't done that in two years. I played nine holes here and 18 holes here, and then I have to take three days off because my back was killing me."

Woods returned from a 15-month layoff a year ago at the Hero World Challenge, and while he finished 15th in the 18-man field, he made 24 birdies, raising hopes. He never spoke of being in pain last year, or even at Torrey Pines in January. He then flew to Dubai and withdrew after a 77, citing back spasms.

The difference this time, Woods said, is that he doesn't feel pain, and he thinks now he can take on any shot. He said when he looks back on his performance last year in the Bahamas, it seems as though he were in slow motion.

"I didn't realize how bad my back had become and how much I was flinching and just how slow I was," he said. "I didn't realize it because it's been a slow, degrading process. I thought I had some speed, thought I was playing halfway decent, shot some good scores, but now I've looked back on it and man, I didn't even have much at all."

He's not sure what he has now.

The tournament starts Thursday. It will be the first time since Feb. 3 in Dubai that Woods has to count every shot.

"I'm just looking forward to getting through these four rounds and having an understanding — a better understanding — of where I'm at," he said.

Unai Emery identifies top three Arsenal transfer targets including Brazilian forward and replacement for important defender

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has reportedly got his eyes on three main transfer targets to bolster his squad in a number of key areas.

The Gunners have made a strong start to the season under the Spanish tactician, who replaced the legendary Arsene Wenger in the summer.

However, it still seems clear there are glaring weaknesses in the squad Emery has inherited, so it’s little surprise to see he wants to improve his defence, midfield and attack in the near future.

This is according to a report in the Sun, which states Emery is looking for a left-back to replace Nacho Monreal as he’s expected to leave the Emirates Stadium at the end of his contract.

Emery also remains an admirer of Argentine midfielder Ever Banega from his old club Sevilla, while the Sun also claim he’s after Club Brugge’s in-form Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes.

Doc Redman, the U.S. Amateur champ, set to be the next Clemson golfer to play the Masters

Clemson has sent a lot of amateurs to the Masters Tournament, but few might be as cool as Doc Redman under pressure.

The rising sophomore for the Tigers won the U.S. Amateur on Sunday at hallowed Riviera in the most dramatic of fashion, rallying from two holes down with two to play with a 50-foot eagle on 17 and birdie at 18 before winning with another conceded birdie on the first extra hole.

"It's the greatest match that I've witnessed," said U.S. Walker Cup team captain Spider Miller.

It was a pretty impressive finish for a 19-year-old who only made it into the match play as the No. 62 seed after getting through a 13-man playoff for the last eight spots. Instead of stressing out about his 91st-place standing when he finished his second round of the stroke-play qualifiers at Riviera and Bel-Air, he took off for the beach in Malibu and went to a Dodgers game before finding out his standing had improved to T57 to get in the playoff the next morning.

"I didn't think I was going to make it and I didn't want to stress out about it that afternoon so I decided to unplug from my phone and go have a good time," he said. "I was very happy to kind of be given another shot to move on and a chance to reset from the first two days which were pretty disappointing. I felt very confident at that point that I could get through the playoff and win some matches."

The Raleigh, N.C., native epitomized California cool all week. In his five matches leading up to the 36-hole final, he won three of them on the 18th green. At one stretch of the taut championship match against Doug Ghim, he sank 12 consecutive putts.

"I trusted in myself a lot coming down the stretch that I had the game to pull it out and if it was meant to be it was meant to be," he said. "There's no point, in my eyes, in putting more pressure on yourself than necessary."

That trait and his putting prowess should come in handy next April when shows up for the Masters. Even though Augusta National traditionally invites both the winner and runner-up from the U.S. Amateur, he's not getting ahead of himself until he receives his engraved invitation at the end of the year.

"Words are hard to describe how excited I am," Redman said. "I'm not taking it for granted yet. I'm going to wait 'til the invitation comes and hope that it does. If they invite me, I'll be very honored."

Redman will become the 13th former Clemson golfer to compete in the Masters — the seventh to qualify as an amateur. He joins Chris Patton as the only Tigers to win the U.S. Amateur. Patton's victory in 1989 at Merion was long enough ago that his son, Colby, will join Redman at Clemson this season as a freshman teammate.

Three other Clemson golfers made it to Augusta by reaching the finals of the U.S. Amateur — Parker Moore (1976), Danny Ellis (1993) and Ben Martin (2009). Former Tigers Michael Hoey (2001 British Amateur) and Corbin Mills (2011 U.S. Public Links) qualified for the Masters by winning other amateur events.

Martin, from Greenwood, S.C., is the only one to return to the Masters as a professional. Patton was the only Tiger amateur to make the cut, finishing tied for 39th in 1990 to earn the silver medal for low amateur.

"I'd really just like to go, play my game and hopefully play well," Redman said. "I'd really like to be the low amateur. I'll try and do my best, whether that's missing the cut or finishing top 10, we'll see."

Redman did get to play Augusta National earlier this year with his Clemson golf team, shooting a 69. But he's never been to the Masters or any other professional golf tournament.

But he's familiar enough with the Augusta area. He tied for 10th and fifth in his two appearances in 2015-16 at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and was runner-up last summer in the Palmetto Amateur.

His game hit another gear when he arrived at Clemson last fall. He started every tournament as a true freshman, winning twice and having his score count in all 39 rounds he played. His 70.77 scoring average was the best for a freshman in Clemson history and second only to D.J. Trahan's 70.33 all-time.

"I knew that I was a good player but I never set specific goals of wins or finishes," he said. "I just wanted to get better every day and see where that took me."

Over the summer, his game built toward his U.S. Amateur win. He never missed a cut on the elite amateur circuit and was runner-up in the prestigious Western Amateur that also went extra holes.

"I think I've showed great consistency this summer," he said.

His U.S. Amateur victory not only earned Redman the usual invitations into the Masters and U.S. Open in 2018, it guaranteed him a spot on the 10-man U.S. Walker Cup team — the first Tiger to make the squad since Kyle Stanley in 2007. Redman will return to Los Angeles for the matches against Great Britain &Ireland on Sept. 9-10 and L.A. Country Club.

"I beat some of the best players in the world, and I hope that this can catapult me up into that conversation as well going forward," Redman said.

Talks held: €20m-rated starlet eyed by Man Utd as solution to Mourinho’s defensive woes

Man Utd have reportedly already entered discussions with Galatasaray over the potential signing of defender Ozan Kabak.

The Red Devils have been porous at the back so far this season, conceding 26 goals in just 16 Premier League games to leave them with the joint-worst defensive record of the top 13 sides.

That in turn has also been a huge factor in why they remain in sixth place in the standings, and so evidently it’s an area of the squad that Jose Mourinho will be desperate to strengthen.

As noted by the Independent, the Portuguese tactician was said to be left bitterly frustrated that he didn’t get a new signing in the summer to bolster his backline, but a new arrival could be on the way.

According to Aksam, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, Man Utd have reportedly opened talks with Galatasaray over Kabak, although the 18-year-old is said to be valued at €20m.

Considering their current issues and the need for an immediate fix, splashing out €20m on a prospect doesn’t particularly sound like the most sensible transfer strategy from the Red Devils, as opposed to spending a little more on a more experienced and proven individual.

With that in mind, it remains to be seen if reported talks advance and an agreement is reached between the two clubs, but Mourinho will surely be hugely eager to get this signing right in order to shore things up defensively and not have to revisit that department again.

Time will tell if Kabak gets the opportunity of a lifetime to play for the Manchester giants, but with just a handful of appearances at senior level for the Turkish outfit and having been capped up to U18 level by Turkey, it doesn’t seem as though he’ll be the solution on paper.

Manchester United eye £160million trio as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s January transfer budget revealed

Manchester United have three main defensive targets for the January transfer window, according to latest reports.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has just replaced Jose Mourinho as manager at Old Trafford, taking charge of the club until the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Norwegian tactician will not have a huge amount to spend this winter – just £50million – with a new central defender seemingly an understandable priority.

The report lists £30m-rated Toby Alderweireld and Porto youngster Eder Militao, worth roughly £40m, as two realistic targets who could be affordable.

There is also interest in Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, according to the Mirror, though his asking price of £90m makes a January deal unlikely unless something big changes.

Jerry Kelly looking to make wire-to-wire history at Boeing Classic

Jerry Kelly not only has to contend with history on Sunday as he tries to win the Boeing Classic in wire-to-wire fashion, he also has to deal with a couple of World Golf Hall of Famers among the group of contenders waiting to pounce if he has any letdown.

Kelly, the Wisconsin native and big Green Bay Packers fan, shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday at the Club at Snoqualmie Ridge, and leads by three shots over Billy Mayfair and Jerry Smith.

If Kelly wins, it will be his first victory on the 50-and-older tour in his rookie season, and he would become the first player to win the Boeing Classic after leading after the first round.

"I'll be thrilled if there is another first tomorrow," said Kelly, who lives in Madison, the city where he was born.

MORE: 13 toughest holes on Tour this season

But don't worry about Kelly, who is at 13 under, being overconfident. Not with the two Hall of Famers, defending champion Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie, just four shots back.

Langer, who will be celebrating his 60th birthday on Sunday, was four shots behind heading into last year's final round before rallying to win the event for the second time.

"I would rather be five ahead than (four) behind, but you take whatever happens and go from there," said Langer, who finished more than an hour before Kelly.

Perhaps Kelly's most important shot Saturday was his final one. He made a tricky, downhill 15-foot par putt, avoiding dropping a shot after hitting his drive into the fairway bunker.

"It was big," Kelly said of the par save. "The more you show signs of going backwards, the more they're going to smell blood in the water."

Langer, who could become the first three-time winner of the event, has been the dominant player on the PGA Tour Champions for a decade. He was his typical self on his final day in the 50s, shooting a 65. But he lamented that his round wasn't a bit better, as he was unable to birdie the relatively easy par-5 18th.

Langer was paired with Montgomerie, who also shot a 65.

"I enjoy playing with Bernhard," he said. "You know if you're equal with him, you have half a chance and I did that with a good putt on the last (hole)."

Mayfair tied for 21st in this event last year after just turning 50. He said the experience of playing last year has been a big help.

"I have my own yardage book, and I have my own notes from last year," he said. "I told some of the guys I'm not a rookie. They said, 'We'll tell you when you're not a rookie anymore.' "

Four players are five shots back at 8 under, including 2014 champion Scott Dunlap.

There are nine players at 7 under.

Seattle native Fred Couplesshot a 66 and is tied for 19th place at 6 under.

For him and the rest of the chase pack, their chances hinge on what Kelly does Sunday. The last time he led entering the final round of a tournament was in 2002 in the Sony Open on the PGA Tour. He went on to win that event for one of his three victories on that Tour.

Kelly's plan for Sunday is to "keep hitting fairways, keep hitting greens, make every putt you can possibly get and go to the next hole." And he'll probably be wearing a smile.

"Just go play and try and have some fun," Kelly said.

Barcelona tipped to win race to land classy January signing ahead of Euro rivals

Barcelona remain on course to compete for major honours this season, and reports claim they could be bringing in January reinforcements to help too.

The Catalan giants sit top of La Liga with a three-point lead over their nearest rivals, while they advanced as group winners into the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Coach Ernesto Valverde seemingly has struck the right balance in his squad for the most part, but as noted by Calciomercato, via reports in England, it’s claimed that Barcelona are edging closer to securing a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot in January.

The 23-year-old will see his current contract expire at the end of the season, and so with time running out to agree on a renewal, the French giants are running the risk of losing him for nothing in the summer.

In turn, agreeing to a cut-price January deal seems to make sense from their perspective, but time will tell if a move materialises in the New Year, or if an agreement is put in place for the Frenchman to join on a free at the end of the season.

It’s added in the report that both Manchester City and Juventus are also keen on Rabiot, and so it remains to be seen if they launch a last-minute bid to convince him otherwise, but it’s suggested that he’s edging ever closer to moving to the Nou Camp.

Given the technical quality and creative class that he has on the ball, it can be argued that Rabiot is an ideal fit for the Barcelona midfield, providing a long-term option for the reigning Spanish champions alongside the likes of club stalwarts Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic.

Nevertheless, Mundo Deportivo claim that €75m-rated Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong is also a transfer target, and so it remains to be seen how a possible Rabiot arrival would affect that touted move.

Chelsea consider surprise January transfer move for experienced Premier League star

Chelsea are reportedly considering a surprise transfer swoop for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy to solve their problems up front this January.

The Foxes forward has been one of the Premier League’s best attacking players in recent years, but the chance of a move to a bigger club perhaps seemed to fall away when he rejected Arsenal in 2016, as noted by the Guardian.

Still, another opportunity could now be on for Vardy, with Chelsea in need of a striker after poor form from Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud this season and last.

Centre-forward seems the one major weakness in Maurizio Sarri’s squad, which would surely be closer to challenging for the Premier League title with a more prolific finisher.

According to the Telegraph, the Blues are looking at big names like Gonzalo Higuain and Nabil Fekir, but Vardy is also an option for them.
