The best shot hit with each club in the bag in 2017 on the PGA Tour

Some of the defining shots on the PGA Tour this year were hit from the tee and fairway, from the bunkers and behind trees, and even from the driving range.

Two of them effectively clinched a first major. One of them introduced another young star.

One way to look back on 2017 is through every club in the bag. The shots weren't necessarily the best, but they helped shape the year.

DRIVER

Moments after Dustin Johnson made a birdie putt to force a sudden-death playoff at the Northern Trust, he effectively ended it with one swing . CBS analyst Nick Faldo pointed to a bunker beyond the right side of the lake on the 18th hole at Glen Oaks as a target for Johnson's powerful fade. Instead, he took it over the entire lake, a 341-yard blast. That left him a lob wedge to 4 feet for birdie to beat Jordan Spieth.

3-WOOD

"Oh gosh, Jimmy, be good." Justin Thomas was speaking to caddie Jimmy Johnson after launching a 3-wood from 310 yards to the elevated green on the par-5 18th at Erin Hills. It was perfect, landing softly and rolling out 8 feet to set up an eagle that tied one U.S. Open record (63) and broke another (9-under par).

HYBRID

Robert Streb was in the rough left of the fairway on the par-5 12th hole at the TPC Old White in the Greenbrier Classic. It looked as though he might lay up, but Streb chose hybrid and slashed it out. The ball tumbled onto the green and came within inches of an albatross.

3-IRON

Jordan Spieth hit the most memorable 3-iron of the year, not for the way he struck the ball, but from where he struck it in the Open Championship. On the wrong side of a dune, facing an impossible lie, Spieth wisely asked if the practice range at Royal Birkdale was out-of-bounds. Told it was in play, he took a penalty drop on the range, got free relief from the equipment trucks and hit a blind shot with his 3-iron just short of the green. He got up-and-down for bogey. He played his next four holes in 5 under to win the claret jug.

4-IRON

Patrick Cantlay already made a remarkable recovery from a back injury that plagued him for three years by making it to the Tour Championship in just 11 starts. And then he finished his year in a playoff in Las Vegas. In the rough blocked by trees, Cantlay saw enough of an opening to hit 4-iron that somehow made it through, ran through the green and set up an efficient up-and-down to win the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open for his first PGA Tour victory.

5-IRON

Dustin Johnson was on the verge of losing the last of a six-shot lead in the HSBC Champions when Justin Rose, in the group ahead of him, faced the tough par-3 17th at Sheshan International with a back pin. Rose hit 5-iron just left of the flag and watched it roll to 4 feet for a birdie that led to a two-shot victory, his first of the year.

6-IRON

The two memorable shots from Jordan Spieth's victory in the Open Championship were the shot from the driving range and the 50-foot eagle putt. The most important shot was the 6-iron he nearly holed on the par-3 14th. Trailing for the first time in the final round after his adventurous bogey on the previous hole at Royal Birkdale, Spieth's tee shot plopped down in front of the hole and stopped 4 feet away. The birdie tied the lead, and Spieth was on his way.

7-IRON

Justin Thomas took control in the final round of the PGA Championship with a par putt on the 16th. He sealed it with a 7-iron as good as any shot he ever hit. The pin was in the front on the par-3 17th at Quail Hollow, and Thomas had 221 yards over the water to the hole. It was so good that he let the club twirl through his hands as he watched it land on the front of the green to 15 feet. He made birdie for a three-shot lead and a most enjoyable walk to the final hole.

8-IRON

Sergio Garcia's comeback at the Masters began with a par. He caught up to Justin Rose in the final round with two of the best swings he ever made under the pressure of a major. The first was a drive so powerful that it left him only 171 yards into the par-5 15th. His 8-iron landed inches in front of the hole and nicked the pin before it rolled 14 feet away. He made the eagle, and eventually got the green jacket.

9-IRON

Brooks Koepka put the finishing touches on a brilliant closing stretch to win the U.S. Open on the par-3 16th at Erin Hills. His 9-iron was just right, landing beyond the hole and catching the slope to leave him 10 feet away for a third straight birdie to keep his three-shot lead.

PITCHING WEDGE

Xander Schauffele's name first surfaced at the U.S. Open when he tied for fifth. Three weeks later, he was part of a logjam down the stretch at the Greenbrier Classic when he reached the par-3 18th hole. He hit pitching wedge to 3 feet for birdie and a one-shot victory.

54-DEGREE WEDGE

Dustin Johnson faced charges by Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood in the Mexico Championship and found himself in trouble on the 18th hole at Chapultepec Golf Club. He was in a fairway bunker, his feet on the edge of the grass. He went with a 54-degree wedge that he hit to 20 feet to set up a two-putt par and a one-shot victory in his debut at No. 1 in the world.

LOB WEDGE

In a playoff against Daniel Berger at the Travelers Championship, Jordan Spieth came up short and in a bunker on the 18th hole at TPC River Highlands. He blasted out and watched it roll in for birdie, setting off a wild celebration. Spieth threw the wedge. Caddie Michael Greller threw the rake. Spieth raced out of the bunker and leapt into his caddie for a body bump usually seen only in football.

PUTTER

Jon Rahm showed a sense of the moment in his first full year as a pro. He was just off the back of the 18th green at Torrey Pines when he sent his 60-foot putt down the slope and watched it turned hard to the left and into the cup for eagle. He wound up winning the Farmers Insurance Open by three shots. He ended the year at No. 4 in the world.

Liverpool identify surprise Premier League January transfer target

Liverpool are interested in signing Pascal Gross from Brighton when the transfer window reopens, as Jurgen Klopp looks to increase his squad depth.

The Reds are top of the Premier League after 16 matches of the 2018-19 campaign and remain unbeaten, a point ahead of defending champions Manchester City.

Klopp’s men have emerged as the biggest threat to City’s crown over the last few months and currently boast the league’s best defensive record, having shipped just six goals to date.

Summer signings Alisson, Xherdan Shaqiri, Naby Keita and Fabinho have all settled in nicely and there seems to be a real balance to Liverpool’s squad this year, as they chase a first league title since 1990.

According to Team Talk, despite their early-season success, Klopp is hopeful of bringing in midfield reinforcements during the January transfer window and Brighton’s Pascal Gross has thusly emerged as a primary target for the club.

This surprise news comes just two days after Liverpool secured a 4-0 win at Bournemouth which underlined their title credentials and showcased Klopp’s considerable options across the middle of the park.

Jordan Henderson, Keita, Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum are all fighting it out for a regular spot in the starting XI at the moment and the arrival of Gross would only increase competition for places.

The German midfielder won the Seagull’s Player of the Season award last term, having impressed since his move from Ingolstadt in the summer of 2017.

Pascal Gross

Gross remains a key part of Chris Hughton’s squad at Brighton but he would surely be tempted by a high profile switch to Anfield should an offer be forthcoming in the new year.

The 27-year-old is valued at £15 million and could help Klopp reinforce his squad ahead of a crucial second half of the season, where injuries and fatigue are more likely to come into play.

Gross has experience of playing in the Premier League and he could thrive if given the chance to step up a level,  but we will have to wait and see until next year if this mooted deal comes to fruition.

Chelsea star offers himself to Barcelona which could solve key long-term issue

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has reportedly offered his services to Barcelona as his struggles at Stamford Bridge continue.

The 26-year-old arrived from Real Madrid last year, but he’s managed 22 goals in 68 appearances as he has gone through long stretches without goals while losing his place in the starting line-up under Maurizio Sarri too.

Whether it’s Olivier Giroud or Eden Hazard in a false nine role, it appears as though the Italian tactician has other options available to him, and that in turn has contributed to Morata’s ongoing troubles in entirely establishing himself at Chelsea.

With that in mind, it’s reported by Mundo Deportivo that the Spaniard has offered himself to Barcelona as it would seem as though he’s eager to return home and start a new challenge to rediscover his best form.

Given his history with Real Madrid, it’s a move that wouldn’t likely go down well at the Bernabeu, and so it remains to be seen if an agreement is reached to see the move materialise.

Importantly, it’s added that Barcelona are seeking a long-term replacement for Luis Suarez who turns 32 in January, and so from that perspective, Morata could solve an upcoming issue.

Nevertheless, given his ongoing struggles to becoming a prolific and reliable goalscorer, coupled with the fact that Mundo Deportivo also add that signing an attacker isn’t seen as a priority for Barcelona currently, it seems doubtful that Morata will be joining the Catalan giants any time soon.

However, time will tell if the situation changes and if Suarez’s form becomes a more prominent issue. Given he’s bagged 10 goals and six assists in 19 appearances so far this season, it doesn’t appear as though splashing out big money on another striker is necessarily the most sensible priority for Barcelona.

Instead, perhaps the smart move would be to sign a capable alternative to rotate and push Suarez until his form becomes a more serious concern.

Danny Balin wins event No. 1 of PGA Tournament Series presented By Golf Advisor

PORT ST. LUCIE (Nov. 30, 2017) — Danny Balin had what every golfer wants: A putt on the last hole to win a tournament.

“That’s what we all dream of,” Balin said.

Balin delivered, making the clutch 5-foot par on the 18th hole – after making a 5-foot birdie putt on No. 17 to take the lead – to win Event No. 1 of the PGA Tournament Series at PGA Golf Club.

Balin shot an even-par 72 in windy conditions on the Dye Course to finish at 4-under 140 and edge Reigning PGA Professional Player of the Year Rich Berberian (70-141) and Rod Perry (68-141), who was the leading money winner in last year’s series.

“It feels good to get up for the moment,” said Balin, who became eligible to play in PGA of America events in June after playing the last four years on PGA Tour Latinoamerica. “I’ve had my share of putts to win and missed a ton of them. Luckily, I made this one.”

Ten minutes earlier, Berberian faced a 15-putt on the 18th green that would have moved him to 4-under and into a share of the lead. The ball caught the right edge of the hole and, cruelly, spun out to the left.

“It was a good putt, maybe it was a little firm because I had been leaving a lot of putts short this week,” Berberian said. “I knew I had to give it a chance. It lipped out pretty hard and that was it.”

Perry, who started tied for 18th place, shot the day’s best round. He was finished more than an hour before the final group.

“I didn’t think I had chance, but I’m pleasantly surprised to finish T2,” Perry said. “Danny’s one of the guys on the radar. He’s obviously played a lot of golf at a higher level than this the last couple of years. He’s going to be one of the guys to beat.”

Balin, a PGA Assistant Professional at Westchester Country Club in New York, earned $5,000 for the victory.

Scott Berliner (72-143) and Nick Latimer-Zabor (71-143) finished tied for fourth.

The PGA Tournament Series is presented by Golf Advisor.

Liverpool and Arsenal given huge transfer boost as PSG sporting director issues statement

Liverpool and Arsenal will want to take note of this statement from Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Antero Henrique on the Adrien Rabiot transfer situation.

The PSG chief has more or less confirmed Rabiot will be on his way out of the Parc des Princes as he says the player has told him he doesn’t want to sign a new contract and is planning to leave when he becomes a free agent this summer.

Henrique is quoted by Get French Football News as saying “The player (Rabiot) has informed me he is not signing a new deal and wants to leave for free at the end of the season.”

This is a big blow for PSG, for whom Rabiot has been a key player for a number of years now, while he also arguably still has his best years ahead of him.

Many big clubs have been linked with the France international, with the Mirror recently translating a L’Equipe report that Liverpool and Barcelona have been in touch about snapping him up, while the Sun have linked him with both Arsenal and Tottenham.

Rabiot could clearly fit in well at either Arsenal or Liverpool in particular, with both sides arguably in need of strengthening with a midfielder of that type.

Bad news for Barcelona: Touted £200m transfer target makes big decision on future

Amid ongoing speculation linking Neymar with a return to Barcelona, reports in France have claimed that he wants to stay with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 26-year-old moved to the French capital last year and has gone on to score 44 goals in just 49 games while winning a whole host of domestic honours.

Injuries have limited his influence though, while as noted by Calciomercato, transfer rumours have never been far away when it comes to a possible return to Barcelona after such a successful stint at the Nou Camp.

His move to France arguably hasn’t delivered the results desired on an individual level, as Neymar wasn’t in contention for the Ballon d’Or this year, while PSG continued to falter in the Champions League last season despite Neymar leading their early charge.

In turn, it’s understandable if a possible return to Barcelona is desired, with The Express reporting that Barca had reportedly been prepared to splash out up to £200m on securing a reunion with their former Brazilian superstar.

However, the report adds, via Le 10 Sport, that Neymar has scuppered any hopes of that materialising in the near future at least, as he has decided that he wishes to stay with the Ligue 1 champions.

It remains to be seen how accurate that is ahead of the summer, but with the opportunity to continue to be a leading figure for PSG alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Gianluigi Buffon, it could be enough to persuade him to stay for the long-term project.

The French giants made it through to the knockout stage of the Champions League in midweek, and so perhaps much will depend on whether or not they can finally prove capable of mounting a serious bid to win the competition this season.

For now though, it appears as though if Barcelona had any hopes of prising Neymar back, he’s not interested in such a move for now.

Manchester United star makes transfer u-turn after recent development

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has reportedly decided to snub a potential transfer to Real Madrid.

The England international had been linked with a surprise possible move to the Spanish giants after a difficult start to the season under Jose Mourinho.

However, Rashford is one of a few players to improve immensely since Mourinho’s departure, with the whole club looking revitalised under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And according to the Sun, Rashford is now set to reject any approaches from Real to leave Old Trafford as he wants to stay at the club after their recent improvement.

The 21-year-old is one of the biggest young talents in Europe and fans will be delighted to see United hold on to a homegrown talent.

Chelsea given choice of two replacements as Eden Hazard Real Madrid transfer agreed

Chelsea reportedly look set to lose Eden Hazard in a transfer to Real Madrid and have two potential replacements they could bring in – Marco Asensio or Christian Pulisic.

According to Don Balon, Hazard has agreed on a move to Madrid, though Chelsea still need to sign it off either this January or in the summer transfer window.

CFC will no doubt be eager to land a big name to replace the Belgium international, who is one of the best players in the world and who has been hugely important to the club for a number of years now.

Don Balon claim Chelsea could land Asensio from Real Madrid as part of a deal if Hazard is allowed to leave this January.

On the other hand, the Blues could also target Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund to give him some time to bed in ahead of letting Hazard go in the summer.

Marc Leishman, Adam Bland lead Australian PGA; Sergio Garcia six behind

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) — Marc Leishman took advantage of an early start to shoot a 7-under 65 and move into a share of the second-round lead at the Australian PGA Championship on Friday.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia was six strokes behind after a 71 while Adam Scott missed the cut by two shots after bogeying four of six holes on the back nine at Royal Pines and shooting 74.

Leishman started on the 10th hole and had four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys on his first nine before birdieing three of his first five holes after the turn.

He's on 12-under 132 and tied with Adam Bland, who shot 66 on a morning of good scoring conditions — soft greens and little wind.

Greg Chalmers (66) was two strokes behind in third.

"When you're on a run like that and playing well, you sort of can afford to be aggressive," Leishman said. "If you make a few mistakes, you feel like you can make some birdies."

Defending champion Harold Varner III of the United States, who teed off with Leishman, shot 66 and was five strokes behind.

Varner said he got swept along with Leishman's strong play.

"I'm going to need some help, though, because if he (Leishman) keeps playing like that, we're in trouble," Varner said. "Everyone in this field is in trouble."

Garcia had an up-and-down day with two birdies and a double bogey on the front nine before three birdies and two bogeys on the back.

"It wasn't my best day out there," Garcia said. "I hit a couple of really nice putts, but probably a little bit tired, physically and mentally. Because of that my golf game wasn't as sharp as I would like it to be. But I guess the good thing is we still fought hard, we stayed in it …"

Mike Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, shot 69 and was 10 strokes behind.

Scott's return to a long-handled putter wasn't successful. He used a broomstick putter when he won the Masters in 2013, but switched to a short putter after a ban on anchoring the putter against the body began in 2016.

A winner of the Australian PGA in 2013 and runner-up in a playoff the following year at Royal Pines, Scott started the day at 1 under but missed at least four close putts on the back nine.

It ended a disappointing season for the father of two, who has slumped to a seven-year rankings low of 30th in the world. He last missed the cut at the Australian PGA in 2010, a year in which he fell as low as 48.

"I found it difficult switching on and switching off the last few months," Scott said. "It's been hard not to get frustrated by just playing a bit average.

"I spent most of the time (Friday) in the trees … I've got to lift my ball striking up. I lose too many shots and that's the strength of my game."

Unai Emery closing in on key Arsenal transfer target valued at €20m

Arsenal are reportedly making progress in their bid to sign Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega in a move that could cost them €20m.

The Gunners remain in the hunt for a top four finish in the Premier League in Unai Emery’s first season in charge, as they sit just two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea after 19 games.

SEE MORE: Talks held: Arsenal could receive January bid of up to €20m for star ahead of expected exit

In turn, January reinforcements could be crucial to help them achieve their objective, and coupled with the fact that Aaron Ramsey’s current contract will expire at the end of the season with no renewal in sight it seems, they will have to fill a void in their midfield regardless.

Although Emery moved to bring in the likes of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi this past summer, there is arguably still a lack of creative quality in that department, with many of his midfield options offering a physical presence and defensive solidity.

With that in mind, a swoop for Banega would make sense, with talkSPORT initially noting that Arsenal are prepared to meet his €20m release clause and sign him in January, with Emery of course fully aware of what he can offer given their previous spells working together.

Now, the Daily Star have added that Arsenal are closing in on a move for the Argentine international, and could secure a deal to sign him in January.

Time will tell if such a move materialises, but Banega would surely address a key issue for Arsenal while the opportunity to link up with Emery again could be a telling factor.

In turn, it’s a move that arguably makes sense for all concerned, with the 30-year-old potentially handed the keys to the Arsenal midfield to pull the strings and provide creativity from a deeper role.
