A Wisconsin Air National Guard unit is flying again after a deadly F-16 fighter jet crash in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula earlier this month. 

The 115th Fighter Wing, based at Truax Field Air National Guard Base in Madison, resumed flights on Dec. 15 after grounding pilots following the Dec. 8 crash that killed Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones, 37, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.

The accident, which was the third F-16 crash this year, set off an investigation that is ongoing.

The fighter jet crashed during a routine training mission in Hiawatha National Forest in Delta County, Mich. 

The previous two incidents this year include a June crash that killed 1st Lt. David Schmitz, 32, at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., and a July crash at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., that injured the pilot when he ejected.

The Pentagon has struggled to quell similar incidents over the past 10 years, with more than 6,000 military aviation accidents leading to 224 pilot or aircrew deaths since 2013, according to a congressionally commissioned report released earlier this month.
