Vikings have a solid showcase at Holiday Inn Open

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Augustana wrestling team competed at the Holiday Inn Open on Saturday hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The Vikings had 10 wrestlers that finished in the top five for the day.

Jayd Docken (197 pounds, unattached), Michael Lowman (285 pounds, unattached), Mason Brownlee (141 pounds, unattached), and Clay Broze (285 pounds, unattached) all tabbed second-place.

Shawn Hatlestad (157 pounds, unattached) and Lane Blasius (157 pounds, unattached) took third-place, while Aero Amo (184 pounds, unattached) and Clayton Wahlstrom (184 pounds, unattached) finished fourth place.

Javier Vieyra (125 pounds, unattached) and Tim Weber (165 pounds, unattached) finished fifth to round out the top 10 performances.

Docken, competing unattached, won in a 5-3 decision over Parker Hines of Air Force, followed by a 4-0 decision over Devan Fors of Chadron State. Docken headed into the semifinals where he wrestled against Sam Mangum of Western State Colorado where he won in a 3-2 decision to head into the Championship bout. Docken finished in second-place after a medical forfeit to Spencer Johnson of Nebraska.

Lowman, competing unattached, started his day off with three straight byes before taking on Niko Bogojevis of Colorado State Pueblo winning in a 1-0 decision to head into the semifinals. Lowman wrestled against Pedro Garcia of Hastings winning in a 5-3 decision to head into the Championship bout against Jack Page of Fort Hays State. Page pinned Lowman at the 1:06 mark taking first-place and giving Lowman a second-place finish.

Brownlee, competing unattached, started his day off winning in a sudden victory of 3-1 over Isaiah Sedillos of South Dakota State. Brownlee went on winning in a major decision 15-4 over Nathan Toft of Fort Hays State, followed by matching up with Colton Orrino of Northern Colorado winning in a 7-3 decision to advance to the semifinals. Brownlee wrestled against Brock Thumm of Chadron State winning in a 6-1 decision, before dropping to a 10-7 decision to Zadac Lankford of Central Missouri in the Championship bout.

Broze, competing unattached, started with a first-round bye before matching up against Zell Bieberle of Colby Community College winning in a 6-1 decision. Broze won the next two straight bouts advancing to the Championship matchup against Ivan Deleon of Nebraska-Kearney. Broze got pinned in the 1:47 mark to take second place overall.

Hatlestad, competing unattached, lost in a 9-2 decision over Robert Stroh of Wyoming, followed by three straight bouts to head into the third-place match. Hatlestad, once again matched up against Wymoing’s Robert Stroh redeeming himself to win in a 4-3 decision to take a third-place finish.

Blasius, competing unattached, had a bye the first-round then won in a 9-2 decision over Kregg Clarke of Fort Hays State. Blasius went on winning the next two consecutive bouts before falling at the 1:02 mark to Gavin Grater of Colby Community College. He went on winning in a 12-0 major decision over Jesse Martinex of New Mexico, followed by a 11-6 decision over Phil Young of Colorado State to take third-place.

Amo, competing unattached, started off winning in a 5-0 decision against Willy Holdren of Colorado State University, followed by falling to Easton Hargrave of New Mexico Highlands. Weber continued with a bye, followed by winning two straight bouts before losing to Sterling Terry of Midland in a sudden victory of 7-5 where Amo took a fourth-place.

Wahlstrom, competing unattached, started his day off with a bye before matching up against Brain Spencer of Nebraska-Kearney with a pin at the 6:58 mark. Wahlstrom advanced to wrestle against Zen Ikehara losing in a 2-0 decision. Wahlstrom won the next three consecutive bouts before losing in an 8-2 decision to Lukas Poloncic to tab a fourth-place finish.

Vieyra, competing unattached, started the day off with three byes before wrestling against Kyle Morse of Air Force pinning his opponent at the 3:31 mark. Vieyra followed by losing in a major decision of 10-2 to Fort Hays State’s Lawson Ludwin. Vieyra went to the fifth-place matchup against teammate Adrain Lozano, where Vieyra defeated his teammate in a medical forfeit to take fifth-place.

Weber, competing unattached, started his day off with a bye, followed by matching up with Bryce Lewis of Fort Hays State, where he lost in an 8-6 decision. Weber received a bye the next round, then matched up with teammate Bradyn Neises. Weber beat Neises in a sudden victory to advance against Josh Thomson of Central Missouri pinning him at the 2:35 mark. Weber went on to take fifth-place after a technical fall 18-1 against Tim Rice of Hastings.

The Vikings are idle next weekend before opening a busy weekend to follow at Dakota Wesleyan-hosted triangular with Northwestern on Dec. 4 in Mitchell, S.D. Augustana will then square off with South Dakota State at the Sanford Pentagon on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
