German health minister warns against gatherings: 'I'm really not a party pooper'

Germany’s health minister warned Monday against social gatherings and parties even as Europe appears to largely have a handle on the spread of coronavirus.

Politico reports that Jens Spahn said he didn’t want to be a “party pooper,” but cautioned against such events anyway.

“I’m really not a party pooper or a spoilsport … but now is not the time for this,” said Spahn, according to the news outlet.

Spahn’s comments come as Germany remains one of Europe’s success stories in terms of total coronavirus infections and related deaths; around 200,000 Germans have been infected since the beginning of the pandemic, and fewer than 10,000 deaths have been recorded.

His remarks also follow near-daily viral images and videos of U.S. citizens returning to pre-pandemic behavior in recent weeks, packing beaches, rivers and even amusement parks to beat the summer heat despite warnings from health officials about the possible spread of coronavirus.

Many U.S. states, including Florida and Texas, have continued to see rates of new coronavirus infections spike, causing some to pause plans to reopen nonessential businesses and public spaces.
