CHICAGO, IL — Widespread caution over the new coronavirus has led to business and school closures, along with an increase in what’s known as “social distancing.” Many people are practicing social distancing to avoid the spread of the coronavirus, but this —in addition to coronavirus fears in general— may have unintended consequences for those also suffering from depression, anxiety and other mental health issues.
Words Matter
Rachel Kazez, LCSW, Chicago-based therapist and founder of All Along, which helps people understand mental health and find therapy, says loneliness seems built in to the name “social distancing.” She said she “wishes they called it body distancing,” because many of those practicing it have the tools to socialize virtually but have limited in-person contact.
“While we can socialize remotely — and for some this may feel like plenty — for many of us, the in-person component is vital to feeling heard, seen, connected and all those other warm-and-fuzzies, and there is a great deal of loss right now as we miss out on in-person contact,” she said.
Dealing With Loneliness While Social Distancing
Patch asked Kazez what we can do to mitigate loneliness or boredom in the event that we are practicing social distancing. She says it all starts with acceptance.
“First, accept that you may be lonely and bored. This is a weird, unprecedented situation. There has to be an adjustment period.”
Kazez suggests that the key is to focus on the opportunities that arise from these new circumstances. “Let this time be your laboratory, and consider what strengths you could build now that you’d benefit from in a few months,” she said. “At the same time, no pressure! You can just get through the next few days and figure it out then.”
For some, these opportunities, may include:

“Put something up in your window to greet or entertain other members of your community,” Kazez said. “Find something new, interesting, or beautiful every day. Share that with a friend.”
Coping With Anxiety And Depression
Kazez said there are several ways to cope with feelings of anxiety or depression, whether they’re linked to a job loss or just plain loneliness. She recommends mindfulness and non-rigid routines.
She also mentioned the benefit of exercise in dealing with depression or anxiety.
