New fumed silica plant by Evonik and Wynca goes on stream

The joint venture between Evonik and the Chinese company Wynca – Evonik Wynca (Zhenjiang) Silicon Material is starting-up of its new fumed silica plant.

Located in the Zhenjiang New Material Industry Park in Jiangsu province, the plant is Evonik’s first fumed silica production site in China.

The joint venture will combine Evonik’s product technology with Wynca’s silicone industry chain, producing high-value fumed silica products through the comprehensive use of monomer by-products, methyltrichlorosilane and chlorosilane from Wynca. Meanwhile, the by-product hydrochloric acid will also be fully utilised as a raw material for Wynca Zhenjiang Site.

Circular economy

This production loop is expected to contribute to synergies among silicone monomer, chlorosilane and fumed silica production, and ultimately to a circular economy. With this new joint venture, Evonik regards itself to be well positioned to build a complete global supply chain of fumed silica for customers in China and Asia.

What are your memories like of that season without a fault that enabled you to enter the history books?

Only good memories! We had the impression that nothing could happen to us. There were several matches during which we were behind, but we knew that we had the mental resources to come back in the match and reverse the score.

What did this season mean to you and your team-mates?

The most important thing was to win the title. Then to have achieved that without losing a match was almost like the cherry on top of the cake. But, at the time, we did not realise the significance of our performance. It took several years to realise the full extent of it. Fo us, it was the mark of extraordinary constancy and a recompense for our individual and collective exceptional quality that we had in our squad.

It was without a doubt the best consecration that we have ever experienced. Such success has the same value was winning the Champions League where it is often luck, form of the moment, the amount of injuries and suspensions that play a capital role, a decisive one.

What was the great strength of your team?

We had a group that was very together with individuals who had great experience at the top level and who could make the difference at every moment. With the French internationals, who were some of the best players in the world. Without forgetting Dennis Bergkamp. We had an international star in each position. The chemistry was right and we really enjoyed playing together. But our best quality, was speed.

What role did Arsène Wenger play?

We were perfectly prepared, Arsène Wenger was one of the first managers to use video footage to dissect our opponents and to analyse our performances with the tiniest details, We also had very complex statistics. For example, we knew whether or not, from the 70 minute mark, an opponent would break physically. Nothing was left to chance.

Can PSG imitate Arsenal?

PDMS coated stainless-steel mesh for the removal of microplastics

Researchers have designed a superhydrophobic 304 stainless steel mesh to capture microplastics. The microplastics separation can be explained from a colloid point of view.

The use of microplastics is a global issue that affects the environment, the economy and human health. Scientists now describe a superhydrophobic 304 stainless steel obtained by combining chemical etching and PDMS modification. Among other techniques, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HR-XPS) were used to identify the hierarchical structure as well as the chemical composition of the surface. The stainless-steel mesh was superhydrophobic (159°) and superoleophilic (0°).

Removing high-density polyethylene microplastics from water

The coating presented high stability against abrasion of SiC abrasive paper as well as in the presence of different pH values in acidic or alkaline conditions. In addition, taking advantage of the coating’s wetting properties, the reseachers have shown that the superhydrophobic surface can also be used to remove high-density polyethylene microplastics from water. A surface mechanism promoting the removal of microplastics is also proposed, considering the surface properties of the solid pollutants as well as the wetting properties of the superhydrophobic coating.

The study has been published in Progress in Organic Coatings, Volume 170, September 2022.

Review: Advances in steel surface treatment via green conversion coatings

A new a review study focuses on recent advances in the steel surface treatment via novel/green conversion coatings for anti-corrosion applications.

Replacing the chromate and phosphate conversion coatings (CCs) with nontoxic ones has played a key role in CC research in recent years. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to discovering and modifying the toxic CC alternatives, much of the research has been restricted to a few numbers of green CCs.

Addressing the toxicity issue of CCs

A new study has aimed to review the recent attempts that have been made in this area of research to address the toxicity issue of CCs, with a focus on the steel substrate. It includes investigations on different CCs: cerium (CeCC), neodymium (NdCC), lanthanum (LaCC), zirconium (ZrCC), titanium (TiCC), trivalent chromium (TCC), molybdate (MoCC), silicate (SiCC), and silane (SilCC). Surface studies, electrochemical measurements, CCs’ comparison, and film formation mechanisms were summarized. Imparting adhesion to the steel/organic coating interface or the delamination of the organic coating was discussed.

Moreover, the influence of several steel substrates (coated and uncoated) and solution parameters (pH, temperature, concentration, stirring, and immersion time) on the CCs properties were outlined. Various methods (such as additives, heat treatment, and subsequent film treatment) that have been employed to improve the green CCs properties and make them comparable to their harmful counterparts were explored.
