Lighthouse

The Challenge

Every day, on average, 20% of the world’s freshwater supply is wasted through pipe leakage. Undetected leaks are not just wasteful – they can to lead to ruptures, flooding and major property damage. But digging for the source of a leak is expensive, imprecise and disruptive to crowded city streets.

Design Journey

Dr. You Wu of MIT spent more than six years working on this solution during his PhD research. He built dozens of prototypes, performed real-world tests and modeled fluid turbulence with a variety of computer simulations before arriving at a working robot.

The Solution

His creation is called Lighthouse. These robots have soft rubber membrane bodies with flexible sensors that respond to minor pressure changes. They fit into a variety of pipe sizes, can negotiate tee junctions, and work in both plastic and metal pipes with much better results than current technology. Using robots like these can save enough water to meet the needs of a billion people, without needing any new infrastructure.

Azcatl

The Challenge

The world’s population may reach 9 billion or more by mid-century, but feeding this many people conventionally requires enormous amounts of land, energy and water. Azcatl (Nahuatl for “ant”) is an effort to nurture an abundant natural resource in a way that is not only environmentally friendly but which can also supply an additional income for traditional farmers.

Design Journey

The team members carefully studied current food production methods and raw material inputs.

After working with biologists, researchers and aquaculturalists, it became apparent that insects can be an ideal substitute for livestock as a source of protein in many regions. The secret was to combine 3D printing with biodegradable PLA corn-based plastic resin.

The Solution

The Azcatl is a 3D-printed ant’s nest, used to provide a ready-made home for an ant species whose pupae have been consumed as a delicacy in Mexico for hundreds of years. Unlike natural nests, these simulated homes can be re-used and are not broken when harvesting the food source. The nest’s are also biodegradable, consume few resources, and can be easily scaled to provide protein to many communities.

O-Wind Turbine

The Challenge

Small-scale power generation would be a great boon to the increasing proportion of the world’s population living in urban environments. However, cities are complex artificial landscapes that create and channel wind gusts in random directions. Conventional wind turbines require wind pressure from a single direction, making this a complex task to overcome.

Design Journey

The initial design was an attempt to make a planetary rover for NASA that could be powered in a straight line using multi-directional winds. A variety of geometries were computer modeled, and various working prototypes made from paper, cardboard and fabric. The successful design uses a multi-faceted sphere that rotates on a single axis regardless of wind direction.

The Solution

The O-Wind Turbine works by exploiting Bernoulli’s principle. Air enters through large openings but exits through smaller ones, creating a pressure differential that induces mechanical motion. This means the sphere is self-directing and can produce power almost anywhere with little maintenance, perfect for apartment dwellers. The University of Leicester is providing additional 3D printing and engineering support to refine prototypes for eventual certification and mass production.

Potato Plastic

The Challenge

Plastic contamination of the environment is now a major concern on land and sea. Petroleum-based plastics are very durable and can last for hundreds of years, but the vast majority of plastic waste is in the form of single-use utensils generated by the fast food industry. Is there a way to make a useful, inexpensive plastic substitute that can conserve resources and help to save the planet?

Design Journey

Pontus Törnqvist is a design student at Lund University in Sweden. He set out to find a plastic alternative that was not only sustainable and biodegradable but that would actually reward the act of littering by supplying valuable nutrients in whatever landscape it’s deposited. He did this through endless experimentation with various organic matter, tending to favor seaweed as a nutrient-rich possibility, but it failed to bind into a good useable solid. Only by accident, as with so many great inventions of the past, did he stumble on the answer.

The Solution

Just a heated slurry of water and potato starch, Potato Plastic can be formed into utensils, cups or thin sheets without the need for expensive metal-forming tools and dies, as would be the case with plastic injection molding. It naturally degrades in a few months and makes good use of cosmetically unappealling potatoes that might not otherwise sell at the grocery store.

Pawnbroking is a very old financial service – in fact it’s believed to be the oldest form of money lending in the world. The first record of pawn loans have been found in China and date back to around 200 BC. Records of active pawnbrokers exist in almost every era and culture since – either as something which was brought over by foreign traders, or independently established. However, pawnbroking didn’t reach Europe until the Middle Ages – even though the practice was well established in other parts of the world for centuries beforehand.

The word pawnbroking itself does not come from the original Chinese iteration of the trade, but from the Latin word for ‘pledge’, which is ‘pignus’, and over the years has eventually become ‘pawn’.

Pawnbroking in Popular Culture

The vast majority of us are familiar with St. Nicholas – the Christian Saint who is also known as Santa Claus. It is thought that St. Nick was a secret gift-giver, which is why he has become such a huge part of the Christmas traditions we know so well. What you may not know, however, is that St. Nicholas is also the patron saint of pawnbrokers. Although very little is known about him, according to legend he once gave three small bags of gold to a very poor man who was about to sell his three daughters into slavery, as he could not afford to house and feed them; nor could he afford a dowry so that they could be married. The three bags of gold saved the daughters from being sold, and the symbol of the modern pawnbroker – three golden balls – are said to originate from this tale.

If you know the traditional nursery rhyme song, ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’, then you may have been singing about pawnbroking without even realising it. The famous rhyme was written in around 1850 and is thought to refer to pawning a coat in order to get money for food; ‘half a pound of tuppenny rice’ and ‘half a pound of treacle’. The last line, ‘Pop goes the weasel’ actually isn’t about an animal at all. ‘Weasel and stoat’ was Cockney rhyming slang for ‘coat’ and to ‘pop’ something meant to pawn it.

Notable ‘real-life’ customers of the early pawn loan are Pope Leo X and King Edward III, who both took advantage of – what was at the time – a relatively new form of borrowing. Pope Leo X officially approved the practice of pawnbroking under the Catholic Church in 1515 and once had to pawn his own silver and palace furniture in order to pay his extravagant personal bills. King Edward III however, required money to fund the military for the Hundred Years’ War, so he pawned his jewels to raise the funds.

Pawnbroking in Modern History

Since the Victorian times, pawnbroking has gone through a number of changes. Many stories and accounts from the time portray pawnbrokers as unscrupulous, and their customers as poor and desperate. Unfortunately, this ‘romanticised’ view of the trade has done a lot of harm to the reputation of pawnbroking. Many still believe that it’s an unregulated, unscrupulous industry, when in fact it’s been heavily regulated for quite some time.

These days, pawn loans can be taken out on a huge number of items from precious jewellery, gold, diamonds and gems, to art, antiques, collectibles and even designer fashion. The industry has seen something of a resurrection: pawn loans were not as desired after the Second World War due to the introduction of social welfare. Since the 1980s however, the financial world has gone through some of the biggest changes yet.

Now that the 2008 recession is becoming a distant memory and consumers have more options than ever before when it comes to borrowing money, pawnbroking is a legitimate and professional avenue to go down. For well over 2,000 years pawnbroking has held on and thrived in almost every culture around the world – if it didn’t work for both the customer and the lender, then it certainly wouldn’t have lasted this long. Pawnbroking Today

Today – in 2019 – pawnbroking is a highly professional and heavily regulated industry. Since the 2008 recession, financial institutions and money lenders have had stricter rules to follow, so that the same situation cannot arise again. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) took over consumer credit from the Office of Fair Trading in 2014 and has created many new rules and guidelines for lenders to follow in the years since.

Pawnbrokers are regulated in much the same way that a bank or building society is – they must be authorised by the FCA in order to legally lend money to you. Pawnbrokers are also not allowed to make any profit from any pawned item which ends up on their shelves due to failed repayments. Many people do not realise this, but they cannot sell the item for more than the pawned amount – and if it does end up selling for more, they have to legally pay the original owner the difference. This rule has been instated so that the more unscrupulous lenders are discouraged from lending to people they know cannot repay the loan, simply to gain the item for future profit.

If you’re looking to switch things up this spring, Paris-based hairstylist Joleen Emory recommends pairing a fishtail braid with your bun. “This is great for when you want to look glam in the spring without much effort — especially on days you don’t know what to do with your hair.”

Here are Emory’s step-by-step tips on how to elevate your everyday bun for medium- to long-length hair:  

1. Start with two small sections of your front hair. Take one piece from the left and move it onto the right, then move another section from right to left, like you would with a fishtail braid.
2. Continue crisscrossing one strand after another until you reach the crown of your head. Seal the deal with bobby pins before continuing on to the next step.
3.  Then take the rest of your hair and roll it into a high bun starting where your braid ends. Use bobby pins instead of an elastic to lock it in so you can make the bun as big or messy as you want.
4. Gently tug on your braids for added volume. To make it even more spring-friendly, choose a colorful hair accessory (like a pastel pink oversized hairpin).  

Bob Cuts

Spring is a time of new beginnings, so it’s no surprise that we’re already seeing some daring spring haircuts trending this season.

Bob cuts first took off in the 1930s as a form of rebellion against traditional female beauty standards. Today this haircut is just as bold and beautiful with a dozen different variations — whether you’re looking to play it safe with an outgrown bob, go even shorter with a chin-length Amelie-esque french bob, or pair it with short bangs for a timeless Audrey Hepburn-inspired pixie look.

4. Create some light curls with a curling iron for a hairstyle that’s more polished.

Ribbon-Wrapped Hairdos

The possibilities are endless when it comes to enhancing a simple hairstyle. French hairstylist Clémence Dolmaire recommends wrapping your ribbon of choice around your bun or ponytail for a look that’s more put together for spring. “

Something that’s so simple to instantly freshen up any look is adding fabrics like a ribbon into your hairstyles,” Dolmaire said. “Next time you don’t know what to do, throw your hair in a big bun and wrap a ribbon around it. It’s so much classier than a normal bun and elevates your entire look without much effort.”

You can even create a braid with your ribbon woven in it. “Try braiding your hair while adding a ribbon into it,” added Dolmaire. “Even if your hair is looking lifeless or you have little flyaways all over causing frizz, this hairstyle keeps your hair put together with minimal effort. Just be sure to add a little hair oil for hydration and shine.” 

Choose a ribbon with a bright color or a floral pattern to make your look more springtime-chic. If you don’t have any ribbons on hand, opt for a bandana or over-the-top scrunchie for a casual spring hairstyle. 

Bubble Braids

Bubble braids offer up a fun twist on classic ponytails. The best part is that this style can be done in under a minute but looks like it took much longer.

Here’s how to master the bubble braid in three easy steps:

1. Tie your hair into a high ponytail.
2. Take an elastic and tie it a couple of inches further down your ponytail. Keep doing this with other elastics until you make it down your hair.
3. Gently tug on the hair in the spaces between your elastics to add some shape and volume to your hair “bubbles.”

As the weather warms up, finding hairstyles that are both cute and help keep your hair out of your face is key when it comes to keeping you feeling cool (both temperature and style-wise). Elastic bands are the newest IG-worthy hair tool coming back in fashion that are perfect for crafting any easy springtime look. You can use them for a half-up ponytail, fishtail braids, space buns and so many other creative styles. 

Here’s one type of style you can try using elastics that works for any hair type, including curly hair:

1. Part your hair in the middle.
2. With your elastics, tie one small section of the very front of your hair that’s right above your ear.
3. Now tie another section about 1 inch away, incorporating the remaining hair from the first hair tie.
4. Follow this pattern, tying new sections together with the previous section of hair until you get to your part.
