6 Digital Publishing Platforms You Should Know

Today, publishers use many tools to create digital editions of publications and to make them available to a wide audience in various communication channels. There are many publishing platforms you can use, and each one offers different functions. Do you want to try your hand at the world of digital publishing? Have you heard a bit about publishing platforms and are wondering which applications are the best? Check out our list.

What are digital publishing platforms?

The digital publishing platform is a set of tools that make it easier to publish longer text (but also graphic-focused editions, e.g. catalogues or albums) in a digital form, readable on electronic devices, like a computer, tablet or smartphone. You can probably guess that digital publishing applications need to be responsive. This is just one of the many features that popular publishing platforms offer.

Are you considering conquering the digital publishing market? Releasing interactive content online has many advantages:

  1. Traditional materials are more expensive than e-books due to the cost of production and distribution. By creating digital editions, you give potential customers cheaper access to valuable content.
  2. You can reach audiences from all over the world, and your customers don’t have to go to a bookstore to get a book or magazine. They can easily access an interactive, engaging publication from their own mobile device or computer, wherever they are.
  3. Fewer and fewer people read traditional texts. They look for information on the Internet. Today you can reach with your magazine or book even those people who don’t buy printed content.
  4. Online publishing allows you to quickly present your ideas and discoveries to potential audiences.

Platforms for publishing magazines and e-books

An interesting digital publication should attract the reader’s attention. The publishing platform must therefore allow for you creating an unusual design, building projects of advanced, interactive elements, and provide you with tools that will facilitate promoting your publication and brand (e.g. SEO tools, analytical tools, pop-up forms, etc.). A comfortable platform combines many tools and allows you to not only quickly create a magazine or e-book, but also to put the document in an online store and on your own website, as well as to charge for downloading or sharing content without having to pay a commission for the platform.

Issuu

One interesting option for publishers planning to change their publishing platform is Issuu. It allows you to transform your content assembled in the form of a PDF file into an interactive publication. This platform stands out due to its visual story creator – a tool that allows you to easily share engaging content on social media (Facebook Stories, Instagram Stories, Snapchat Stories).

Source: Issuu

After designing your magazine or e-book, you can share it with readers via Issuu in the form of a subscription or a single purchase. Thanks to the possibility of embedding your e-publication on the website, you have the opportunity to promote your new project more intensively. Issuu also provides you with analytical tools with which you’ll be able to better understand the readers of the content you publish.

Joomag

Joomag can also transform a simple PDF file into an interesting digital publication. This publishing tool will be especially appreciated by novice publishers who are looking for a more intuitive solution. The convenient text editor and the availability of a variety of templates that you can adapt to the needs of your publication will make your work easier.

Joomag allows you to add music, videos and slides to your publication. Such a modern approach to creating digital content is becoming more and more popular. Users on the web scroll and browse through content instead of reading it cover to cover. Interactive elements attract the reader’s attention and make it easier to interest them with the content. Joomag runs its own online store with digital publications where you can put and sell your text.

Flipsnack

The Flipsnack publishing platform can also facilitate the creation of interactive publications. As with other tools of this type, you start by loading a PDF file with the text that needs to be edited. As the publisher you’ll have access to a large library of templates. The functionality that allows you to edit several elements of your project at once and “close” those that you consider to be properly prepared will help you save time. This way, you protect these elements from being accidentally moved or modified. It’s a great tool for designing magazines because it lets you work with layers that you can switch between to navigate more efficiently on the pages with lots of graphics and text boxes.

An example of a magazine published on Flipsnack

You can put the prepared interactive publication on the Flipsnack Store sales platform. This will allow you to offer subscriptions and send the content on a monthly basis – an ability that magazine publishers will surely appreciate. The portal allows you to be up to date on sales – you can set by yourself an automatic notification every time someone purchases a subscription. In addition, by using a special tool, you can build a virtual bookshelf and integrate it with your website to better promote your product.

CMS platforms

There are many CMSs (Content Management Systems) on the market that make it easier to publish and manage content. How to choose the right CMS for your business? First of all, you should carefully analyse the platforms available on the market. They have various purposes – they can be used to build a website, edit and publish content (e.g. a blog), and even to run an online store. Below you’ll find some examples of CMSs that may be interesting for a publisher looking for a functional tool for working with content.

Drupal

Drupal CMS is an open source content management system that can be used to build custom publishing portals. It has several interesting modules that allow you to use it to build a platform for working with text, tailored to the individual needs of any publisher. One of them is the Content Moderation module which allows you to define the transition between the states of a publication (draft, for revision, published).

Using the Content Moderation module in Drupal

The Paragraphs module is also useful – it’ll help you create ready-made components or define templates that will facilitate the daily work of non-technical editors while using this CMS. Thanks to the Commerce module, you can build your own online store selling the publications you have created. Thunder, on the other hand, is a Drupal distribution designed for professional publishers. It makes it easier to schedule the publication of posts at a specific time.

There are several more reasons why employing a Drupal-based solution will increase the productivity of the publishing house. The taxonomy system in this CMS allows you to categorise the content according to the selected criteria. In combination with the possibility of filtering, tagging will significantly improve text navigation. Editors will also appreciate versioning, which allows you to track every change in an article and – if necessary – roll back to previous versions.

The default text editor in Drupal is CKEditor. It’s one of the HTML editors that are available on the market. It allows you to quickly and easily enter text on a website using an interface similar to the one OpenOffice users are familiar with. You can also diversify the published content by uploading images and videos.

WordPress

WordPress is a popular CMS platform used to build commercial and non-commercial websites. It can be an interesting alternative to publishing platforms and tools for creating e-books and online magazines. It’s an open-source CMS, so definitely a cheaper solution than a publishing platform that requires subscription. WordPress has a special PaperLit plugin, thanks to which the publisher can turn the content into an interactive magazine. You can use it to create your own cover for the document you’re working on. The right plugin will allow you to distribute the designed magazine in the form of an application via the App Store or Google Play.

MetroPublisher

CMS Metro Publisher was created with publishers of online magazines in mind. There are templates, thanks to which creating consecutive numbers of magazines is simple and doesn’t take much time. The tool allows you to categorise the published text into one of four groups:

  • articles,
  • reviews,
  • roundups,
  • events.

Publishers looking to profit from advertising will appreciate the possibility to highlight the sponsored content through special formatting. It can be done very quickly, you just need to tag the relevant fragment of text. Users with the PRO accounts can customise the ad styles to suit their needs.

On the brand’s website, you’ll also find numerous tutorials, thanks to which you’ll quickly learn to use the full potential of this tool.

Summary

There are many solutions that a publisher looking for a functional publishing platform can use. It all depends on your individual needs and your budget. Remember that while creating a solution tailored to your business can be a significant investment, it often saves you a lot of time, trouble, and expense in the future. In our Drupal agency, we’ll be happy to help you choose the right tool.

5 Reasons To Outsource a Web Development Project

Paraphrasing the Bard’s masterpiece, one might ask the question: “to outsource or not to outsource?” I have a suspicion – bordering on certainty, however – that you have repeatedly wondered whether the work on a project of creating a website for a client could be made easier with the help of a software development company. And if it still happens that you are not entirely convinced by the idea, provided below are some reasons why you should do it.

Argument #1 | Money

When cooperating with an outsourced team of Drupal development experts you can obtain a measurable, calculable benefit. The final value is influenced by various factors: the size and complexity level of the project, the programming language, the client’s budget, the region, etc. Employing a full-time developer (and/or full-time developers) is a cost that on the one hand reduces the level of income within the project itself, and on the other – continues after the project’s completion. While the first part is quite easy to include a financial forecast (launching the recruitment process, the developer’s monthly salary, providing the work equipment, etc.), the second is a bit vague. Because how can you be sure that your company will soon be implementing a similar project, for which the newly-employed developer can be used? Or even worse – how long will you have to wait before commencing such a project? Or in the worst-case scenario – will you simply pass on the projects that your developer will not be able to undertake? Risk reduction has a real impact on your company’s budget – the more question marks you erase, the more space you will gain for other activities.

Argument #2 | Stable process

Some say that money is not everything. They are right. The financial argument is only a contribution to further, in-depth risk analysis. And what if it turns out that during the project, the knowledge and skills of your new developer are not enough for him to be able to perform his tasks effectively? Sure, in such a situation you can just lay the developer off, but at the same time, there is a great danger that it will cause losing the project, and thus – the client. This is one of the bleakest visions. A disappointed client can then disseminate information about your company’s unprofessional approach to business partners, about your inability to manage the process – all existing testimonials will lose their value in this way, and your advertised credibility may be called a cheap sales pitch. Let us consider even a pessimistic assumption that a similar situation may occur in the context of cooperation with a software development company, and the developer does not come up to the expectations set on them. Can you opt-out of this cooperation? Yes, you can, and it does not necessarily have to affect the continuity of the project. The position change has a chance to go smoothly – a software development company keeps reserve developers who can enter the game at any time. It is important to obtain information on their quantity and shared competences at the beginning of an outsourcing-based cooperation. I will just duly add a few words about such a prosaic thing as an unplanned absence of a full-time developer (illness, unforeseeable circumstances). While just one day of absence will probably not slow down the work yet, a week may. So now we are going back to the previous thought: a contract signed with a software development company assures maintaining the continuity of work.

Argument #3 | Software development company vs. freelancers

You might ask me “what about hiring a freelancer?” And I will answer: the only argument in favour of hiring a freelancer instead of a full-time developer is saving the costs of a recruitment process, salary, and position maintenance. The risk of not ensuring the continuity of design works, however, still remains: illness, unforeseeable circumstances, or any other factor suddenly hindering the freelancer’s activity. And what if the freelancer receives a more attractive offer and decides to abandon your project overnight? A software development company team is… well, exactly that – a team. By adding a project manager and Scrum methodology to this team, you get a service that is complete in terms of the management. Software development company employees know each other personally, they have been working for various clients for years, they know in which areas they can count on each other. That is how you get a team that you would otherwise have to spend long months to build (if you would even actually consider it).

Argument #4 | Knowledge

In the text above I mentioned the knowledge. One should look at it from yet another perspective. The Drupal development company you contact will probably specialise in a given programming language, or in their portfolio, they will have cases corresponding to the expectations of your client (after all, you will be looking for such specialists). So, we are talking here about numerous projects, years of experience, or even certifications obtained by the developers of the software development company. And if you would like to avoid the risk of your potential client taking you for someone lacking certain knowledge, you can consult the project requirements with a specialised software development company first. As a result, you will receive an accurate estimation of the time and costs needed to complete the web development tasks, and in addition (or maybe above all) you will look in the eyes of a potential client as a trustworthy manager, for whom it is not a problem to ask for some time in order to come back with precise information the next day, the day after tomorrow, in three days. However, the use of consulting can also result in added value – you will have the opportunity to see and evaluate the working methods and the approach to the issue of the developer and/or project manager of the software development company.

Argument #5 | Product

Expanding the topic of consulting, you can offer the client various technological solutions. Provided, of course, that your client does not have any specific requirements in this aspect and remains open to ideas – ergo: they want the best solution, and the tools being used for this purpose are a side issue. So, you are not limited by – for example – a specific programming language, thus the field of activity and the possibilities are greater. Can you also identify the added value here? Of course. After the completion of programming works the software development company can provide a support service for the created website. The client will be provided with support, which can be an important argument for them in the context of security, updates, implementation of additional functionalities. Yes, I am aware that this is an indirect sales argument, but it is an argument, nonetheless. Ultimately, the client will settle the support costs with the software development company, but it was you who presented them with the option that could have significantly contributed to signing the contract with you. So, you not only contribute to the product, but you ensure its further effective operation. If your company is a digital agency, this opportunity can be extremely valuable.

Final thoughts

Thanks to cooperating with a software development company you manage your budget effectively, so you can support other areas of your company with the resources saved. During the project implementation, you have the option of scaling: adding more or removing the current resources without having to recruit and train people or involve the human resources department. Therefore, you get the support of an efficient team that you would need several months to build on your own. You can be sure that you provide your client with a stable process in terms of technology and design. Should I keep going, or have I captured your imagination enough and encouraged you to consider the next project in the context of cooperation with a software development company?

12 Intranet Benefits – Improve Your Business and Engage Employees

There are many reasons for an organization to have an intranet. Such an internal system allows a company to streamline business processes, but most importantly, it makes it easier for teams to perform their daily tasks, systematizes employees’ knowledge, provides a convenient way to communicate, and much more. Learn about 12 benefits of an intranet.

What is intranet and its benefits?

An intranet is a private, secure network for sharing information and tools within an organization. Unlike the internet, which is accessible to the public, an intranet is restricted to authorized company users. The system is a central hub for internal communication, collaboration, and information management, allowing employees to access company resources. It fosters a cohesive and efficient work environment.

Below, you’ll find specific intranet benefits for which you should consider using this platform in your organization.

1. Streamlined project management and teamwork

One of the key benefits of an intranet is its ability to help teams collaborate and cooperate. Intranets are virtual places where teams can work on projects, use document sharing, and communicate with each other in real time. This improves project management by ensuring everyone is on the same page. It also reduces miscommunication and delays.

Team members can efficiently coordinate their actions with intranet features such as shared task lists and document libraries. Project managers can assign tasks, set deadlines, and follow the activity, all within the intranet. This keeps everyone informed and promotes accountability and transparency.

One specific benefit during a typical workday is the ability to track start and end times. The implemented calendar lets employees and managers know who is available and can distribute tasks effectively.

Another example of intranet benefits is that a project manager can easily track the progress of a project on specific tasks. And if it turns out that the task hasn’t been marked as completed or doesn’t have the status “in progress” for some reason, the manager sees it immediately and can contact the appropriate person.

What else? By exporting specific information from the intranet platform, the manager can then perform an analysis related to a particular employee’s work or the context of a project. This knowledge can be invaluable for planning and improving management in the future.

2. Time savings in general

Time management is one of the most important elements of any business process. The better you manage it, the more productive your employees will be. Successively reducing the time spent on individual tasks and looking for improvement opportunities among them is the way to practical improvement of the mentioned processes.

An intranet system is a tool that facilitates this. How to do it? It’s enough to start with something as mundane as e-mail correspondence. Checking the inbox, replying to messages, and searching for important attachments. The list is long.

What if you could replace it with a common area that everyone can access and where changes in the document flow are transparent? Quick access to information and efficient updating of the status of a given business process, i.e. information management, is provided by the intranet platform.

Email is not only the correspondence between users but also the newsletter. It takes time to set up, address specific recipients within the company, and send. Moreover, if this newsletter is essential for the life of the organization, the certainty that each recipient has received and read it means waiting.

In an intranet, you can simplify the distribution of the newsletter. Instead of sending such a message, the administrator can indicate a place with an important message and also have functionality that informs about reading this content. The added value for employees is also that it takes less time to find and re-read the newsletter than scrolling through hundreds of emails in the inbox.

3. Better internal communication within an organization

As mentioned in the newsletter example above, an intranet allows you to quickly and easily share information with employees at all levels of the organization. This can include company news, management updates, project information, or important announcements. This promotes transparency and keeps all team members up to date. On the intranet, you can publish different content types, such as running an internal blog. Tagging posts makes it easier to find a particular topic.

An example of a view for adding a new article to an intranet

Communication is also about the flow of information in both directions. In order for employees to cooperate efficiently, they must at least know the availability of team members. It’s a good idea to implement a calendar in the intranet system, where each employee can inform others about planned days and hours of work or submit vacation requests. It’s a very effective way to improve the management of a particular business project. It is then known which person is assigned to certain tasks.

Every employee can have their own profile on the intranet, which includes the history of all their affairs, and the correspondence with the management.

4. Quick access to the company values and information

A modern intranet makes it possible to create, collect, and easily search relevant information and corporate knowledge. This allows employees to quickly access the resources they need, such as manuals, procedures, or a corporate FAQ page, which promotes a better understanding of organizational information and company values.

I don’t think there’s any need to convince you that this is a clear benefit of an employee intranet.

Instead of emailing each other updated versions of files, creating new directories on Google Drive, and accidentally sharing them with an unauthorized person, all these things can be “closed” with a well-functioning intranet. This applies to the aspect of business processes and projects that team members are working on.

The intranet also supports the Human Resources aspect. The guidelines published on the intranet and an efficient search engine can effectively support everyone who needs to quickly find the content they are interested in.

The HR scope, which is sometimes very large (regulations, application forms, instructions, etc.), should also be organized in a way that allows the user to navigate it. For example, each instructional video, or even print screens that illustrate how to fill out a given form, saves time and avoids unnecessary involvement of third parties.

5. Simplified employee onboarding and training

Another crucial benefit of a company intranet is the improvement of employee onboarding and training processes. New hires can access all necessary training materials, company policies, and onboarding documents through the intranet. This centralized repository ensures that new employees have all the information they need from day one, facilitating a smoother transition into their new roles.

A modern intranet can host a variety of training resources, including videos, tutorials, and interactive courses. This not only standardizes the training process but also allows employees to learn at their own pace. Managers can track progress and ensure that all employees are meeting their training requirements.

In addition to onboarding, knowledge-sharing intranets support continuous learning and professional development. Organizations can create an extensive library of resources, including industry news, webinars, and practical tools. Employees can use these materials to stay on top of the latest trends and enhance their skills, contributing to their personal growth and the company’s overall success.

6. Increased employee engagement and satisfaction

Employee engagement is critical to the success of any organization, and intranet platforms play an important role in improving it.

Recognition and reward programs

One of the benefits of an intranet is the ability to implement recognition and reward programs. You can manage these through the intranet, allowing colleagues and managers to publicly recognize outstanding performance. This fosters a culture of appreciation and motivates employees to excel in their roles. Nothing increases engagement more than being recognized by a manager and/or peer.

Surveys

Every survey, and therefore feedback, has value. Both when it comes to answers to questions about how employees perceive the organization and how they are perceived in the organization. Surveys conducted on the company intranet can be a quarterly, semi-annual or annual assessment of the employer and the employee. They are particularly valuable for organizational culture because they take place as a cyclical process (and this is the distinguishing feature), and secondly due to the fact that both parties gain information about themselves. The added value here is transparency, the building of further mutual trust, and the space for improving the working environment.

Social interaction and community building

Modern intranet acts as a social platform where employees interact beyond work-related tasks. Features like social feeds, group chats, and interest-based forums help build a sense of community within the organization. Employees can share achievements, celebrate milestones, and engage in informal conversations, strengthening workplace relationships and boosting morale.

Innovations in the company culture

Using the feedback mentioned above and the modern intranet as a communication platform can effectively influence identifying needs and implementing innovations. Every new idea and suggestion can be discussed and analyzed to meet the expectations of the interested parties. The benefits of such an approach are incomparably greater than when management decides on a change without any prior consultation. Unfortunately, the costs of this type of action may be too high and the goals may not be achieved.

7. Better work-life balance and employee retention

Intranets can be a real game changer for work-life balance initiatives. They provide tools that enable flexible work arrangements. Employees can log in from anywhere, allowing them to work remotely or adjust their hours to better fit their personal lives. This kind of flexibility can really boost job satisfaction and help keep turnover rates low.

An example of an intranet with access to benefits such as yoga, mindfulness, or insurance, source: behance.net/droptica

Health and wellness programs

The corporate platforms are also great for promoting health and wellness programs. They can host a variety of resources, from fitness challenges and mental health support to nutrition tips and stress management tools. Easy access to these materials can really improve employee well-being and create a “healthier” workplace overall.

8. Cost reduction

The intranet can help you cut administrative costs. It offers email, newsletters, real-time updates of important documents, quick access to information, and online meetings, with a big emphasis on the mobile version. Thanks to this, you can organize a video call with employees no matter where they are, and that allows you to manage the business process more efficiently.

Moreover, by centralizing communication and document management, the intranet reduces the need for paper documents and physical storage, resulting in savings on printing and archiving costs. Automating repetitive tasks and workflows means you don’t need extra administrative staff, which means more cost savings.

Furthermore, by having all business applications in one intranet software, you don’t have to maintain several separate systems, which means a leaner and more cost-effective IT infrastructure. Overall, the intranet helps to make better use of resources and be more productive, which significantly reduces overall business costs.

9. Improved security and compliance

Security is critical for any organization, and a modern intranet provides a safe space to manage documents. Unlike some external communication tools, this platform offers controlled access to sensitive information, ensuring that only authorized individuals can view or edit important files. This greatly reduces the risk of data breaches and helps keep the company’s valuable information safe.

Compliance tracking and reporting

An intranet platform also makes it easier to stay on top of regulatory compliance. You can keep all your compliance documents in one place, track how well policies are being followed, and quickly generate reports when needed. This centralized approach makes audits much easier and helps ensure that the company is meeting all its legal and regulatory obligations, avoiding potential fines and legal issues.

10. Advanced decision making

One of the great things about using an intranet is that it gives you real-time access to all the critical business information you need. This means that managers and employees can make smart decisions quickly. Whether you’re looking at sales figures, project updates, or customer feedback, having this information at your fingertips ensures that you’re always working with the latest data.

Better reporting capabilities

Intranets can also generate detailed reports that provide insight into different parts of the business. You can customize these reports to track things like project progress, employee performance, or financial health. With these enhanced reporting tools, companies can spot trends, anticipate challenges, and seize opportunities-which is great for strategic planning and decision-making.

11. Crisis management

Effectively managing a crisis is critical for any organization, not only to ensure the safety of its employees but also to keep operations running smoothly. An intranet can be a lifesaver in such situations.

Emergency communication

In the event of a crisis (such as a hacking attack or data leakage), a reliable communication tool is essential. An intranet allows organizations to quickly share instructions with all employees, ensuring that everyone is in the loop and knows what to do. This rapid communication can help mitigate the impact of the incident.

Business continuity planning

Intranets are invaluable for business continuity planning during disruptions. They give employees access to critical information and resources, allowing them to communicate with colleagues and, if necessary, continue working remotely. This helps the organization stay operational and quickly recover from unexpected events.

12. Customizable and scalable solutions

Every business is unique, and an intranet can be shaped to fit those specific needs. From the overall look and feel to the functionalities it offers, an intranet can be customized to match a company’s brand and objectives. This level of personalization ensures that the intranet is not just another tool but a valuable asset that aligns perfectly with the organization’s goals.

Scalable for growth

As your business expands, your needs will change. Modern intranets are designed to be scalable, growing alongside your organization. Whether you need to add more users, introduce new features, or integrate with external tools, your company intranet can adapt to these changes. This flexibility ensures that your intranet remains useful and effective, no matter how big your business gets.

Integration with other systems

Today’s intranets don’t operate in isolation. They can integrate seamlessly with other enterprise systems like CRM and ERP software. This means data can flow smoothly between systems, cutting down on redundant data entry and boosting efficiency. 16 oz. Tapered Canning Jar

Simple and sleek, our 16 oz. Tapered Canning Jar is extremely similar to our 16 oz. Canning Jar. They share the same diameter, wick recommendations, and recommended wax fill line. The difference between the two, though, matters when it comes to labeling. The shoulder and base on the 16 oz. Tapered Canning Jar tapers a bit lower than our standard 16 oz Canning Jar, creating a 0.5” (1.3 cm) reduction in label area.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the standard 16 oz. Canning Jar, this sleek jar could be it. Just keep in mind that the maximum area for a label is reduced by half an inch (1.3 cm).

Note: The 16 oz. Tapered Canning Jar has a slightly green tint due to the manufacturer’s use of recycled glass. This coloring can vary between batches. We’ve found the green tint on these jars to be slightly less than the 16 oz. Canning Jars.

Looking for a lid?
The 16 oz. Tapered Canning Jar works with any of the #70 G Threaded lids; antique gold, black, gold, gold plastisol-lined, silver, pewter, rustic, white, or pewter daisy.

What are Open-Top Containers Used For?

The various industries in which open-top container movers are used is attributed to these machines’ unique designs and features. Here are some critical uses:

  • Heavy Machinery Transportation
Large machinery and equipment that cannot be taken apart are often moved with the help of open-top container movers. This refers to industrial machines, building implements, and also large parts.

  • Bulk Cargo Transport
Open-top containers are the most commonly used shipment methods in processing industries and shipping large quantities of scrap metal, wood, or paper. The open design provides free access for loading and unloading loose or irregularly shaped materials.

  • Project Cargo Shipping
The movement of non-standard and oversized items is commonly associated with large construction projects. Open-top container movers are indispensable in such circumstances, transporting the project cargo like generators, turbines, and also components of infrastructure projects.

  • Agriculture
Open-top containers are well-suited for the shipment of many agricultural products, such as grain or hay bales. The top-loading design of this product makes it much easier to manage and stack these products, leading to very efficient logistics in the agricultural industry.

  • Tarp Coverings
Using tarpaulin coverings on the open-top containers helps shield the cargo from all the elements. These strong covers protect the cargo from rain, wind, and other natural phenomena during transit, so it arrives at its target in good health.
