Premiership: Ellis Genge and Charles Piutau return for Bristol while Jack Yeandle is back to captain Exeter

There is one Premiership fixture scheduled for Friday night with Bristol Bers hosting Exeter Chiefs at Kingston Park.

Ellis Genge and Charles Piutau are back in Bristol Bears’ starting XV having missed last week’s defeat to Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park.

Genge is back at loosehead prop and Piutuau at full-back, while Toby Fricker also returns on the right wing and there’s a start for John Hawkins in the second-row.

Elsewhere, Harry Randall comes in at scrum-half where he partners Callum Sheedy, with Sam Bedlow rejoining Piers O’Conor in the Bristol Bears midfield and Rich Lane switching to the wing.

Among the replacements, back-up scrum-half Tom Whiteley is set for his first league appearance since February.

Some changes for Exeter as well

Meanwhile, Exeter Chiefs boss Ross Baxter has also made some changes to his starting line-up.

Injuries sustained in last weekend’s defeat at Sale Sharks to Jack Dunne, Dafydd Jenkins and Stu Townsend mean they all miss out, so into the fold come Jonny Gray, Christ Tshiunza and Jack Maunder.

Other changes see Jack Yeandle assume the captaincy at hooker in place of Luke Cowan-Dickie, who drops to the bench.

Richard Capstick gets the nod at number eight in place of Sam Simmonds, while in the back division Jack Nowell’s inclusion on the wing means Rory O’Loughlin reverts into the centre and Joe Simmonds starts at fly-half ahead of Harvey Skinner.

Form: Bristol Bears’ 100% winning record in Premiership Rugby this season ended with their 15-30 loss at Newcastle Falcons last Friday. The Bears have not lost at Ashton Gate in Premiership Rugby since Harlequins were the visitors on 13 March. Exeter Chiefs’ four game winning run in Premiership Rugby ended with their 20-28 reversal at Sale on Saturday. Exeter have won just once away from home in Premiership Rugby since February: 36- 21 at Worcester Warriors in Round Two. The last six meetings between the two clubs in Premiership Rugby have been evenly shared with three wins apiece. Exeter have visited Ashton Gate on nine previous occasions against all opponents and have only lost once: 33-40 to Bristol in Premiership Rugby in May. This figure also includes their European Champions Cup final victory over Racing 92 in 2020.

Ligue 1 Review – Week 20

Goats are becoming a common sight in French football. Being labelled a “goat” carries connotations of severe incompetence and was best illustrated by Marseille fans who held huge pictures of goats in the Velodrome stands, mocking their team’s abject form two seasons ago. The fact that prominent Bordeaux fan website “Girondins4ever” have plastered their Twitter profile with a team of goats, the iconic Bordeaux chevron emblazoned on their chests, illustrates the unfolding disaster at the Stade Matmut Atlantique.

Les Girondins’ 1-0 Saturday win at promoted Troyes was only Jocelyn Gourvennec’s charges second since a demoralising 6-2 thrashing in Paris last September and it proved once again, that without Brazilian starlet Malcom, they could yet be in real danger.

As veteran Czech midfielder Jaroslav Plasil trudged from a sodden, windswept Stade Louis Dior pitch as Bordeaux’s third sending off in an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to semi-pro fourth division club Granville last weekend, Bordeaux had rarely been so low; the calamitous loss only served to compound the misery of a league campaign that had promised to be their best since winning the Ligue 1 title in 2009 but has become a relegation battle.

Floundering in 15th at the winter break after just five points in the fourteen games before the trip to Troyes, the most astonishing aspect of Bordeaux’s demise remains Gourvennec continued presence as coach.

Unrelenting pressure from the media and supporters forced club president Stéphane Martin into a publicly addressing concerns but he avoided blaming Gourvennec’s lingering tenure for the deterioration despite acknowledging the dire situation. “We are in an unprecedented crisis.” Martin said, “We must stop talking about the situation of Jocelyn Gourvennec. All these questions about his fate, frankly, it becomes morbid.”

Martin’s apparent defence of his manager may turn out to be a thin one with Le Parisien reporting last week that the ex-Guingamp coach, Gourvennec took the small Breton club to Ligue 1 mid-table and the Europa League knockout stages after a glorious Coupe de France win in 2014, had until the end of the month, or even the end of the week, to prove his worth. Former Club Brugge boss Michel Preud’homme supposedly ordained as his successor, a loss to follow strugglers Troyes could have been Gourvennec’s last. The 45-year-old, aware of the pressure, refuted this; “I did not receive an ultimatum for the match in Troyes,” he explained, “although I know how important it is. I do not ignore the situation. I hear the discontent.”

Les Girondins’ vociferous core fan-base however were not so lenient. Prominent supporters group, The Ultramarines, released a damning statement even before the loss to Granville, affirming: “We will not stop our movements of protest and we will continue to ask for the resignation of the coach, who is no longer, for us, the man of the situation.” Further disenfranchised following the cup exit, the police were employed to supervise 20 of their number who berated their manager and players at the club’s Monday training session. Martin nevertheless again came to Gourvennec’s defence; “I think Jocelyn is clearly not the right target,” the President protested, “we’re convinced that Jocelyn is doing a good job.”

Since the humiliation in Granville, however, sparks of hope have finally started to appear. Centre back has been a problem area for Gourvennec all season, an attempt to permanently convert Jérémy Toulalan proving fruitless, making the acquisition of Paul Baysse from Malaga, superb for Nice in recent years, a crucial one. Meanwhile the loan signing of powerful defensive midfielder Soualiho Meïté from Monaco added significant weight to what had become an increasingly brittle spine. Both were stoic in the stabilising win over Troyes. Brazilian winger Malcom however remains Gourvennec’s strongest life line.

A superb first half run and dinked cross from the 20 year forward proved to be enough for the Bordeaux win, Gaëtan Laborde gleefully heading home, as once again Bordeaux’s attack heavily relied on the flare, power and pace of the stocky forward. Without him, Gourvennec would likely have been sacked well before Christmas as Malcom was largely responsible for the miserly five points his side have eked out since their thrashing in Paris. A clinical equaliser against Nantes, orchestrating play in the draw with OM and a thunderbolt in the win over St Étienne all proved pivotal.

Despite his clear superiority in imagination and technical ability, Malcom can lack consistency and despite his highlight reel hinting at the potentially world class player within, a continued stay in France could be crucial for his development; his tendency to drift in and out of games is a frustrating one. A fearful Martin meanwhile has no intention of letting him go just yet. “We are not going to separate from our best players, given our emergency situation.” he told L’Équipe “On paper, we do not have a team to go down. But, the reality is our margin relative to the relegation zone is low.”

Gourvennec’s reign is still precariously hanging in the balance and even with Malcom around to rescue him, a lack of goals from €10m striker Nicolas de Préville, an absence of pace or cohesion at the back and weak midfield creativity are huge problems. A corner may have been turned but Gourvennec and Malcom are far from moulding Bordeaux’s “goats” into an outfit assured of Ligue 1 survival. Should their Brazilian talisman be sold and a stubborn persistence with Gourvennec continue, the unthinkable could yet happen.

1 | Last season, Guingamp faded badly after a strong first half which included victories over Marseille, Lyon and PSG, eventually finishing tenth. Could this season’s edition be readying a reversal of that form? On recent evidence, the answer may just be yes, as the Breton side have won four of five in the league to move to seventh, just a point behind Nice. In Friday’s 2-0 win over Strasbourg, Nicolas Benezet was at the heart of the visitors’ thrilling play on the counter, playing a central attacking role with aplomb. If the former Nîmes man can stay fit, Antoine Kombouaré’s could find themselves back in the top six at season’s end.

2 | Montpellier and Monaco played to a scoreless draw in Saturday’s multiplex, but the match was hardly dull, with both goalkeepers producing several strong saves. Montpellier, rather than exhibiting the dour play one usually associates with them this season, gave as good as they got against the champions, with Junior Sambia impressing in midfield. Having moved ahead of Stéphane Sessegnon and Paul Lasne in Michel der Zakarian’s pecking order of late, the Niort loanee has added a dynamism that had been sorely lacking. Still just 21, Montpellier will be eager to tie him to a permanent deal, but may face stiff competition given how he has impressed of late.

3 | With Monaco dropping points, Lyon were unable to seize the opportunity to move into second, only drawing 1-all at home to Angers. Le SCO were good value for the draw, but the absence of Mariano Diaz was keenly felt as youngsters Myziane Maolida and Amine Gouiri are still too raw to affect a match the way the former Real Madrid man can. If Lyon had not been inclined towards doing business this January, their patent need for a striker may soon change that.

4 | PSG limply overcame a combative Nantes side 1-0 at the Stade de la Beaujoire on Sunday night through an Angel di Maria goal, but referee Tony Chapron stole the headlines. In a bizarre sequence of events, Nantes defender Diego Carlos inadvertently ran into the back of the official in the final minutes of play, knocking him over, only for Chapron to stick a leg out in retaliation in an attempt to trip the Brazilian up. He then followed that inexplicable act up by showing Carlos a second yellow card, for no apparent reason.

Results: Strasbourg 0-2 Guingamp, Rennes 0-3 Marseille, Caen 0-1 Lille, Dijon 1-1 Metz, Montpellier 0-0 Monaco, Nice 1-0 Amiens, Troyes 0-1 Bordeaux, St Étienne 2-0 Toulouse, Lyon 1-1 Angers, Nantes 0-1 PSG.

United Rugby Championship: Bulls confirm Springbok wing Sbu Nkosi has been missing for three weeks

Concerns are growing over the whereabouts of Bulls and Springboks flyer Sbu Nkosi, who has not been seen for three weeks, according to media reports in South Africa.

The 2019 Rugby World Cup winner has not reported for duty at the Pretoria-based franchise since November 14 and efforts to reach him have been fruitless.

A week prior to that, it was confirmed that Nkosi would miss the South Africa ‘A’ tour to Europe due to a rib injury sustained during the Bulls‘ United Rugby Championship (URC) victory over the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on October 30.

Since his disappearance, the Bulls and his family – particularly his mother – have been unable make contact with Nkosi.

He has now been reported missing to the police and the Bulls are hopeful he is found soon.

“All I can say is that we hope Sbu is at least keeping safe despite his seclusion,” Bulls chief executive Edgar Rathbone told News24 on Saturday morning.

A lot of concern

“We’ve been attempting tirelessly to make contact with him, but these efforts have been in vain to date. Everybody is really concerned.”

Nkosi, who has been struggling with injury issues over the past year, moved to the Bulls from the Sharks in May in a bid to revive his career under the guidance of director of rugby Jake White with whom he has a longstanding relationship.

However, he was sent home early from the Bulls’ URC tour to Europe for breaking protocols when he missed a team meeting, after receiving permission to visit a friend in Dublin.

On Friday, White was asked about Nkosi during his Bulls team announcement for Saturday’s home match against Cardiff, but declined to comment.

“The less I say at the moment, the better,” he said.

Nkosi made his Springbok debut against England in 2018 and has made 16 Test appearances so far, scoring nine tries.

Clément Grenier turns down Montréal Impact

Lyon central midfielder Clément Grenier has turned down an offer from former boss Remi Garde at MLS side Montréal Impact, according to France Football.

Grenier has been told by OL to find a new club, having been frozen out of first team proceedings completely since the start of the current campaign.

The Frenchman would like to remain in Europe, with contacts from Italy and Spain, and an interest from West Ham.

A member of the player’s entourage told RMC the following last night about Grenier’s situation: “There are another 10 days of this transfer window to go and everything remains possible with the aforementioned destinations.”

Rugby Championship: All Blacks bounce back with bonus-point victory over Los Pumas

New Zealand returned to the victory trail in the Rugby Championship after they sealed a 53-3 bonus-point triumph over Argentina in Hamilton on Saturday.

As the scoreline suggests, the All Blacks dominated proceedings for long periods and eventually scored seven tries, with Ethan de Groot, Caleb Clarke, Rieko Ioane, Jordie Barrett, Ardie Savea, Brodie Retallick and Beauden Barrett all crossing the whitewash.

Their other points came via four conversions and two penalties from Richie Mo’unga while Jordie Barrett also succeeded with a couple of conversions. For Argentina, Emiliano Boffelli slotted a penalty.

The match started with heavy rain pelting down but, despite the atrocious weather conditions, the All Blacks opted to keep the ball in hand and were rewarded for their attacking endeavour.

Argentina were on the back foot from the outset as from the kick off Tomas Lavanini knocked on and the All Blacks were soon on the attack inside Argentina’s 22. The visitors were penalised for straying offside on defence and Mo’unga made no mistake from the kicking tee.

New Zealand’s handling was outstanding in the wet weather and shortly afterwards De Groot crashed over for the opening try after gathering a well-timed pass from Aaron Smith. The All Blacks continued to dominate and midway through the half Clarke rounded off out wide after good work from Will Jordan, Jordie Barrett and Ioane in the build-up.

Argentina struggled to build momentum as they committed a plethora of handling errors but in the 32nd minute Boffelli scored their only points via a penalty after the All Blacks infringed on defence.

Despite that score, everything seemed to be going wrong for the visitors and they were reduced to 14 men in the 35th minute when Lavanini was yellow carded for not retreating 10 metres when making a tackle on Savea, who took a quick tap penalty inside Argentina’s 22.

Just before half-time, the All Blacks launched an attack from a scrum deep inside Argentina territory and Ioane cantered in under the posts after running onto a pass from David Havili.

Mo’unga added the extras which meant the hosts had their tails up with the score 24-3 in their favour at the interval.

The All Blacks had the better of the second half’s early exchanges and extended their lead when Mo’unga added another penalty in the 46th minute, after several Pumas were pinged for offside play. The visitors needed a response and they were soon camped inside New Zealand’s 22 but, despite hammering away at the home side’s try-line, they would not be rewarded.

In the 57th minute, Argentina launched a lineout drive on New Zealand’s five-metre line but the maul was halted illegally by Fletcher Newell, who was yellow carded for his indiscretion.

Strong All Blacks finish

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the All Blacks stayed true to their attacking roots and on the hour-mark Ioane made a superb line break before his progress was halted deep inside Argentina’s half. The ball was recycled quickly before full-back captain Sam Cane offloaded to full-back Barrett, who crossed for their fourth try.

New Zealand’s continued to dominate during the game’s latter stages and further tries from Savea and Retallick followed which meant they held a 46-3 lead.

The All Blacks did not take their foot off the pedal and their half century came up in injury time when Beauden Barrett went over for their seventh and final try after Savea launched an attack off the back of a scrum deep inside Argentina’s 22.

Hatem Ben Arfa: “I feel like I don’t exist at PSG.”

PSG attacking midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa has given an interview to French football magazine So Foot during which he discussed his situation at the current league leaders.

“What I am going through at PSG is very complicated, I feel like I don’t exist. You have to understand how to live like that. One day, my life as a footballer will stop, there will be more difficult hurdles to overcome, like illness. But to learn how to longer exist when you felt that you existed with what you did before, it is hard… This suffering, I am taking it as an apprenticeship for the theatre of society where all comes to an end one day.”

Iain Henderson: Ireland lock ‘devastated’ to miss creating history in New Zealand

Ireland second-row Iain Henderson revealed his disappointment not to be involved in his side’s historic tour of New Zealand in July.

Andy Farrell’s team became the first Northern Hemisphere side to win a Test series in New Zealand as they defeated the All Blacks 2-1, rocketing Ireland to the top of the world rankings.

Early injury

Henderson was set to play a role in the tour but suffered a knee injury early on and was sent back to Ireland, where he also underwent hand surgery whilst rehabbing his knee.

The second-row revealed that he was hugely proud of the team and that his favourite moment was the key try in the third Test.

“The Rob Herring try, at the end of that last game, was my probably favourite moment,” Henderson told SportsJOE.ie.

“I was devastated not to be involved, but it was class watching them doing it. I was there for a bit, at the start, and I saw what they wanted to do, and setting their stall out. It was really impressive. I was really disappointed not to be involved, but incredibly proud watching them, back home.”

URC awaits

Henderson shifts his attention to the beginning of the United Rugby Championship, where Ulster will be looking to improve their performance from last season after a late Manie Libbok conversion saw the Belfast side crash out in the semi-finals.

The 30-year-old is still in rehab but says his side is shaping up well in pre-season, and he is looking forward to them getting underway in the new campaign.

“I’ve been rehabbing from a couple of injuries this summer,” the Ulster captain said.

“So, slow and steady but we’re definitely getting there. From the touchline, where I’ve been doing my rehab, I’ve been watching to see how the rest of the team are getting on. They’re going great, performing really well and being put under some serious pressure from the coaches. Hopefully it will put us in good stead for the first game.”

Ulster begin their URC campaign against rivals Connacht at the Kingspan Stadium next weekend.

OGC Nice President Rivière: “We find it deplorable that Mario had to suffer another incidence of racism.”

Speaking on the club’s official website, OGC Nice President Jean-Pierre Rivière made a statement on alleged racist abuse that Mario Balotelli suffered at the weekend in Dijon.

“We have taken the time to consult with different parties before making a statement on the subject. We find it deplorable that Mario had to suffer another incidence of racism. It is inexcusable, and we must unfortunately remind ourselves that this is not the first time that he has suffered this since he came to our league. He has all our support. As the coach of Dijon, Olivier Dall’Oglio said, you are not safe from “one or two morons”. That is also our view, and Mario did not want to say anything after the match… We are all convinced of the same thing, racism has no place in a football stadium, or anywhere.”

Will Jordan: All Black claims Wallaby Marika Koroibete is the ‘benchmark’ for wings in Test rugby

All Blacks star Will Jordan praised Wallaby rival Marika Koroibete, claiming that he’s the “benchmark” for wings in the world at the moment.

Koroibete has been in scintillating form for the Wallabies in the Rugby Championship, whether with ball in hand or on defence.

Jordan says he looks forward to facing the monstrous wing again and expects a “real challenge” from the Fijian-born superstar when the two sides clash for the first Test of the 2022 Bledisloe Cup in Melbourne on Thursday.

Powerful wing

“I’ve matched up with Marika a few times over the years and he’s a pretty punishing ball-runner and certainly goes out with all guns blazing,” Jordan said.

“He’s probably been setting the benchmark for wingers over the last two or three years so it’s always exciting playing against him – it’s a real challenge.”

Jordan broke down the Wallabies‘ new look back three, seeing threats on the wings with Koroibete and Tom Wright while also expecting danger from Andrew Kellaway, who starts at full-back.

“You’ve got the power of Marika on the left and Tom Wright with his speed and footwork and Kellaway was pretty strong in the three Tests against us last year so it’s a good balance of different games styles; a pretty strong unit,” he said.

Schmidt’s influence

Newly-appointed attack coach Joe Schmidt has already made his mark on the All Blacks; as Jordan suggested, the coach has been important for the structures of the side.

A focal point for the wing has been finding a way to influence the game without the ball.

“Over the three months or so it’s been a little bit tough getting the ball out wide and I’ve had some great chats with Joe Schmidt in particular in the last couple of week about how we can influence the game a bit more when the ball’s not coming our way,” said Jordan.

“It’s about having as much impact and influence off the ball as on it and then when you do get the opportunity with ball in hand … I’m getting pretty excited, under the roof so hopefully a bit of running footy.”

The Rugby Championship is wide open, with one point separating the top and bottom, meaning that any of the four teams can walk away with the title after the final two rounds.

The Bledisloe Cup occupies the final two rounds for the All Blacks and Wallabies, while the Springbok play against Los Pumas twice.

PSG have chosen Thomas Tuchel – Le Parisien

Le Parisien cite German sources to affirm that there is a total agreement in place to bring in Thomas Tuchel as PSG’s new manager, despite the fact that nothing has yet been signed.

PSG’s owner, Emir Al-Thani, is alleged to have chosen Tuchel from a long list presented to him in a recent meeting. The French outlet claims that Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been courting him, but that the Ligue 1 champions-to-be will nab the former Dortmund boss, who speaks very good French.
