Two French Open players quarantined after positive COVID-19 tests

Two players who are competing in the French Open are in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19, CNN Reported.

Roland Garros organizers confirmed to CNN on Thursday that two male players competing in the doubles event have been removed and will eventually be replaced by a team on the alternate list.

Organizers said 2,446 COVID-19 tests have been performed on their players since the beginning of the tournament on May 24, according to CNN.

“This is the first occurrence in which the tournament organizers must remove players, in accordance with their health protocol,” Roland Garros organizers said in a statement. “As a reminder, the health of all tournament players and that of their teams is continuously monitored through very regular testing, and they live and train in socially-distanced ‘bubbles.”

This news comes after Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka withdrew from the tournament on Monday after organizers fined her $15,000 for not speaking with the media. She cited mental health issues for skipping her media duties and for withdrawing from the event.

The French Open, which was postponed due to the ongoing pandemic, was pushed back a week later to allow a limited number of fans to attend the event.

Federal judge to appoint special master to review materials seized from Giuliani

District Judge J. Paul Oetken ordered Giuliani and the Justice Department to confer and come up with recommendations for the court-appointed special master.

The ruling came in a court case brought by Giuliani challenging federal investigators’ search warrant.

In his decision Friday, Oetken, who was appointed to the federal district court in Manhattan by former President Obama, rejected Giuliani’s efforts to mount a legal challenge to the search warrant, as well as a previous one executed two years ago.

“Giuliani requests that the Court unseal the affidavits submitted in support of the 2019 and 2021 warrants so he can challenge their legality,” the judge wrote in a seven-page decision. “But he is not entitled to a preview of the Government’s evidence in an ongoing investigation before he has been charged with a crime.”

Oetken denied similar requests from Victoria Toensing, another attorney ensnared in the federal investigation. He said Giuliani and Toensing could mount any legal challenges to the basis of the search warrants if they end up facing criminal charges.

The judge said a special master would help alleviate concerns that prosecutors might interfere with the attorney-client privileges of Giuliani and Toensing.

“The Court agrees that the appointment of a special master is warranted here to ensure the perception of fairness,” Oetken wrote. “The special master will expeditiously conduct a filter review of the April 2021 warrant materials for potentially privileged documents, and that review can be informed by Giuliani’s and Toensing’s parallel review of the same materials.”

In that case a federal judge also appointed a special master following 2018 raids on Cohen’s office, home and hotel room. The special master, former federal judge Barbara Jones, concluded that relatively few of the seized documents were protected under attorney-client privilege.

The investigation is said to be focused on whether Giuliani violated federal lobbying laws by failing to disclose to authorities his work on behalf of foreign entities. The New York Times reported this week that prosecutors are also separately scrutinizing whether Ukrainian officials tried to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election by using Giuliani and others to sow disinformation in the U.S.

Giuliani’s attorney did not immediately respond when asked for comment on Friday, but the former New York City mayor has denied any wrongdoing and criticized the investigation as politically motivated.

“They are trying to frame me,” Giuliani said in a Fox News interview earlier this month. “They are trying to find something they can make into a crime, some technical violation, some mistake I made.”

“There is no way on earth that they could have anyone telling the truth that I was acting as a foreign agent,” he added, “nor do they have any evidence that I tried to influence the government on behalf of clients.”

FDA grants emergency use authorization to COVID-19 antibody drug

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted an emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 antibody drug made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

Sotrovimab, an investigational monoclonal antibody therapy, has been authorized for treating mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19, the FDA said in a statement.

The drug is not for patients who are hospitalized due to COVID-19 or those who require oxygen therapy.

GSK developed the drug with Vir Biotechnology.

The companies said in a separate statement that the treatment will be available for appropriate patients in the U.S. “in the coming weeks.” The companies further said they plan to file for full approval of the treatment “in the second half of 2021.”

GSK and Vir said the drug was shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization or death in high-risk adults by 85 percent in a trial of 868 patients.

The most common adverse events in the treatment group were rash and diarrhea, which were mild or moderate.

The company also said that data from lab studies shows that sotrovimab “maintains activity against all known circulating variants of concern,” though the clinical impact of the data is not yet known.

Monoclonal antibodies are lab-made proteins that mimic the immune system’s ability to fight off viruses.

Fauci calls on China to release medical records of Wuhan researchers

Anthony FauciAnthony Fauci Rand Paul calls planned Fauci book ‘science fiction’ White House embarks on push to vaccinate hard-to-reach Americans Fauci, Jill Biden to appear together on ‘Live with Kelly and Ryan’ next week MORE is calling on China to release medical records of researchers at a laboratory in Wuhan, China, that reportedly became sick with COVID-19-like symptoms prior to the pandemic.

In an interview with the Financial Times published Friday, Fauci said the records could help resolve the debate over the origins of the virus, particularly if it was the result of a laboratory leak.

“I would like to see the medical records of the three people who are reported to have got sick in 2019,” Fauci told the news outlet. “Did they really get sick, and if so, what did they get sick with?”

Fauci also called for the records of miners that got sick years ago after entering a cave. According to The Washington Post, six miners became sick with a viral-induced pneumonia after entering a bat cave.

The nation’s top infectious diseases expert said, “It is entirely conceivable that the origins of Sars-Cov-2 was in that cave and either started spreading naturally or went through the lab.”

The theory that COVID-19 may have leaked from a lab has gained new attention in recent weeks. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that several scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology became sick with flu-like symptoms in November 2019, before the pandemic spread.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence said late last month that the intelligence community isn’t exactly sure how the virus has transmitted but has “coalesced around two likely scenarios: either it emerged naturally from human contact with infected animals or it was a laboratory accident.”

But “while two elements of the IC [intelligence community] lean toward the former scenario and one leans more toward the latter — each with low or moderate confidence — the majority of elements within the IC do not believe there is sufficient information to assess one to be more likely than the other.”

DOJ adds four defendants to Oath Keepers conspiracy case

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has added four defendants to its conspiracy case against the Oath Keepers related to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, CNN reported on Sunday, citing a new indictment made public in D.C. District Court.

The new defendants were identified as Florida residents Joseph Hackett, Jason Dolan and William Isaacs. A fourth person’s name and alleged actions were redacted, CNN reports.

Former US Treasury official sentenced to six months in prison for leaking documents

Former senior Treasury official Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards on Thursday was sentenced to six months in prison for giving thousands of confidential reports related to special prosecutor Robert MuellerRobert (Bob) MuellerSenate Democrats urge Garland not to fight court order to release Trump obstruction memo Why a special counsel is guaranteed if Biden chooses Yates, Cuomo or Jones as AG Barr taps attorney investigating Russia probe origins as special counsel MORE’s Russian collusion investigation to multiple news outlets around the world.

Edwards, who worked for the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), was charged in 2018 with leaking confidential financial reports to media outlets like BuzzFeed News. Edwards’s actions were discovered when agents from the Treasury Inspector General’s office detected “a pattern” of unauthorized media disclosures beginning in October 2017.

U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Woods granted prosecutors’ request that Edwards be given the minimum sentence of six months, Politico reports. Edwards’s attorney, Stephanie Carvlin, had asked for a “time served” sentence, Politico notes, appearing to refer to the day Edwards spent in custody following her arrest in 2018.

“A meaningful sentence is needed in order to respond to the crime,” Woods said at the hearing, which had been delayed for about a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The judge ordered Edwards to report to prison on August 2.

Edwards pleaded guilty in 2020 to conspiring to violate the Bank Secrecy Act.

“I understand and accept that a lot of information was made available to the public. I do apologize for that, your honor,” Edwards said in a statement to the court, which Politico notes was largely unrepentant.

“The colossal, mammoth effect of this defendant’s crime is unparalleled in the history of FinCEN,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Ravener argued in court. “You have an individual who acted indiscriminately to disclose confidential government information.”

Politico reports that Edwards’s attorney asked Woods to consider the positive effects of her actions, pointing to legislation passed by Congress that requires companies to report their true ownership.

“I’m not saying Dr. Edwards deserves credit for that, judge,” Carvlin said. “If we’re going to look at the horribles that might flow from that, the bad, we should also look at the benefits that flow from what she did.”

Jason Leopold, the BuzzFeed News reporter Edwards had been in contact with, spoke out against her sentencing on Thursday.

“Natalie May Edwards is a brave whistleblower,” Leopold wrote, echoing an official statement from BuzzFeed News. “Thanks to her bravery, BuzzFeed News & @ICIJorg were able to publish the FinCEN Files, which revealed financial corruption on a global scale. We strongly condemn her sentence today.”

Leopold was present at the sentencing hearing, Politico notes.

BuzzFeed News spokesperson Matt Mittenthal also gave a statement to Politico denouncing Edwards’s sentencing.

“BuzzFeed News supports the actions of whistleblowers and strongly condemns today’s sentence of Ms. Edwards,” Mittenthal said.

EU, UK hit Facebook with new antitrust probes

The European Union and the United Kingdom on Friday hit Facebook with new antitrust probes over the platform’s use of data from advertisers.

The European Commission said in a statement that it was looking into whether Facebook violated competition rules by using data gathered from advertisers to compete with them in markets where Facebook is active — particularly classified ads.

The investigation is also probing whether the platform ties its “Facebook Marketplace” service to its social network in violation of  EU competition rules.

Separately, the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it will probe whether Facebook has gained an unfair advantage over competitors in services for online classified ads and online dating through how it gathers and uses data from digital advertising services.

Specifically, the CMA said it will probe whether Facebook unfairly used data gained from its single sign-on option Facebook Login to benefit Facebook Marketplace and its online dating platform Facebook Dating.

CMA said it will “seek to work closely” with the European Commission as the separate investigations develop.

Andrea Coscelli, Chief Executive of the CMA, said in a statement “Any such advantage can make it harder for competing firms to succeed, including new and smaller businesses, and may reduce customer choice.”

“We will be working closely with the European Commission as we each investigate these issues, as well as continuing our coordination with other agencies to tackle these global issues,” Coscelli said.

A Facebook spokesperson told CNBC, “We are always developing new and better services to meet evolving demand from people who use Facebook.”

“Marketplace and Dating offer people more choices and both products operate in a highly competitive environment with many large incumbents. We will continue to cooperate fully with the investigations to demonstrate that they are without merit,” the spokesperson said.
