The original copy of a photo that went viral in 2005 and became known as the “Disaster Girl” meme has been sold as a nonfungible token (NFT) for nearly $500,000.

Zoë Roth, the woman who as a child was captured in the photo smiling as a house burned in the background, sold the image at an online auction earlier this month.

Roth, who is now 21, sold the image to a user identified as @3FMusic for 180 Ether, a form of cryptocurrency. It was worth more than $430,000 at the time it was sold, MarketWatch reported, and as of Thursday it was worth the equivalent of more than $490,700.

As part of the sale, Roth and her father Dave Roth, who captured the image, maintain copyright of the photo and will also receive 10 percent of future sales, according to The New York Times. 

She plans to use the money she received from the sale to pay off her student loan debt and donate to charity, the Times reported.

Roth told the Times that the image was taken when she was age 4 and went with her family to watch as firefighters intentionally set a house ablaze in a controlled fire in her Mebane, N.C., neighborhood. She told the newspaper that her father asked her to smile, thus creating the image that the world knows as “Disaster Girl.” 

Roth’s father entered the photo into a 2007 contest and won, and the image has since gone on to be edited into various scenarios, including a meteor wiping out a dinosaur or the Titanic ship sinking after hitting an iceberg. 

Roth, who is now a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told the Times that she decided to sell the original photo as a way for her to take control over an image that has spread widely over social media for years.

She said in her interview with the Times that before deciding to auction her photo, she consulted with other people who have been captured in viral memes, including Kyle Craven, better known as “Bad Luck Brian,” a boy in a yearbook photo grimacing with braces, as well as the mother of “Success Kid,” a toddler on the beach with a clenched fist. 

Ben Lashes, who manages the Roths, “Success Kid” and the stars of other memes, said his clients in total have made more than $2 million in NFT sales, according to the Times. 

NFT sales have extended beyond memes to other mediums. Last month, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s first post on the social media platform was sold as an NFT for $2.9 million, which Dorsey at the time said he would convert into Bitcoin and donate to the charity GiveDirectly’s Africa Response.

Days later, a column by Times technology reporter Kevin Roose sold for more than half a million dollars in an online auction as an NFT, with the money planned to be donated to the Times’s Neediest Cases Fund.

Lawmakers on Wednesday grilled the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) inspector general following a preliminary report from a government watchdog painting a picture of a dysfunctional office charged with reviewing a number of national security agencies. 

The Wednesday report issued by the Government Accountability Office includes an eyebrow-raising 21 recommendations for DHS’s Office of Inspector General, a significant figure for an entity charged with its own watchdog responsibilities.

DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari’s appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee follows a report by The Washington Post Tuesday finding that Cuffari rejected a recommendation from his career staff to investigate the role the Secret Service played in clearing protestors from Lafayette Square last June.

GAO’s report found that DHS OIG did not follow professional standards when conducting its investigations and lacks a strategic plan and a number of formal structures for managing responsibilities.

GAO said DHS employees expressed concern about inaccurate information or facts in about 23 percent of reports issued by the inspector general’s office in fiscal year 2020.

“Our recommendations are not just intended to be improvement around the margin,” said Christopher Currie, director of the homeland security and justice team at GAO. “Collectively the OIG must treat these as a multi-year transformation effort.”

Lawmakers expressed dismay over the sheer number of recommendations facing DHS OIG, noting many of the problems predate Cuffari, a Trump appointee who was confirmed in 2019.

They also pointed to complaints from employees ranging from poor practices to holding back on investigations.

“Employees have alleged that failure to develop, implement, and adhere to management policies has resulted in decisions that are arbitrary, show favoritism or bias, hurt morale, and negatively affect operations,” Chair Bennie ThompsonBennie Gordon ThompsonLawmakers slam DHS watchdog following report calling for ‘multi-year transformation’ 10 Democrats join NAACP lawsuit against Trump Ambitious House lawmakers look for promotions MORE (D-Miss.) said during the hearing. “Inspectors general must not shy away from politically sensitive topics or allow political considerations to affect their work.”

Cuffari acknowledged a number of the issues facing his office.

“We have left behind a tumultuous five year period in the IG’s brief history and our ship is headed in the right direction,” he said.

But he also sought to push back on reporting from The Post in which sources said Cuffari suggested that the Secret Service’s own director evaluate the response in Lafayette Square, where agents used chemical irritants to disperse demonstrators protesting George Floyd’s death.

“Any suggestion … that I pulled punches on conducting robust oversight and Secret Service for political reasons is a complete falsehood,” Cuffari said.

He said he instead asked the Department of the Interior, which is investigating the U.S. Park Police response to the Lafayette Square incident, to examine the “small footprint” of Secret Service members involved in the response. 

Cuffari also faced questions from Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) and others about declining to weigh in on whether former DHS leaders Chad WolfChad WolfLawmakers slam DHS watchdog following report calling for ‘multi-year transformation’ Intel heads to resume worldwide threats hearing scrapped under Trump Sunday shows preview: Democrats eye passage of infrastructure bill; health experts warn of fourth coronavirus wave MORE and Ken Cuccinelli were properly serving in their roles. 

Cuffari declined a referral to investigate the matter, instead leaving the question to the courts. Judges later ruled each appointment did not comply with the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. 

“It’s inexplicable that OIG would decline a referral regarding the proper exercise of power at the highest echelons of DHS. If the OIG is not willing to investigate the abuse of power at the highest levels of DHS, then what is the inspector general for?” Torres asked.

Torres also criticized Cuffari for failing to recommend when DHS whistleblowers should be reinstated to their positions. DHS has had a number of employees step forward to reveal wrongdoing, ranging from exposing forced hysterectomies of those in Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody to alleging top leaders politicized intelligence.

“I think common sense dictates that DHS is more likely to reinstate if it is recommended explicitly by the inspector general,” Torres said.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who also spoke at the event, said he welcomed Biden’s leadership on tackling climate change, which he asserted is “making the world more dangerous.”

“It has a serious impact on our security, so it matters for NATO,” Stoltenberg said.

The Defense Department in just the past few years has seen its own fair share of climate change impacts on military installations – including heavy downpours, drought, rising temperature and sea level and repeated forest fires – which Austin listed off in his speech.

Among them was 2018’s Hurricane Michael, which “inflicted billions of dollars of damage at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida,” he said.

Severe flooding of the Missouri River in 2019, meanwhile, damaged Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., costing hundreds of millions of dollars to repair.

“The wildfires in California have threatened other military installations, forcing repeated evacuations. Typhoons in Guam most commonly occurred from June to December, but in February of 2019, Typhoon Wutip forced us to pause exercises with our Australian and Japanese allies,” Austin added.

The United States’s 18 intelligence agencies have since been tasked with creating a report aimed at the security implications of climate change, he noted.

Biden early in his presidency ushered in new policies to establish “climate considerations as an essential element of U.S. foreign policy and national security,” bucking Trump’s repeated assertions that climate change was a “hoax.”

As part of that, the Pentagon in January announced that it will now consider climate change when planning war games and will incorporate the issue into its future National Defense Strategy. 

The Defense Department in March also announced the creation of a working group to respond to Biden’s executive orders aimed at addressing the climate crisis.

Moves to tackle climate change can also be seen in Biden’s recently released $753 billion defense budget for next fiscal year, which said it would support “efforts to plan for and mitigate impacts of climate change” on Defense Department facilities and invest in “power and energy research and development.”

Alors qu’elle vient de fêter, le 15 octobre 2019, le premier anniversaire de son fils Arthur, fruit de ses amours avec son mari James Matthews, Pippa Middleton a mis à profit son expérience de jeune maman pour sa dernière chronique en date publiée dans Waitrose Weekend, le magazine édité par l’enseigne de supermarchés Waitrose. Si la plupart de ses aventures d’auteure ont tourné court, entre fiascos en librairies et contrats de chroniqueuse abrégés, la soeur de la duchesse de Cambridge continue de partager ses conseils et ses trouvailles avec les ménagères clientes de Waitrose.

Dans le dernier numéro de la revue, Pippa, 36 ans, ne dispense pas de nouveaux conseils de party planning ni de nouvelle recette de cuisine, mais elle aborde un sujet clivant : l’ostéopathie crânienne pour les bébés. Elle affirme ainsi y avoir eu recours pour Arthur et assure que, dans son cas, cela a été bénéfique. “Peu après la naissance d’Arthur l’an dernier, écrit-elle dans son article, j’ai entendu des mamans parler d’aller voir un ostéopathe crânien. C’est une thérapie alternative populaire pour les nouveau-nés, en particulier pour ceux qui ont vécu une naissance traumatisante, qui sont perturbés ou qui ont du mal à dormir. Cela consiste à guérir, détendre et favoriser le sommeil, la digestion et l’alignement du corps par le biais de manipulations douces de la tête et du corps.“

Elle poursuit, partageant sa propre expérience : “Bien que cela n’ait pas été prouvé scientifiquement, après avoir entendu des choses positives à ce sujet (et plus par curiosité qu’autre chose), j’ai emmené Arthur lorsqu’il avait 7 mois. J’ai été fascinée de voir à quel point cela a été apaisant pour lui, mais aussi à quel point cela a été riche en enseignements. L’ostéopathe a remarqué qu’un côté de sa nuque était plus tendu que l’autre, ce qui expliquait qu’il préfère dormir sur le côté. Elle a aussi vu que ses bras étaient plus forts que ses jambes, du coup elle m’a conseillé un exercice pour l’aider.”

The majority of the campaign contributions from Wall Street went to Democratic candidates, with Democrats taking 53% of the donations. More than $74 million was given to Biden’s campaign.

Newly elected Democratic Sens. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock of Georgia were among the senators who received a combined $300 million from Wall Street executives and employees. 

On Twitter, AFR said some of the biggest political spenders on Wall Street last year were Bloomberg LP, which poured $157.8 million into the elections; the National Association of Realtors, which spent more than $154 million; and Blackstone Group, which spent more than $49 million.

“Year in and year out, this torrent of money gives Wall Street an outsized role in how we are governed, while driving and protecting policies that help this industry’s super wealthy amass even greater fortunes at the expense of the rest of us,” said Donner.
