It was previously reported that Cody Rhodes was asked during a Q&A on Twitter over the weekend if Vince McMahon holds talents back that comes up from NXT. Cody Rhodes, who worked for WWE from 2006 until requesting his release in 2016, answered by saying that McMahon doesn’t hold talent back, and that some wrestlers become complacent after receiving their first live event check.
“He doesn’t hold anybody back,” Rhodes replied. “A lot of times it’s hard for fans to accept that some of their favorites have a ways to go or that they become lazy after they get that first LE check.”
Cody Rhodes even went as far as blaming himself for his Stardust character not evolving past mid-card status.
“Stardust for example didn’t go beyond tag gold cuz’ I wasn’t improving & I also got outta’ shape.” Rhodes replied.
Rhodes got some criticism from fans online who claimed that he was backtracking on his past comments, or that he was being political. When a Twitter user insinuated that he was backtracking on his previous comments for a possible WWE return, Rhodes replied:
“I’ve never said I was being held back. Never. The context of the question can change my answers. I’m sure sometimes I sound bitter or sometimes I sound humble. Fans who follow me get a more clear picture of who I am.
“You’re insane if you think I can do @ALL_IN_2018 and a return.”
Rhodes was more blunt when another user said that he was giving a political answer and that to say that Vince doesn’t hold people back is just flat out false.
“Don’t comment directly on my tweet as if I don’t see it,” Rhodes replied. “How’s my answer to a fan in a random Q/A remotely political? I have zero to gain. I worked there, you didn’t…you bought a ticket, not an education. Sit the f–k down.”
You can check out the exchange below:
I think it’s a great example of @CodyRhodes taking accountability for himself and his career trajectory which I commend him for. That said, it’s a political answer and not exactly grounded in reality. To say Vince doesn’t hold people back is just flat out false. https://t.co/YuwbGSjpkp

Angela Merkel saw off a rebellion on Monday as her Christian Democrat (CDU) party conference voted in favour of a new coalition government. But for once the veteran chancellor was overshadowed as her chosen successor emerged as the new darling of the party.
Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, popularly known as “mini-Merkel” was elected party chairman with a party record 98 per cent of the votes.
Her conference speech was given a rapturous reception by delegates, the applause louder and more enthusiastic than for Mrs Merkel, and it felt like the coronation of a party leader in waiting.
Mrs Merkel’s decision to promote the party’s next generation and bring them into her cabin in order to see off an incipient rebellion appeared to pay off.
As recently as a week ago there was growing discontent in the party over the concessions she made to secure a new coalition deal with the Social Democrats (SPD).
But on Monday there was so little opposition a simple show of hands was enough to secure the party’s agreement, with more than 97 per cent of delegates voting in favour.
Facing calls to renew the party, Mrs Merkel promoted several younger figures to the cabinet, including Jens Spahn, her biggest critic within the party, who she named as health minister.
But it was her decision to propose Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer as party chairman, widely seen as anointing the 55-year-old as her chosen successor, that appeared to sway delegates the most.
Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer stole the show with a passionate speech in which she vowed to take the fight to the nationalist Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which made severe inroads against the CDU in last year’s election.
“We live in a time that is restless and difficult as rarely before,” Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer told delegates. “More is at stake than just the question of how we feel as a party.”
The AfD has “nothing, nothing at all to do with the traditions of the CDU”, she said. “If you want a stable government, you have to have a stable political system, which is only possible with stable parties.
“But the losses spur us on. We would not be the CDU if we retreated to a vale of tears. We want to regain voters’ confidence. That’s why the coalition agreement we vote on today is also an answer to the election result.”
Mrs Merkel may have seen off the rebellion in her own party, but her fate is still in the balance. The coalition deal still has to be approved by the SPD in a postal vote of its full membership, with the results expected at the weekend.
WWE has announced a couple of additions to the card for this week’s episode of Raw.
After losing the NXT Women’s Championship at TakeOver: In Your House, Charlotte Flair will face Raw Women’s Champion Asuka in a non-title match on Monday night. Asuka vs. Charlotte is a rematch from last week, where it ended without a finish due to Nia Jax mocking Asuka and attacking her.
Asuka is defending her Raw Women’s Championship against Jax at Backlash next Sunday (June 14).
Io Shirai became NXT Women’s Champion by winning a triple threat match against Charlotte and Rhea Ripley at TakeOver: In Your House tonight. The finish of the match was Shirai pinning Ripley. Charlotte had Ripley locked in the Figure Eight at the end of the match, but Shirai hit Ripley with a moonsault from the top rope.
Tomorrow’s Raw will also feature an appearance by new Women’s Tag Team Champions Bayley & Sasha Banks. “Never short on proclamations, the double champion & The Boss are set to divulge an impending announcement on the red brand,” WWE.com wrote.
Bayley & Banks defeated Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross on SmackDown this past Friday to win the Women’s Tag Team titles. Bayley also holds the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Tomorrow’s Raw is the brand’s go-home show for Backlash. Also on the episode, Christian will host the Peep Show with Edge as his guest, there will be a VIP Lounge segment with MVP and Bobby Lashley, Rey Mysterio will appear, and The Street Profits and The Viking Raiders will compete in a decathlon.
A British-born street artist based in Los Angeles has unveiled a golden statue depicting a lifesize Harvey Weinstein in a satin bathrobe on a sofa, with only days to go until the Oscars.
Entitled “Casting Couch”, the golden statue was positioned near the Hollywood theatre where the Academy Awards will be held on Sunday night.
It depicts the disgraced film producer leering with an Oscar statue in his hand.
“I like my work to have multiple levels – the initial shock, and then something a bit more thought-provoking,” the artist, who goes by the name of Plastic Jesus, told The Telegraph.
“A year ago, people would have looked at that in awe, and thought it was a symbol of greatness.
“Now people are sitting on the couch and taking selfies, recoiling in horror at how grotesque it is.
“I think it also says something about Hollywood. Most come here chasing a dream, and would have loved to get alongside him. But now they realise it’s just gross.”
The artist came to Los Angeles in 2007, to work as a news photographer. Inspired and provoked by what he saw, he became a full-time street artist whose work is now on sale online and in galleries.
The Casting Couch statue followed the appearance in Los Angeles on Wednesday of billboards designed by street artist Sabo that accused the entertainment industry of staying silent about sexual misconduct.
Plastic Jesus said the Weinstein statue was a collaboration with the artist Joshua “Ginger” Monroe and took two months to produce. It was paid for by donations through their websites.
In previous years they depicted Kanye West as Jesus, and also produced an Oscars statue injecting heroin, in response to the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, with the caption “Hollywood’s best kept secret”.
Plastic Jesus and Ginger were also responsible for producing naked statues of Donald Trump that appeared in various US cities in 2016, before he was elected president. After the election, Plastic Jesus installed a series of signs around LA reading: “Lot reserved for future internment camp. Signed: Donald J. Trump”.
“I’m a guerrilla artist, so I just always go around hoping I don’t get caught,” he said.
The Weinstein statue was in his studio on Friday, and he is in talks with a gallery to put it on display, alongside his other Oscars-themed work.
Weinstein Sex scandal
More than 70 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, including rape. Weinstein has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone, but admitted to inappropriate conduct.
His wife is divorcing him, and he is facing a slew of lawsuits. Last year he was expelled from the Academy, and forced into rehab at a clinic in Arizona.
On Thursday, however, there was rare good news, as it emerged that the business had been saved from bankruptcy and bought by a former Obama administration official.
Maria Contreras-Sweet reached a deal to purchase assets of The Weinstein Company and said she will use a majority-female board to rebuild the Hollywood studio tarnished by sexual misconduct allegations.
Ms Contreras-Sweet, former small business administration chief, said she plans to launch a new company, save about 150 jobs, protect the small companies that are owed money, and create a victims’ compensation fund that will supplement existing insurance coverage for those who have been harmed.
“This next step represents the best possible pathway to support victims and protect employees,” she said.
The Weinstein Company’s board of directors confirmed it had reached a deal with Ms Contreras-Sweet and supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle.
The accusations against Weinstein triggered a flood of allegations of sexual impropriety by other celebrities that have rocked Hollywood and dominated this year’s awards season.
US President Donald Trump plans to offer Canada and Mexico a 30-day exemption from planned tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which could be extended based on progress in NAFTA talks, a White House official said on Wednesday night.
The move, first reported by the Washington Post, followed comments earlier in the day by a White House spokeswoman that the impending tariffs could exclude Canada, Mexico and a clutch of other countries "based on national security."
Trump was expected to sign a presidential proclamation to establish the tariffs during a ceremony on Thursday, but a White House official said later it could slide into Friday because documents had to be cleared through a legal process.
The president has faced mounting opposition to the tariffs from prominent congressional Republicans and business officials worried about their potential impact on the economy.
The tariffs would impose duties of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminium to counter cheap imports, especially from China, that the president says undermine US industry and jobs.
A senior US official said the measures would take effect about two weeks after Mr Trump signs the proclamation.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a regular media briefing on Wednesday: "We expect that the president will sign something by the end of the week and there are potential carve-outs for Mexico and Canada based on national security, and possibly other countries as well based on that process.
"It will be country by country, and it will be based on national security," she said.
Sanders said Trump was considering several candidates to fill Mr Cohn’s position, while Mr Navarro said he was not short-listed for the job.
China warns against trade war
In his first tweet on Wednesday, the Republican president showed no sign of backing away from the tariffs, saying the United States had lost more than 55,000 factories and 6 million manufacturing jobs and let its trade deficit soar since the 1989-1993 administration of President George H.W. Bush.
Later, his tweets turned to trade with China, demanding that Beijing lay out plans for reducing its trade surplus with the United States by $1 billion, which appeared to have been raised during a meeting with a top Chinese official last week.
"China has been asked to develop a plan for the year of a One Billion Dollar reduction in their massive Trade Deficit with the United States," Mr Trump tweeted, without saying where the message had been conveyed.
China ran a record goods trade surplus with the United States last year of $375.2 billion
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the country would take a necessary response in the event of a trade war with the United States, while warning that such a war would only harm all sides.
Mr Wang, speaking on the sidelines of an annual meeting of China’s parliament, said China and the United States did not have to be rivals, and history showed that trade wars were not the correct way to resolve problems.
"Especially given today’s globalisation, choosing a trade war is a mistaken prescription. The outcome will only be harmful," Wang said.
"China would have to make a justified and necessary response," he said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating an outbreak of salmonella across 23 states, with reports of hundreds of people being sickened.
The federal agency announced in a release on Friday an additional 87 illnesses, and eight new states had been affected since the last update on the matter Tuesday.
The statement added that as of July 23, a total of 212 people have been infected with the salmonella strain, and 38 of the infections stemmed from new states: Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Maine, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Virginia.

The agency noted that a specific source for the salmonella strain has not been identified, and there are currently no advisements against eating or consuming particular foods, nor are there any links to specific retailers that might be supplying contaminated goods.
Infected persons reported illnesses starting between June 19 and July 11. According to the CDC, Salmonella symptoms can take up to two to four weeks to show in patients.
Public health officials are interviewing patients to investigate the origin of the recent outbreak. Thirty-one patients have been hospitalized as a result of infections, and zero fatalities have been reported.
According to CDC state data, Oregon had the most cases of salmonella with 51 reported infections. Utah followed close behind with 40 reported cases.
The agency said symptoms of a salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. People sickened by the bacteria typically have symptoms six hours to six days after being exposed.
The CDC advises anyone who might be experiencing symptoms to call a health care provider and report what they ate a week before becoming ill.
In rare instances, salmonella infections can be fatal. People with weakened immune systems, children under the age of 5 and adults over 65 are more likely to have severe illness symptoms.
The Royal Rumble PPV Event is less than two weeks away and it is shaping up to be the biggest Royal Rumble Event in WWE History. The Royal Rumble Event is always main evented by the Men’s Royal Rumble Match and this year’s favorite has always been changing for the past few weeks. At first, John Cena and Roman Reigns had been alternating as the favorite to win the Men’s Royal Rumble match. However, the latest betting odds have Shinsuke Nakamura as the most likely to win the match.
After nearly a year of Roman Reigns being long favored to win the 2018 Men’s Royal Rumble Match, John Cena would be picked as the favorite, but that didn’t last very long either. This gives him a probability of over 40% to win this match.
As for John Cena, his odds have been knocked down to +400, while Dolph Ziggler has been upgraded to have the same odds as Cena.

Ever since leaving Impact Wrestling a few weeks ago, numerous reports have confirmed that Ethan Carter III is on his way to WWE. He was reportedly spotted at the Performance Center recently, then he was pulled from an independent event scheduled on the same day as the Royal Rumble event. As if that was not enough evidence, Squared Circle Sirens’ Casey Michael recently revealed that the NXT Twitter account just started following Carter. It is unclear if EC3 will begin working on the main roster or in NXT, but several different reports (including one from the Wrestling Observer) have stated that Carter will be officially announced as a WWE roster member very soon.

Before Anthem Sports & Entertainment took TNA Wrestling and renamed it Impact Wrestling, Dixie Carter served as the chairwoman of TNA for several years. Since her departure, she has appeared on Kurt Angle’s WWE 24 documentary on the WWE Network, but a fan in attendance for Ring of Honor’s ‘Music City Excellence’ tapings spotted her at the event. The fan claimed that ROH COO Joe Koff was showing Dixie around the area during the show. Dixie remains a minority stakeholder at the moment, so it is unlikely that she will be sticking around in ROH, but the meeting is still interesting due to rumors suggesting that Impact is currently working on building a relationship with Ring of Honor.
Even more interesting…I saw @ringofhonor’s Joe Koff showing @TNADixie around at tonight’s taping in #Nashville, explaining what they’re doing @davemeltzerWON @thewadekeller

One of the potentially biggest stories that could be taking place over the next few days is the relaunch of the XFL. Vince McMahon’s defunct football league could be on the way back as soon as January 25th, and he has launched his own Alpha Entertainment company in order to do so. Triple H was recently asked about his father in law bringing back the XFL during an interview with ABC News. Triple H commented on the matter by stating. “I don’t think there’s any sense of change. If anybody thinks they’re going to push him out or take this thing, there’s going to be a hell of a fight.” It will be interesting to see what happens with the XFL and what it means as far as McMahon continuing to run WWE is concerned.
Triple H recently announced on Twitter that he will be going live with Cathy Kelley for an interview after tonight’s NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia PPV. Below is the tweet sent out by Triple H announcing that he will go live after TakeOver:
