On last night’s episode of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver talked about WWE’s Crown Jewel again, spending considerably more time on WWE’s decision to run an event in Saudi Arabia than two weeks ago when it first incorporated it into a feature. This focus on WWE lasted five minutes. It covered these points:
Oliver said: “This story is horrendous, and businesses with ties to Saudi Arabia have now come in for greater scrutiny, including the WWE who you may remember signed a ten year deal to stage events there and who in April staged The Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah which was wall-t0-wall propaganda for the Saudi government. There was actually a clip for that event we did not have time to show you last time.”
Then they aired a clip of Titus O’Neal slipping and falling as he ran to the ring. Oliver said, “I don’t think there is any better incapsulation of WWE’s relationship with Saudi Arabia than a wrestler meeting Saudi Arabian princes before falling flat on his face.”
Oliver said WWE is facing “understandable pressure” to cancel Friday’s event “Crown Jewel.” He noted there are unconfirmed reports John Cena wants to pull out of the event. “Truth is, wrestling fans have long been uncomfortable with this Saudi deal.” He then aired a clip from Smackdown 1000 of fans chanting “Un-der-taker” and then booing him as soon as he mentioned Crown Jewel. Oliver said: “Holy sh–! I think the WWE itself just turned heel. Do you know how clearly deeply bad something has to be to get wrestling fans to boo a wrestling event at a wrestling event? That is the type of crowd reaction you’d expect to hear if the WWE Championship was suddenly won by Beck.”
RELATED: Afternoon Update: Rousey endorses Crown Jewel staying in Saudi Arabia, CNN covers WWE Crown Jewel decision
Oliver said despite the criticism, WWE is going full steam ahead with Crown Jewel in partnership with a country that, remember, just murdered and dismembered a journalist for the Washington Post.”
Oliver then criticized WWE for their “tone deaf” Instagram post of an urn with “DX” spray painted on it with the caption: “Respect is out the window at WWE Crown Jewel.”
Oliver said: “Look, it is not going to be easy for the WWE to thread the needs on this. They are pushing ahead on this event despite the serious concerns of some of their own wrestlers and own fanbase, but since they have picked a lane here, they might as well say ‘f— it’ and go ahead with the marketing like this.” Then they aired a spoof ad with a hyped up voice (right out of a monster truck event advertisement) that hyped Brock Lesnar, A.J. Styles, and Undertaker, but “no female wrestlers because they aren’t allowed to perform there and maybe John Cena, if he’s willing to take a major p.r. hit. Try to forget everything you see on the news that might make this hard to enjoy and instead watch the Brothers of Destruction leave their opponents dead and buried. Sorry poor choice of words. Someone is going to rest in pieces. Someone is going to be ambushed and mutiliated with a bone saw. You know what, never mind. At Crown Jewel, respect is out the window. And if you care about human rights, WWE has two words for you: Suck it!”

•Top Stories of the Week
ROH has made some significant signings this week, in both the management level of the company and the talent side.
PCO (Carl Ouellet) has reportedly signed an exclusive contract with ROH this week. PCO has enjoyed a career resurgence on the independent scene this past year. This may be seen as an upset by some that ROH was able to sign a notable independent talent, due to WWE’s recent monopoly on “Indie” talent recently.
ROH has also signed former WWE creative team member Kevin Eck to a full time position. Eck was a part of the creative team at WWE from 2011-2014. Eck’s position in the company has not been disclosed, but look at future creative decisions to see if Eck has any influence going forward.
ROH’s Biggest PPV of the year Final Battle is coming up next week. The card has remained the same since last week. As it has been greatly reported, this will most likely be the last ROH show featuring members of The Elite, sans Marty Scurll.

•ROH In The Media
There have not been a lot of media appearances by ROH talent in the recent weeks. The BTE crew had a follow up episode to the exorcism of Cody. This was another fun and light episode for the group.
With the soon-to-be lack of “Elite” talent, I wonder if PCO will take the mantle of internet darling. If you have not seen any of his videos on Youtube, I suggest you check it out.

•Closing Commentary
The past few weeks I have talked about the future of ROH. I would like to continue that theme here as well.
ROH signing talent like PCO shows that they are able to compete with other large brands in terms of free agent acquisitions. The storytelling of ROH has always been vanilla at best. The in-ring product has always been the main goal of the promotion. The BTE guys have flourished because of their creativity outside of the ring and ROH. Hopefully, ROH will take advantage of someone like PCO and have more layered storytelling.
Luchasaurus has also been added to the TV tapings after Final Battle. I can say that I am biased, but after seeing him perform live, I truly think that he could be an ROH World Champion. He has the size, in-ring ability, and natural charisma to make it to the top of the industry.
Overall, I like the direction ROH is going and that it’s not resting on its laurels. It shows that ROH will always be on the cutting edge of the industry. As a fan of the product, it is nice to be reminded of that every so often.
Tyler has been a wrestling fan for 20 years (a handful of years he was a lapsed fan – 2003-’08, mainly), He’s from Columbus, Ohio. Check him out on Twitter @ringoftyler and check out his podcast @tandbwrestling.

NJPW has been giving out contracts that extend beyond one year recently, but PWTorch has been unable to confirm how long of a deal Owens signed with the company. AJ Styles was back on WWE television tonight for the first time since the Royal Rumble.
Styles’ return furthered the build to both Super ShowDown and WrestleMania 36. He came to the ring with Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson and cut a promo asking what WrestleMania season would be like without him. Anderson said that — as far as he and Gallows are concerned — Styles is the new Mr. WrestleMania. Styles also called himself the greatest wrestler on any roster or of any era.
Styles was interrupted by Ricochet after talking about what’s next for him and mentioning potentially challenging the WWE Champion. Styles said he doesn’t care who it is — it could be Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntyre, Roman Reigns, Ricochet, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, Diesel, Sting, Hulk Hogan, or the entire nWo.
Styles told Ricochet that he was just being nice by mentioning his name. He said Ricochet doesn’t deserve a title shot and no one believes he’ll be WWE Champion. Ricochet challenged Styles to a match right then, but Anderson said he couldn’t allow Styles’ first match back on Raw to be against Ricochet. Ricochet then defeated Anderson.
After separating his shoulder in the men’s Royal Rumble last month, Styles will return to the ring in the Tuwaiq Trophy gauntlet match at Super ShowDown in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Thursday, February 27. Andrade, Rusev, Bobby Lashley, R-Truth, and Erick Rowan are the other wrestlers in the match.
Ricochet is challenging Lesnar for the WWE Championship at Super ShowDown. The winner will defend their title against McIntyre at WrestleMania 36.
Dave Meltzer confirmed last Friday that Styles vs. Undertaker is planned for WrestleMania 36.
Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida is hosting WrestleMania on April 5.

The following are some stand-out quotes from a Forbes article by Alfred Boima Konuwa III previewing the G1 Climax event in Dallas, Tex. tonight.
•Jay White on Rollins-Ospreay Feud: “It’s child’s play. It was ridiculous. Typical of Will Ospreay and [Seth Rollins] and every other wrestler today to run around on social media, and have some pillow fight on Twitter, and become too sensitive and care too much about other people’s opinions. Ridiculous.”
•Kevin Kelly on Seth Rollins-Will Ospreay Feud: “I just think they are as identical of people as I’ve ever known. I’ve called both of their matches. I know both of them personally. I like both of them. There are so many similarities between the two. When I was calling his matches in Ring of Honor, Seth Rollins was very much a company guy and was very proud to be Ring of Honor’s world champion and knew what that title represented and would fight anybody who spoke ill of the company or his place in it. And I think that when he hears enough about something and decides he wants to speak out on it, he’s going to speak out on it. And for Ospreay to stand up for himself the way he did, and to be as outspoken as he was, you could really see a lot of similarities between the two. I can’t say enough good things about Seth Rollins and Will Ospreay, they’re two remarkable athletes, great people and I just know if they get together and they had a cold beer and talked about it they would realize ‘we have a lot in common.’”
•Juice Robinson on new hairdo: “It’s just something I felt like I wanted to do. It was absolutely my call, nobody told me to do it. I’m still going to rock the wild, Randy Savage sunglasses and colorful ring gear but I felt like it was time to part ways with the old dreadlocks so that’s what I did.”
•Jay White on ‘Greedy’ and ‘Entitled’ American Fans: “American fans are so greedy. I love beating all their favorites because these fans are so entitled, and they go out of their way to try to make every show about them, and they make up chants just to make themselves the center of attention. I’ve made a name for myself all over the world, including the states, so I’m not worried about [building an American fanbase], I just want to beat all their favorites and take the G1.”
The article also includes comments about Juice Robinson’s influence and who Kevin Kelly thinks will pull the biggest upset of the tournament: FULL ARTICLE LINK
