Four Johnnies advance to day 2 of NCAA regional

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Four Saint John’s University wrestlers advanced to Saturday following the first day of the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional on Friday, Feb. 23, at Augsburg.

The final day of competition is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start Saturday at Augsburg’s Si Melby Hall.

All four wrestlers went 2-1 Friday. The regional’s top three placewinners at each weight advance to the NCAA Division III Championships March 9-10 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Junior Luke Dodd (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), who is ranked seventh nationally at 184 pounds by D3wrestle.com, won his first match of the tournament via major decision (15-2) but fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Jordan Newman, who is Division III’s top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, via fall in the quarterfinal. Dodd bounced back with an 8-3 decision in his first consolation bout and will face Augsburg’s Sebastian Larson in the consolation quarterfinal Saturday morning.

Sophomore Anthony Hennen (Cologne, Minn./Norwood-Young America) started his day at 141 pounds with a major-decision loss to No. 7 Jimmy McAuliffe of Elmhurst (Ill.), but bounced back with a pin and a major decision of his own. He will face Concordia-Moorhead’s Adam Presler in the consolation quarterfinal tomorrow.

Sophomore Dominic Skawiniak (Rogers, Minn.), like Hennen, lost his first match of the day at 197 pounds but bounced back with a pair of wins. He pinned St. Olaf’s Sebastian Hyta in his first consolation match and earned a thrilling 17-10 victory over Chicago’s Duncan Payne. Skawiniak was down 8-1 in the second period against Payne, but scored a reversal and picked up six back points. He chose down to start the third and added another takedown and four-point near fall for good measure. Skawiniak will face Wisconsin-Platteville’s Cody Meyer in the consolation quarterfinal.

Sophomore Quincy Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) answered an opening-round fall with two first-period pins of his own at heavyweight. He will take on St. Olaf’s Troy Beaman in the consolation quarterfinal.

Stephanie Won’t Confirm Plans For A Second WWE Evolution PPV

WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon was recently interviewed by The National in Abu Dhabi while she was there for the beginning of The 2019 Special Olympics World Games. During the interview, Stephanie McMahon was asked about a second WWE Evolution PPV Event possibly taking place. Stephanie would not confirm nor deny any possible plans for a future second All-Women’s PPV Event known as Evolution, as seen below:
“We haven’t announced any plans yet for Evolution but we have a lot of things in the works right now,” Stephanie said. “One thing that is important to note with Evolution that it was our first ever all-women’s streaming special pay per view is that it trended #1 world wide for two and a half hours during the last game of the World Series and during NFL Sunday Night Football. Both huge audiences in the United States but it was WWE Evolution that was trending No 1.”
It was previously reported that a second Evolution PPV is not scheduled for this year, per the latest update, but that could always change. After the first Evolution PPV took place back in 2018, there was a feeling backstage that they had to make it an annual thing. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter speculated that WWE may try to work with Saudi Arabian Officials to get The Female Superstars on one of the two events scheduled for The Kingdom this year, which could be a long shot. WWE is scheduled to run two shows in The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia this year – Friday, May 3rd & Friday, November 1st.
