Il en a de la chance, ce Frédéric Lopez. Il voyage souvent vers des pays merveilleux avec parfois de jolies filles aux yeux bandés. Pour son nouveau numéro de Rendez-Vous En Terre Inconnue, diffusé ce mardi 14 décembre à 20h35 sur France 2, c’est en effet Virginie Efira qui embarque pour finalement découvrir en plein vol sa destination : l’extrême Nord de la Mongolie. Le peuple Tsaatan l’y attend, au terme de quatre jours de voyage jusqu’à la région du Khövsgöl, tout près de la frontière russe.
« J’aime l’idée d’être projetée dans un milieu car confrontée à une rencontre, à un environnement, on peut en découvrir davantage sur soi. Y compris des choses désagréables, d’ailleurs »,n explique Virginie Efira. Et elle n’a pas été déçue. D’ailleurs, elle admet avoir réévalué « la trop haute opinion (qu’elle avait) de (s)a capacité d’adaptation! » Elle résume : »La difficulté à me défaire du quotidien. Comme le besoin, parfois, d’être seule. Mais aussi le fait de se laver ou d’aller aux toilettes avec plusieurs couches de vêtements. Et — histoire de ne pas montrer mon anatomie d’emblée à tout le monde —, de trouver un moment pour sortir de la tente, par moins 20 degrés, et voir les rennes débarquer… »
Mais elle est encore émue. Par « cette nuit à la belle étoile, entre feu et neige, entourés des rennes (…), plongée dans l’imaginaire de mon enfance. Le père Noël qui croise un chamane… Loin de tout, au coeur de la Taïga, j’avais 10 ans et demi ! Tous ces instants ont rendu le voyage féerique. Comme lorsque nous nous sommes retrouvés au pied de l’arbre sacré, cet arbre toujours vert, recouvert de petits rubans bleus, symboles des rêves, promesses et prières de chacun. La beauté et la magie de ces moments font, bien heureusement, que nous ne sommes pas toujours en prise avec notre petit confort et les températures ambiantes. »
Un décor réchauffé par l’humain, comme à chaque fois dans ce génial concept de Frédéric Lopez qui a trouvé un interlocuteur de choix pour Virginie Efira en la personne de Ganbat. « Tout est devenu simple, dès que j’ai vu Ganbat arriver à dos de renne. A sa manière de se tenir – dans une position très cool – on aurait dit qu’il allait faire du reggae dans la seconde ! Le charme a été immédiat. En plus d’avoir les yeux de
, Ganbat avait cette décence du rire. Il a d’emblée su rire de notre timidité mutuelle. J’adore quand le rire devient une forme de pudeur. » Et d’évoquer Gigit un petit garçon dont elle dit être tombée raide dingue! Elle en parlera certainement après la diffusion du film, sur le plateau de Retour de terre inconnue pour répondre en direct aux questions des téléspectateurs. Sympa, car c’est un bien joli guide, cette Virginie.
Elle a tourné la page. Séparée de son mari depuis plusieurs mois, elle peut enfin se consacrer entièrement à sa passion, la sculpture. Entretien exclusif avec une femme engagée devenue artiste, qui nous ouvre les portes de son atelier.

a eu l’idée de ce nom, il y a quelques années. Depuis, elle a donné à son existence une nouvelle orientation. Une artiste est née. Séparée de son époux depuis quelques mois, Marie-Laure vit dans son atelier de créatrice. Un cocon situé dans une coquette petite impasse parisienne. Dans son frigo quelques yaourts, mais surtout de la gélatine, de la colle de peau de lapin, des apprêts. Autant de matériaux qui lui servent à magnifier des cocos de mer – la plus grosse graine du monde qu’on ne trouve qu’aux Seychelles – pour lesquels Marie-Laure a eu un coup de foudre, lors d’un voyage dans les îles. L’artiste les éclaire et les «sacralise» en utilisant la technique de la «dorure à la détrempe». Elle se tourne également vers le bronze et le verre, à Murano.
A la demande d’Annick Le Ny, dans le cadre des manifestations «Cultures de Paix», elle expose 42 de ces «graines de vie», salle de l’Aubette à Strasbourg. Après avoir été immergée dans le maelström de la politique, Marie-Laure, apaisée, consacre désormais son existence à son art. «Je ne vois pas les heures défiler», confesse-t-elle, en passant et repassant la pierre d’agate sur ses sculptures pour faire briller l’or. Loin des dorures des palais de la République, à l’abri dans son antre d’artiste. Sa nouvelle vie est belle, en effet.
Gala : Comment est née chez vous cette envie de sculpture? Marie-Laure Viébel : Tout est parti du christ que vous voyez ici. Nous l’avions trouvé chez un antiquaire et il avait un bras cassé. Nous l’avons confié à un restaurateur qui l’a littéralement ressuscité. Je suis retourné voir cet artisan. «Est-ce que vous accepteriez que je vienne vous observer et apprendre le métier?», lui ai-je demandé. Cela a duré 12 ans. Entre-temps, mon mari est devenu ministre. Je prenais le métro pour me rendre au fin fond du 20e arrondissement et découvrir les techniques de dorure. Il y avait avec moi deux stagiaires en CAP. J’ai moi aussi décidé de m’inscrire pour passer le diplôme.
Gala : Epouse de ministre, mère de trois enfants, cela ne devait pas être forcément évident de vous consacrer à cette passion. Comment a réagi votre entourage? M.-L. V : Nous vivions à Matignon, deux de mes enfants passaient le bac et moi… je préparais mon CAP, ça les amusait. Mon mari savait que je tenais par-dessus tout à conserver une certaine forme de liberté. J’ai échoué d’un demi-point la première fois, l’ai repassé et réussi alors que ma fille Victoire entrait à HEC!

, Yan Pei-Ming … Nombre de vos amis sont des artistes. En tant qu’épouse de ministre, vous avez toujours veillé à faire une place à l’art et à la poésie dans un monde qui en manque souvent. M.-L. V : Au Quai d’Orsay, j’ai confié la réalisation de cartes de menus à des peintres comme Matta, Zao Wou-ki ou Pierre Soulages. J’ai aussi encouragé la restauration des fameuses «salles de bain du roi et de la reine», deux pièces art déco magnifiques. Lorsque nous recevions, je faisais toujours visiter ces endroits intimes, pour assouplir le côté rigide de ce genre de manifestations et créer une meilleure convivialité.
Gala : Vos vestes à message, signées Franck Sorbier, ont également beaucoup fait parler. Notamment celle que vous portiez, lorsque votre mari a quitté Matignon, sur laquelle on pouvait lire : «bye-bye, ciao, adiós»… M.-L. V : C’était une surprise pour mon mari ! Elle était cachée dans une housse noire, et avec la complicité d’un maître d’hôtel, je l’ai discrètement enfilée au dernier moment. C’était un clin d’œil. J’imaginais alors que nous allions avoir une autre vie et laisser la politique derrière nous.
Gala : Quelle incidence a eu la politique sur votre vie de couple? M.-L. V : C’est plus fort que tout. Dominique a cela en lui. L’engagement politique, c’est sa vie. Pour ma part, j’ai joué le jeu pendant des années et je veux tourner la page. Mais lui a décidé de continuer. Je prends donc un autre chemin. C’est douloureux pour tout le monde. Ce n’est pas un abandon, au moment où reprend l’affaire Clearstream, comme on a pu le dire dans la presse, car nous sommes déjà séparés depuis plusieurs mois.
Gala : Qu’est-ce qui est si difficile dans cette vie-là? M.-L. V : La solitude. A Matignon, combien de soirs seule devant mon plateau d’argent. Mais aussi combien de fous rires à l’office avec les intendants à regarder ensemble les « Guignols de l’info » ! La politique est un combat, et pour l’entourage, c’est dur. Il y a deux ans j’ai été présente le premier jour du procès Clearstream, puis j’ai eu besoin de me protéger. Je suis partie seule en Inde pendant un mois. Chaque soir, j’envoyais un mail à Dominique pour lui faire parvenir des ondes positives, un souffle différent. Je lui décrivais les lieux que je visitais sur fond de musique de Bach…
Gala : Malgré les aléas de la vie, l’art a toujours été très présent dans votre existence familiale. Vous êtes tous un petit peu artistes. M.-L. V : Ma fille aînée, Marie, est partie trois mois au Kazakhstan pour tenir le premier rôle dans un film sur Baiïkonur (la base de lancement des fusées spatiales, ndlr). Et je pense que Victoire est très douée pour le théâtre.
Gala : Dominique de Villepin est poète à ses heures… C’est ce qui vous a séduite, lorsque, étudiante en interprétariat, vous l’avez rencontré à 19 ans dans un autobus parisien? M.-L. V : Bien sûr. C’est quelqu’un de formidable. Quand je l’ai épousé, c’était un diplomate, et pas un politique. J’ai été trompée sur la marchandise! (Eclat de rire.) Ce qui m’a séduite, c’est son talent pour expliquer les grands problèmes du monde.
Gala : Vous avez toujours privilégié l’ombre à la lumière. Pourtant vous avez eu quelques engagements très forts, notamment dans la lutte contre le sida. M.-L. V : Je voulais être libre et garder un pied dans la vraie vie. C’est facile de rester dans l’ombre, il suffit de s’éloigner d’un pas pour ne pas apparaître dans le champ. Il y a toujours trois ou quatre personnes qui se bousculent pour être sur la photo! Lorsque mon fils Arthur est né, à Washington, il est resté pendant quelques jours entre la vie et la mort. Il a été transfusé, nous avons craint un temps qu’il ne soit séropositif. Ce ne fut pas le cas, et je me suis sentie redevable de cette grâce. J’ai donc participé en 2004 – contre l’avis de ma famille qui s’inquiétait pour moi – au protocole de recherche sur le vaccin du sida de l’Agence nationale de recherche contre le sida (ANRS), dirigée alors par le professeur Karatchine. Je devais m’engager à ne pas avoir d’enfant pendant deux ans. Faisant donc le deuil d’une dernière maternité. Je me suis dit alors : «Le quatrième enfant, ce sera moi!» Comme mes graines, je m’efforce de grandir…

Après avoir été subi une opération pour un cancer du colon, Hugo Chavez lance une opération… de communication. Le très fringuant président de la République du Vénézuela va bien et entend le faire savoir à son peuple. Dans une vidéo diffusée ce week-end, Hugo Chavez, qui fêtait le 28 juillet ses 57 ans, est en grande forme.
Un clip, qui se veut très moderne, où le président effectue quelques ronds de jambe entouré de son équipe. Sur fond de musique électro, on entend «uno, dos, tres, cuatro», répétés comme un refrain. L’homme fort du Vénézuela, érigé en superstar, reprend la maxime latine «mens sano en corpore sana» et la remixe à la sauce Chavez. Ce qui donne «Gobierno sano, cuerpo sano, mente sana, pueblo sano», «un gouvernement sain, un corps sain, un esprit sain, un peuple sain».
Grâce à cette diffusion plutôt surprenante, Hugo Chavez entend rassurer les Vénézuéliens qui auraient des doutes sur sa santé, et en particulier sur sa capacité à assurer un quatrième mandat. Les élections présidentielles sont en effet prévues en 2012. Le charismatique leader du Vénézuela est au pouvoir depuis 1999, et n’hésitera pas à briguer une nouvelle fois le fauteuil de président.
«Je n’ai pas songé un instant à me retirer de la présidence, a déclaré le Chef d’Etat candidat à sa propre succession, mon moral est imbattable, je suis dans le meilleur état d’esprit possible». Opéré du colon en juin à Cuba, tout juste sorti d’une «première phase» de chimiothérapie, Hugo Chavez s’est donc montré conquérant, comme à son habitude. Le conquistador du Vénézuela ne semble donc pas abattu pour un sou, c’est du moins ce qu’il essaie de nous faire croire. Allez Señor Chavez: uno, dos, tres, cuatro. «Cuatro»… mandats.
Commission at pains to downplay the significance of investigation
The European Commission announced today (12 November) that it would investigate whether Germany’s robust export sector and weak domestic demand are harming the European Union’s economy.
The decision will set the Commission on a collision course with the EU’s largest economy. Politicians in Germany have already reacted angrily to recent suggestions, most notably by the United States Treasury, that Germany is importing too little, hampering the EU’s economic recovery.
Germany’s trade surplus in 2013 is expected to exceed an EU threshold of 6% of gross domestic product, as it has done every year since 2007.
The Commission will examine perceived macroeconomic imbalances in 16 countries in all, including Germany, and publish its conclusions in Spring 2014. If the Commission finds that serious macroeconomic imbalances exist, it can issue country-specific recommendations. Member states that ignore these run the risk of being fined.
Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom – 13 of the 16 member states to be reviewed this year – were also reviewed last year. But the Commission opened new reviews into Germany, Luxembourg and Croatia.
Both Jose Manuel Barroso, the Commission’s president, and Olli Rehn, the European commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, sought to downplay the significance of opening an investigation into the German economy. Barroso stressed that an in-depth review was “almost automatic” and “unavoidable” in light of data relating, amongst other things, to its trade surplus – which reached a record high in September at €20.4 billion, according to the German national statistics office.
Rehn said that the Commission was “not criticising Germany’s external economic competitiveness” but needed to address the question of “whether this is efficient, even from the German perspective.” Rehn has previously argued that reducing Germany’s trade surplus would improve the country’s economic performance and welfare and reduce inequalities that have accumulated in recent years.
Yet Barroso also appeared to address a veiled threat to German critics of the move. “So far Germany has been the biggest winner of the internal market because of its specialisations, its strong industrial base and its technological advantage,” he said. “But there are other countries that have other specialisations, like in services, so it would be fair if Germany opens its service market.”
Campaigners say strategy is flawed as it does not contain hard targets.
Protecting woodland and making the wood-processing and paper industries more efficient are the main aims of a strategy on forests published today by the European Commission. But campaign groups have criticised the plan for not setting hard targets.
The strategy, spearheaded by Dacian Ciolos, the European commissioner for agriculture and rural development, takes forest management “out of the forest”, addressing the way that forests generate goods and services. “Forests are key ecosystems, as well as a source of wealth and jobs in rural areas, if they are managed in a proper way,” said Ciolos.
Forests are a key resource to the paper and pulp industry. The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) welcomed the strategy. “Credible forest certification schemes should be used as one important tool for turning the new Strategy into reality,” said Katarina Molin of ACE. “This generates a robust framework which the beverage carton industry is already using in its global traceability commitment”.
The European Union is home to 5% of the world’s forest area. After centuries of deforestation, the amount of forest area has been increasing in Europe over the past 60 years thanks to better management. While EU forested area has increased by 0.4% annually since 1990, forested area globally is declining.
However, the strategy was criticised by environmental groups, which said it would not promote the sustainable use of forests because it does not contain targets. “The strategy has no teeth,” said Ignacio de la Flor of campaign group FERN EU. “To have any effect member states must take it seriously and combine it with performance targets and an action plan.”
The question of whether or not to set targets has been the subject of internal wrangling within the Commission for several months.
The strategy is closely linked to an upcoming proposal to put limits on the use of biomass from forests for energy. That controversial proposal is stuck within the Commission as different department argue over whether it should take account of indirect land use change or the loss of forests as ‘carbon sinks’ that remove carbon from the air.
Lithuania’s presidency of the Council of Ministers just got complicated.
Lithuania’s six months in the European Union spotlight, as holder of the presidency of the Council of Ministers, has become a little hotter of late, with Russia creating a trade dispute that has variously been blamed on plans for next month’s Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius and on a Lithuanian case against Gazprom.
The Russian authorities last week banned certain Lithuanian dairy products and imposed protracted inspections of Lithuanian trucks at border entry-points.
The European Union’s response has so far been restrained because it does not want to inflame the dispute further, but the European Commission’s department for health and consumer policy has become involved. The head of the EU’s delegation in Moscow has also protested to the head of the Russian customs service that the intrusive inspections of Lithuanian trucks are discriminatory.
As luck or design would have it, the head of the EU’s delegation in Moscow is a Lithuanian. Vygaudas Ušackas, a former foreign minister, took up the post in September, having spent three years as the EU’s special envoy to Afghanistan. Disputes about Lithuanian milk products and trucks are only the beginning. Difficulties over visa restrictions (on both sides) are expected to increase in the run up to the Sochi Winter Olympics in February.
Ušackas has personal experience of such matters. He is the son of Lithuanians who were deported for five years to Siberia by the Soviet authorities. In 2006, Russia denied him a visa to visit Lithuanian graves in Siberia.
Two Wells Fargo directors have resigned three days before lawmakers were set to grill them over their conduct while leading the scandal-ridden company, the bank announced Monday morning.
Former Wells Fargo chair Elizabeth “Betsy” Duke and director James Quigley resigned from the bank’s board, effective Sunday, to “avoid distraction that could impede the bank’s future progress,” according to a statement from the two released by the bank released Monday.
“As the markets face increasing volatility, a strong Wells Fargo is needed now more than ever,” Duke and Quigley said in the statement.

“We believe that our decision will facilitate the bank’s and the new CEO’s ability to turn the page,” they continued.
Duke and Quigley were set to face questions from the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday after a report released by its Democratic members documented extensive missteps by senior Wells Fargo management.

Wells Fargo has been subject to intense federal scrutiny since 2016 after the bank opened and charged fees on millions of accounts for customers without their consent or sold through misleading practices. The bank also faced legal penalties and a $1 billion fine for failing to make promised adjustments to home and auto loan interest rates and forced customers to buy unnecessary insurance products.
The Fed, CFPB and OCC ordered Wells Fargo between 2016 and 2018 to make sweeping internal changes to prevent future sales scandals and improve oversight in order to escape unprecedented federal penalties and federal monitoring.
Democratic members of the Financial Services panel blasted Wells Fargo leadership, including Duke and Quigley, for repeatedly failing to comply with and take seriously the demands of federal bank regulators, citing emails between and among Wells officials and bank regulators.
Their report also blasts Duke for allowing Wells Fargo to repeatedly submit incomplete plans to bank regulators and dismissing urgent requests from regulators to meet and discuss the process.
Dow futures dropped around 1,000 points on Sunday as a decision by Saudi oil executives to cut prices looked ready to ignite a global price war on crude oil.
CNBC reported Sunday evening that futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average had dropped nearly 1,100 points, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 also reportedly looked ready to open with losses on Monday.
The New York Times reported Sunday that the price on Brent oil, considered a global benchmark for crude prices, dropped around 20 percent following Saudi Arabia’s move in what was reportedly the sharpest decline of that resource since 1991.

“If a true price war ensues, there will be plenty of pain in the oil markets,” Badr Jafar, president of Emirati oil company Crescent Petroleum told the Times. “Many will be bracing for the economic and geopolitical shocks of a low-price environment.”
Saudi Arabia’s price cut looked to be aimed at retaliating at Russian officials, who on Friday declined to join the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in agreeing to a worldwide reduction in oil production in response to the coronavirus outbreak, which has slowed the global demand for oil.
“Crude has become a bigger problem for markets than the coronavirus,” former JPMorgan analyst Adam Crisafulli told CNBC. “It will be virtually impossible for the [S&P 500] to sustainably bounce if Brent continues to crater.”
More than 109,000 confirmed cases of the novel form of coronavirus have been confirmed around the world, with the majority of deaths being reported in mainland China, where the virus is thought to have originated.
Leaders promise ‘significant’ increase in money to be made available for SMEs.
European Union leaders today promised to do more to help small businesses that are struggling because of the economic crisis.
Speaking after the summit, Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, said that the money available in the form of loans for SMEs would be increased “significantly”.
Leaders agreed that the additional funds should be available from the beginning of 2014 and come from the EU budget and from new initiatives between the Commission and the European Investment Bank.
Barroso said there are discrepancies in the EU when it comes to funding being given to small businesses. He said that 85% of requests for financing from German firms are accepted, but this figure drops to below 40% for firms in southern Europe.
Van Rompuy said that each extra euro made available by the EU should be leveraged to give five or six euros of extra loans to SMEs.
EU leaders also discussed efforts to give social considerations a greater role in EU economic policymaking. They welcomed a Commission initiative to introduce social criteria into the Commission’s monitoring of EU member states’ economic performance.
The leaders also discussed how to reinforce economic governance within the EU, including proposals to introduce “contracts” in which EU member states would receive financial assistance in return for reforming their economies.
Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, said that the other member states had accepted in principal to “contractual arrangements”.
Merkel said she wanted the next meeting of EU leaders, in December, to agree on introducing such contracts.
