DHS says no 'credible' threat to US, warns of groups' capability

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Saturday that it doesn’t have information about any “specific, credible threat” to the U.S. homeland, but warned that groups are capable of carrying out “operations” in the U.S.

The information in a DHS bulletin follows a recently announced U.S. strike that killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

“At this time we have no information indicating a specific, credible threat to the Homeland,” DHS said, but cautioned that “Iran and its partners, such as Hizballah, have demonstrated the intent and capability to conduct operations in the United States.”

The bulletin also warned that Iran is capable of “carrying out attacks with temporary disruptive effects against critical infrastructure in the United States” and “likely views terrorist activities as an option to deter or retaliate against its perceived adversaries.”

Warren announces support for new North American trade pact

Warren, a 2020 presidential candidate, told Boston CBS affiliate WBZ that she would vote to approve the pact despite her past opposition to free trade agreements. The Senate is expected to approve Trump’s proposal, called the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) as soon as this month.

Warren said Friday that the updated version of the USMCA “makes improvements” to the original NAFTA and Trump’s first proposal. The White House agreed to bolster labor law enforcement provisions, scrap protections for high-cost prescription drugs and tighten environmental standards to win the overwhelming support of House Democrats.

“Workers have had the legs taken out from underneath them and this agreement makes improvements,” Warren said Friday.

“It’s gonna help open up some markets for farmers, they need that stability,” she said. “It’s gonna help with enforceable labor standards and that’s gonna be useful.”

Warren is among the Democratic Party’s most ardent critics of free trade agreements, which she blames for the outsourcing of U.S. manufacturing jobs and exploitation of workers. The senator has also proposed using trade policy to create stronger safeguards for labor, the environment and regions of the U.S. struggling to adjust to globalization.

While Warren opposed Trump’s initial USMCA proposal, she joined a slew of trade hawks and labor unions to endorse an updated version following talks between the White House and House Democrats. Several of her 2020 primary competitors have also voiced support for USMCA, including former Vice President Joe BidenJoe BidenNYT to fight White House’s withholdment of emails about Ukraine aid freeze Krystal Ball: ‘Doesn’t hold up’ to say Castro failed to gain traction due to race Warren announces support for new North American trade pact MORE and Sen. Texas judge rules that hospital can remove baby from life support

A Texas judge ruled Thursday that a Fort Worth hospital can remove an 11-month-old baby from life support, though the child’s mother reportedly plans to appeal the decision.

Judge Sandee Bryan Marion of the Tarrant County district court sided with Cook Children’s Medical Center that Tinslee Lewis’s life-sustaining treatments should end after doctors said the infant is in pain and will not get better, The Associated Press reported.

Texas Right to Life has advocated for Trinity Lewis, Tinslee’s mother, as she sought a temporary injunction. The group, which opposes abortion, said she will appeal the judge’s decision.

“I feel frustrated because anyone in that courtroom would want more time just like I do if Tinslee were their baby,” Lewis said in a statement. “I hope that we can keep fighting through an appeal to protect Tinslee. She deserves the right to live.”

The hospital had planned to take Tinslee off life support on Nov. 10, after enforcing Texas’s “10-day rule” that allows providers to stop treatment if the hospital’s ethics committee agrees with the doctors that care should cease, even if the family disagrees. Treatment can be ended after 10 days if a new provider can’t be found to take on the patient.

Cook Children’s Medical Center officials said they contacted more than 20 facilities as potential new providers, but all of them declined.

“Today’s decision from Chief Justice Sandee B. Marion restores the ability of the Cook Children’s medical staff to make the most compassionate and medically appropriate decisions for Tinslee as she struggles in pain to survive each day,” the hospital said in a statement. “This is an emotional and difficult situation for everyone involved, especially for this family who had high hopes that Tinslee would get better.”

Tinslee was born prematurely and hasn’t left the hospital. She has a heart defect, chronic lung disease and severe chronic high blood pressure. She has used a ventilator since July and needs respiratory and cardiac support, deep sedation and medical paralyzation.

Both sides agreed that the hospital would wait at least seven days until discontinuing life support in order to give Trinity Lewis enough time to file an appeal and a motion for emergency relief.

Trump says Iranian commander was killed to 'stop a war'

President TrumpDonald John Trump Trump asks New York judge to dismiss rape allegation case NYT to fight White House’s withholdment of emails about Ukraine aid freeze Gabbard blasts Iran strike: ‘Trump’s actions are an act of war’ MORE on Friday defended his order to kill Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, saying he authorized the strike in Iraq “to stop a war” and that the top Iranian commander should have been targeted and killed “long ago.”

“What the United States did yesterday should have been done long ago. A lot of lives would have been saved,” Trump said in a brief address from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla. “We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war.”

“Soleimani was plotting imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel, but we caught him in the act and terminated him,” the president added, describing the action as a “flawless, precision strike.”

Trump’s statement, which lasted a few minutes and concluded without him taking questions, represented his first public remarks on the strike late Thursday. The address appeared to have been quickly scheduled, as it was not previously announced by the White House.

The Pentagon confirmed Thursday night that Trump ordered a strike against Soleimani, who commanded Iran’s Quds Force, describing it as a defensive operation meant to deter future Iranian attacks that the top general was actively planning.

Officials say Soleimani has been responsible for the death of hundreds of U.S. troops in the Middle East over the years.

Trump emphasized Friday that his administration does not “seek regime change” in Iran but he called on Tehran to stop its destabilizing activity in the region, including its use of proxies across the Middle East.

“I have deep respect for the Iranian people. They are a remarkable people with an incredible heritage and unlimited potential. We do not seek regime change; however the Iranian regime’s aggression in the region, including the use of proxy fighters to destabilize its neighbors, must end and it must end now.”

Trump also appeared to threaten further action if Iran targets Americans around the globe in retaliation for the strike on Soleimani.

“The United States has the best military, by far, anywhere in the world. We have the best intelligence in the world,” Trump said. “If Americans anywhere are threatened, we have all of those targets already fully identified and I am ready and prepared to take whatever action is necessary.”

“That in particular refers to Iran,” the president added.

Trump’s decision to authorize the strike represents a major escalation in the administration’s confrontation with Tehran and it has triggered concerns from critics about destabilizing consequences.

Democrats have accused Trump of not seeking proper approval from Congress for the strike, while Republicans have largely rallied around the move.

Iran swiftly vowed a harsh response for the killing of the top military leader, though it remains unclear what shape such an action will take or when it will occur.

Trump spoke to reporters Friday afternoon before departing for a campaign event with evangelical supporters in Miami.
