Tuesday’s attack on a U.S. military base in Iraq quickly sent shock waves through the Capitol, where lawmakers were scrambling to learn the details and formulate a response.

But even in the earliest stages of the breaking story, Democrats were in agreement on at least one element of the attack: It was not a surprise.

“I think there was not surprise in the room,” Hoyer said. “No one ought to be surprised that if you attack a significant figure in another country — not in that country, but in Iraq, attacking Iranians” — that the other country would retaliate with force.

According to a statement issued by the the Pentagon, Iran launched more than a dozen missiles Tuesday evening targeting “at least” two Iraqi military bases where U.S. troops and their allies were present. No casualties were immediately reported.

The attacks appear to be in response to last Trump’s decision last Thursday to launch a drone attack in Baghdad that killed Iranian commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani, Tehran’s top security commander and a popular figure across Iran.

Yet Democrats are wary of that argument, criticizing the president for not informing congressional leaders of either the Soleimani plan or a strategy to deflect any blowback from Iran.

Pelosi, roughly two hours after the latest missile strikes, blamed both Trump and Tehran for the heightened frictions.

“We must ensure the safety of our servicemembers, including ending needless provocations from the Administration and demanding that Iran cease its violence,” Pelosi tweeted. “America & world cannot afford war.”

Other Democrats went further, suggesting that Trump’s strike on Soleimani made the retaliatory attack certain.

“I think everyone knows when the attack occurred to expect some kind of unfortunate response. And we’ve always said that this does not enhance our national security; it doesn’t protect our troops; it doesn’t protect American citizens,” Lee said. “It’s a spiral now.”

Hoyer was quick to condemn Soleimani and the violence he promoted.  

“Nobody laments the loss of Soleimani. He was a vicious terrorist, had caused a lot of loss of life, including Americans,” Hoyer said.

“But we ought not to be surprised when you do that that there is a response,” he added. “And whether or not there was thought, or whether or not there was a plan — a strategic plan — for how we’re going to handle this, the bellicose threats that the president makes are not useful or hopeful to bringing some stability and peace.”

A New York woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday for attempting a terrorist attack and planning to build a bomb, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). 

Prosecutors said Asia Siddiqui was “inspired by radical Islam” when she planned to build a bomb and use it in a terrorist attack against law enforcement and military targets. 

Siddiqui and her co-defendant Noelle Velntzas pleaded guilty in August to a charge of teaching or distributing information pertaining to the making and use of an explosive, destructive device or weapon of mass destruction in furtherance of a planned federal crime of violence, DOJ said in a statement. Velentzas is awaiting sentencing.

“With the sentence imposed by the court, Siddiqui has been held accountable for her crimes,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers “Inspired by radical Islam, Siddiqui and her co-defendant researched and taught each other how to construct bombs to be used on American soil against law enforcement and military targets.”

Between 2013 and 2015, Siddiqui and Velentzas taught each other chemistry and electrical skills related to creating explosives and conducted research on how to make plastic explosives and to build car bombs, according to DOJ. 

Officials said Siddiqui and Velentzas discussed using devices like those from past terrorist attacks in the U.S. such as the Boston Marathon bombing, the Oklahoma City bombing and 1993 World Trade Center attack. 

Law enforcement officers seized propane gas tanks, soldering tools, car bomb instructions, jihadist literature, machetes and several knives at their residences when arresting the women, according to the DOJ release.

Zuckerberg wrote that he set new goals at the beginning of each year of the 2010s, though he admits that his life “was almost all about building the Facebook website.” Now a husband and a father, Zuckerberg, 35, asserts that for the 2020s he wants to have “a longer term focus.”

“Rather than having year-to-year challenges, I’ve tried to think about what I hope the world and my life will look in 2030 so I can make sure I’m focusing on those things,” the billionaire noted.

Adding a component to Facebook that creates a more private platform for users is something that Zuckerberg has talked about before, and he reiterates it again in his post.

Additionally, the CEO discusses the potential for new computing platforms that utilize augmented reality and Facebook’s dedication to being a platform that will allow small business access to “the same technology that previously only big companies have had.”

Running parallel to Zuckerberg’s personal post, Facebook announced Thursday that it wouldn’t be making any major changes to its controversial political advertising policy ahead of this year’s elections. The company has taken heat from Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups for allowing politicians to run ads that contain false and misleading information.

“Ultimately, we don’t think decisions about political ads should be made by private companies, which is why we are arguing for regulation that would apply across the industry,” Facebook’s director of product management, Rob Leathern, wrote in a blog post.

Zuckerberg echoed Leathern, saying, “There are a number of areas where I believe governments establishing clearer rules would be helpful, including around elections, harmful content, privacy, and data portability.”

“I’ve called for new regulation in these areas and over the next decade I hope we get clearer rules for the internet.”

He also mentions the company’s new “Oversight Board,” which will allow users to “appeal content decisions you disagree with to an independent board that will have the final decision in whether something is allowed,” adding that “if this is successful, it could be a model for other online communities in the future.”

Tottenham have had a roller coaster of a season so far, with Jose Mourinho replacing Mauricio Pochettino as manager – and things have taken a worse with striker Harry Kane set for yet another extended spell on the sidelines.

The club’s leading Premier League goalscorer with 11 strikes limped off the pitch in the loss to Southampton on New Year’s Day with a hamstring injury.

Initial reports suggested he would be out of action until March, but the situation worsened when the club confirmed that Kane would need surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his hamstring, with his new return date set for April. 

He is due to miss up to 14 games in all competition over the next three months, including a home fixture against Premier League frontrunners Liverpool, a clash against Manchester City as well as crucial Champions League last-16 tests against RB Leipzig.

The forward previously missed a large chunk of the second half of last season with an ankle injury.

Adding to Kane’s worries are the finals of the European Championship this summer, where he is expected to captain the Three Lions in the tournament should he be fit – and he faces a race against time to return to full fitness.

The Premier League season wraps up on May 17, with the European competition due to start less than a month later.

The North London club currently sit in seventh place and have endured an underwhelming first half of the campaign, failing to capitalise on the momentum of finishing as Champions League runners-up.

“Following ongoing assessment by our medical staff over the past week, we can confirm that Harry Kane will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring,” Tottenham said in a statement.

“The striker suffered the injury during our Premier League fixture against Southampton last week and specialists have advised surgery after further review of the injury.

“The decision to undergo surgery is not expected to impact the timeframe that the England captain will be sidelined, with the expectation that he will return to training in April.”

Mourinho could be forced to dip into the January transfer window in search for striker reinforcements in Kane’s absence, despite previously stating that he has no mind to do major business before the summer.

Should he return to training in April, he could be back to face Everton at home on April 11.

Ténor du barreau, l’avocat Eric Dupond-Moretti trouve parfois le temps de regarder la télévision. Interrogé sur ses goûts, le juriste n’ a pu s’empêcher de critiquer vivement l’Amour est dans le pré.

Son temps libre, le célèbre avocat Eric Dupond-Moretti préfère généralement le passer dans la nature, avec ses amis, autour d’une table bien garnie ou dans une forêt, pour une petite partie de chasse. Lorsque l’on plaide à Paris, il est cependant de plus en plus difficile d’accéder à un lieu paisible. Il arrive donc parfois au juriste de passer une courte partie de son temps libre devant l’écran de sa télévision. Lors d’une interview confiée récemment au magazine Le Point, l’avocat s’est vu demander quels étaient les programmes qui pouvaient l’intéresser. En retour, Eric Dupond-Moretti a fait savoir ce qu’il pensait de l’un d’entre eux: L’amour est dans le pré.

Franc du collier, comme à son habitude, le ténor des barreaux s’est attaqué à l’émission phare de la chaîne M6. L’un des aspects qui rebutent le plus le célèbre avocat est le fait d’offrir les déceptions amoureuses de certains candidats en spectacle à des millions de téléspectateurs. « Il y en a une qui va se faire jeter, pleurer et se faire humilier en public, commente-t-il, et là c’est le pic de l’audience. C’est une drôle d’époque… ». Que Karine Le Marchand ne prenne pas ces critiques personnellement, aux yeux d’Eric Dupond-Moretti, une grande partie du contenu audiovisuel français est actuellement « une catastrophe ».

Alan Thicke, le père du chanteur Robin Thicke, acteur canadien de renommée est décédé. Il a été victime d’une crise cardiaque lors une partie de hockey sur glace alors qu’il était en compagnie de son fils cadet, dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi.

Le Los Angeles Times le confirme : le père du chanteur Robin Thicke est décédé dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi suite à une crise cardiaque, au centre médical Providence Saint Joseph en Californie. La soirée avait pourtant bien débuté car le père de famille s’était lancé dans une partie de hockey avec son fils cadet, Carter, âgé de 19 ans.

L’homme était connu pour avoir interprété de nombreux rôles à la télévision, notamment dans la série télévisée américaine Growing Pains, ou Quoi de neuf docteur ? en France, entre 1985 et 1992. À cette époque Alan Thicke y jouait le rôle du psychiatre au côté de Joanna Kerns. L’acteur est aussi connu pour ses apparitions dans How I Met Your Mother ainsi que dans La fête à la maison. Très dynamique, le comédien a également reçu trois Emmy Awards au cours de sa carrière, principalement pour son implication au sein de divers talk-show, comme America 2 Night, dans les années 1970.

Alors que Robin Thicke exprimait sa tristesse via son compte Instagram écrivant « Le meilleur ami que j’aie pu avoir. Merci pour tout cet amour », Ben Stiller, le héros de La Nuit au musée a aussi soutenu la famille dans l’épreuve et remercié le disparu de lui avait offert son premier job d’assistant réalisateur sur son émission Thicke of the night en 1983. Le cliché de Geneviève de Fontenay laissant à penser qu’elle dînait avec Florian Philippot, vice-président du FN, pendant l’élection de Miss France, a fait le tour du web. Les circonstances de cette photo n’étaient pourtant pas tout à fait celles que le bras droit de Marine Le Pen a laissé croire…

L’image, publiée par Florian Philippot, avait de quoi faire jaser. Geneviève de Fontenay, ancienne présidente du comité Miss France, aurait passé la soirée de l’élection, samedi, avec lui, bras droit de Marine Le Pen, et quelques-amis, dans une brasserie typiquement parisienne. Le raccourci était alors facile pour celui qui découvrait le cliché : la dame au chapeau, qui a pris part à la Manif pour tous, nous signifiait là quel camp politique elle avait choisi. Et, comme une provocation, elle le faisait alors même qu’à Montpellier, « son » élection avait lieu. La réalité serait pourtant différente.

Jointe par téléphone, Geneviève de Fontenay ne décolère pas. La photo, postée hier, a en fait été prise au cours d’un déjeuner organisé il y a un mois. « J’ai été invitée à déjeuner un morceau et à échanger avec Florian Philippot, dont je ne partage pas les idées. Je l’ai fait de la même manière avec Arlette Laguiller. Mon but était d’avoir une discussion, sans parti pris », nous a-t-elle expliqué. Se sachant immortalisée, Madame de Fontenay avait interdit au vice-président du FN d’utiliser ce cliché à des fins politiques. Et pour cause. Elle ne compte absolument pas donner sa voix au parti d’extrême droite lors des prochaines élections présidentielles. « Je ne voterai jamais FN, assène-t-elle avant d’ajouter : ou alors, il faudrait vraiment que je sois prise d’Alzheimer ».

A l’approche de Noël, Ingrid Chauvin a offert un très beau cadeau à ses fans. Très discrète sur sa vie privée, l’actrice a récemment publié un cliché très mignon de son bébé Tom, désormais âgé de 7 mois.

Ingrid Chauvin vient de poster un nouveau cliché de son petit Tom, né le 10 juin dernier. Alors qu’elle prend toujours soin de ne pas trop en montrer, pour protéger son intimité, l’actrice a décidé, pour la première fois, de dévoiler le visage de son fils sur son compte Instagram. Sur cette photo, accompagnée de la légende « Mon amour de bébé », on découvre que le petit garçon à la chevelure blonde, a hérité des magnifiques yeux marrons de sa maman. Plus épanouie que jamais, cette dernière s’apprête d’ailleurs à fêter son premier Noël avec lui et redécouvre avec bonheur les joies de la maternité, deux ans après le décès de son premier enfant, Jade, alors âgée de 5 mois.

Plus épanouie que jamais, Ingrid Chauvin voit la naissance de Tom comme une bénédiction. « C’est un bébé très éveillé, curieux et joyeux. Il nous comble de bonheur. Dès sa naissance, Tom a été un bébé rassurant, extrêmement paisible, serein et détendu. Malgré tout, il m’était difficile de le lâcher du regard, ne serait-ce que quelques secondes », confiait-elle cet été à Paris Match. Maman gaga, elle ne peut d’ailleurs plus s’en séparer et n’hésite pas à l’emmener en tournage pour garder un œil sur lui.

George Michael est mort le jour de Noël à l’âge de 53 ans. Entre succès fulgurants et unes de la presse à scandale, la vie de l’ex-chanteur de WHAM! fut digne d’une saga hollywoodienne. En 1998, le chanteur est interpelé pour attentat à la pudeur dans des toilettes publiques et contraint à faire son coming-out. De cette situation embarrassante, il tire une chanson et surtout un clip plein d’humour que personne n’a oublié.

Icône pop des années 80, mondialement célèbre avec le groupe WHAM! puis poursuivant avec brio sa carrière solo, la vie privé de George Michael est pourtant longtemps restée un mystère. Affichant dans ses clips et sur scène des tenues extravagantes, en mini short ou jeans moulants, dès le début sa carrière la presse britannique ne tarde pas à évoquer l’homosexualité supposée du chanteur. Il déclarait à ce sujet à Paris Match en 1988 : « Je pense que ces interrogations n’ont pas lieu d’être, que c’est une violation de l’intimité. C’est pour cela que je ne confirme ni ne démens aucune rumeur concernant ma vie privée. » Il maintiendra cette ligne de conduite pendant des années, éludant les questions insistantes des journalistes et brouillant les pistes.

En 1991, il rencontre à Rio le designer Anselmo Feleppa avec qui il va vivre une grande histoire d’amour. Atteint du sida, celui-ci meurt deux ans plus tard, laissant l’interprète de Wake me up désemparé. En 1996, il lui dédie son album Older et surtout la chanson Jesus to a child, balade déchirante sur le deuil écrite à l’automne 1994. C’est à cette époque que le chanteur va finalement parler de son homosexualité à ses parents. Très proche de sa mère, il avouera des années plus tard dans un entretien au journal Le Monde ne pas avoir voulu l’inquiéter en lui révélant son homosexualité : « Vers l’âge de 19 ans, j’ai failli faire mon coming-out, mais la peur d’inquiéter ma mère, alors que nous étions au cœur des années sida, m’a empêché de le faire. » Elle meurt d’un cancer en 1996. Très affecté par ces pertes successives, George Michael va entamer une lente descente aux enfers, entre consommation excessive de drogues et d’alcool.

Le 7 avril 1998, un homme suit le chanteur dans un jardin public de Beverly-Hills et le drague. Alors que la situation prend un tour explicite, l’homme sort son insigne de policier. Il est arrêté pour « comportement obscène » et ce scandale sexuel le contraint contraint à révéler qu’il est gay. Un coming-out imposé dans des circonstances humiliantes que le chanteur va pourtant assumer à la télévision et alors que les médias lui somment de s’expliquer. Il regrette ce qu’il désigne comme « un acte stupide et inconscient » mais va enfin vivre son homosexualité au grand jour. Le 19 octobre, George Michael sort une chanson intitulée Outside dans laquelle il revient ouvertement, et avec un humour décapant, sur ces évènements. Dans le clip, pour le moins explicite, des toilettes se transforment en discothèque et George Michael se lance dans un numéro de danse déguisé en policier. S’il sait faire preuve d’auto-dérision pour transformer une situation embarrassante en véritable tube, George vit mal ce coming-out qui lui échappe : « Pour une raison étrange, ma vie de gay ne s’est pas améliorée après être sorti du placard. C’était même l’inverse. » Il partagera pendant près de 13 ans la vie de Kenny Goss, un homme d’affaires texan avant que le couple ne se sépare en 2009. Des rumeurs faisaient état ces dernières semaines d’une possible réconciliation entre les deux hommes alors que George Michael était toujours officiellement lié à Fadi Fawaz, un coiffeur australien. Aucun des deux hommes ne s’est pour le moment exprimé sur la mort du chanteur.
