FIA sheds new light on Alonso’s 305kph crash

Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, has revealed new details about Fernando Alonso’s heavy crash at the Australian Grand Prix, with the McLaren-Honda star walking away from “three high-G decelerations”.

The Spaniard was hunting down Esteban Gutierrez on the run to Turn 3 in Melbourne when he clipped the rear of the Mexican’s Haas VF-16 at high-speed, which catapulted Alonso into the wall and then a series of scary rolls in the gravel trap.

Alonso emerged from the accident seemingly unhurt, though the double world champion had to miss the following race in Bahrain after it was revealed that he had suffered fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.

In a bid to further improve driver’s protection, the FIA called for the implementation of new safety measurement systems ahead of the current campaign.

According to Article 21.2 of the 2016 F1 sporting regulations, “each driver must wear in-ear accelerometers which have been manufactured by the FIA designated supplier to a specification determined by the FIA”, while “each car must be fitted with an FIA accident data” as well as a high-speed camera pointing at the driver’s head.

In the latest issue of AUTO magazine, the ruling body provides a thorough analysis of what Alonso went through during his Albert Park shunt. The report says that his MP4-31 was “travelling at 313kph as he began his overtaking manoeuvre and had slowed marginally to 305kph at the point of impact.”

The accident is then divided into three main phases, each of which resulting in a high-g impact for the driver:

  1. When the car made contact with the wall (peak lateral deceleration of 45G)
  2. When it became airborne for 0.9s after hitting the gravel and rotated 540 degrees (lateral deceleration of 46G)
  3. When it landed on the ground (a peak longitudinal acceleration of 20G)

The high-speed camera pointing at Alonso’s head “showed that [his] helmet made contact with the left inside face of the headrest twice during the impact, corresponding with two peaks seen on the ear accelerometer data.”

In its report of the accident, the Global Institute for Motor Sport Safety reached the following conclusion: “From an initial 305kph impact, the car of Alonso was able to manage three high-G decelerations and an airborne phase without major injury to the driver, primarily due to a range of safety systems on the car performing well for their designed purpose.”

In its relentless pursuit of safety improvements, the FIA is already looking at ways to secure more insight into what a driver experiences during a crash with a focus on biometrics (“heart rate, body heat and sweat levels”) next on the agenda.

“I hope that we will be able to put something on a driver before the end of the season, at least in a test,” said Global Institute’s General Manager Research Laurent Mekies.

“Biometric data will help us to assess the driver’s conditions before, at the time of the crash and after the crash, as far as the rescue operations are concerned.

“You could imagine a million things tomorrow – you could imagine us trying to estimate the loads on the actual upper body of the drivers through the safety belts, for instance.

“It is something that will never stop as much as safety research will never stop and we will continue to push the boundaries to gain a deeper understanding.”

New tyre rules produced thrilling race – Lowe

Mercedes technical director Paddy Lowe has highlighted the availability of a third tyre choice as the main factor in Sunday’s thrilling Australian GP.

This season, teams are awarded a choice of three different compounds at each race while only two choices were on offer last year.

In Melbourne, teams and drivers chose a diversity of strategies, with eight drivers using all three available compounds – mediums, softs and supersofts – in the race.

“Having three compounds in the race, which was a change we promoted from the middle of last year as being something that would add uncertainty and excitement to the race, I think we’ve seen that play out really well,” Lowe told Fox Sports.

“You’ve got somebody on an old medium, and someone else on a brand new supersoft. It’s fantastic. And we’ve also pushed the spectacle of qualifying up, because we’re effectively a compound softer for qualifying.

“As we saw on Saturday we were 2.5 seconds quicker, some of that’s development, some of that’s the tyre.”

Lowe also explained that Mercedes experience of Pirelli’s medium compound, which the team used to great success in the second part of Sunday’s race, was an unintended consequence of pre-season testing.

“It was simply mileage. We had a target to do 6000 kilometers, on a medium you can get about 100 kilometers, on a soft you get about 30 kilometers.

“With the fixed quota we were given, we had to take all mediums, apart from four sets of softs and three sets of wets.

“We’d rather have had more tyres from Pirelli, and then we would have added a lot more softs into the mix.

Mercedes actually ran the supersoft rubber on its W07 for the first time in last Saturday’s free practice session.

“We first ran the supersoft in FP3. That’s the first-ever run of it on this car. The times weren’t startling, but they picked up when we got into qualifying.”

'I did not deserve ugly Luis Enrique criticism' – Moreno feels 'personally attacked' by Spain boss

Luis Enrique publicly criticised Robert Moreno this week and the former La Roja coach has now issued a defiant response

Former Spain coach Robert Moreno has insisted Luis Enrique’s “ugly” claims that he was “disloyal” and “ambitious” are unfair.

Moreno served as Luis Enrique’s assistant for the national team until the latter stepped down in June to care for his young daughter, Xana, who died in August following a battle with bone cancer.

The former became coach at that point and oversaw Spain’s qualification for Euro 2020 before he was informed Luis Enrique would be coming back as head coach.

Moreno was not appointed to Luis Enrique’s staff a second time following an apparent fallout, as the former Barcelona boss questioned his former deputy’s motives.

But the departed coach hit back as the feud continued on Thursday, suggesting he was always “faithful” to Luis Enrique.

Moreno also pointed out an alternative replacement when Luis Enrique initially departed would not have been so accommodating in granting him a return.

“I don’t want to go into reproaches, but I have been personally attacked and labelled with something that I am not,” he told a news conference. “In this puzzle, my pieces are missing.

“Nine years ago, I started working with Luis Enrique. We have always followed him, being faithful, until he reached the national team.

“Nobody knew for how long he would be out, but what we all did know was, if there was a possibility for him to return to the national team, our staff would have to stay.

“So, I stepped up and took charge of the team. If I had not done so, now Luis Enrique would not be coach of the national team. It would be another coach.”

Moreno said he was left “in a state of shock for a week” after learning Luis Enrique did not intend to make him assistant again.

He added: “To this date, I honestly don’t know why Luis Enrique doesn’t want me to be with him. I don’t know as he was not clear in his news conference.

“He labelled me with two adjectives [“disloyal” and “ambitious”] that are very ugly and that I don’t deserve. I have proved over the whole time I worked with him that I am not like that.

“The years will pass and I will still not know. He could not explain it – or I could not understand it according to what my people have told me, as I did not watch the news conference myself.”

Preferring to look forward, Moreno reiterated his desire to continue a career as a head coach despite a testing first high-profile experience.

“I have just started,” he said. “I am really excited to be back on the pitch, to handle training sessions, to manage a team, to make decisions, to attend news conferences. I’m really looking forward to it.

“It has always been my passion to become a head coach. I am someone who started from the very bottom but was able to reach the top level.”

No action taken after Alonso/Gutierrez crash

The Albert Park stewards have decided that neither Fernando Alonso nor Esteban Gutierrez should be penalised after the pair had a massive collision in the Australian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was hunting down the Mexican on the run to Turn 3 when the McLaren hit the rear left of the Haas and ended up in a series of scary rolls in the gravel trap. Alonso quickly scrambled out of the wreckage unscathed, as Gutierrez ran toward him to enquire about his condition.

Though it appeared that the Haas slighted drifted left in the braking zone, Alonso quickly dismissed the idea that Gutierrez was at fault and even said he might even have been “too late” himself. After investigating the crash, the stewards ruled out against taking any further action.

A statement read: “The stewards examined the evidence and conclude that no driver was wholly or predominately to blame.”

Hamilton prefers fully closed cockpit over devices

Lewis Hamilton would prefer a fully closed cockpit rather than the current solutions being trialled for implementation in 2017.

Following the debut of the Halo device on the Ferrari during pre-season testing, Red Bull will run its own cockpit protection solution during FP1 at the Russian Grand Prix. Having seen both devices, Hamilton says he would prefer either a fully closed cockpit or no additional protection at all.

“I don’t really have too many thoughts on it, I like the way it is,” Hamilton said. “When I get in my car I know that there is a danger, that’s been the same since I started when I was eight years old and that’s the risk that I am willing to take and that’s the risk that every single driver who has ever been in the car has been willing to take.

“It has come along so far over the years which is amazing, we haven’t really seen many deaths and I mean, if they are going to do this, close the cockpit like a fighter jet.

“If you are going to do it close the cockpit like a fighter jet, don’t half-arse it. That [Red Bull] screen looks like something from a … I mean jeez, it looks so bad. It looks like a bloody shield from the policeman, the riot shields, it’s like a bloody riot shield.”

While praising the FIA’s push for safety, Hamilton believes the danger of open cockpit racing is one of the attractions of the sport which make the drivers stand out.

“You’ve got this cool, elegant, futuristic Formula One car and you’ve got a crappy riot shield sat on top of it, and the other one, the carbon fibre structure was obviously good but obviously Fernando [Alonso] wouldn’t have been able to get out of the car potentially in his crash in Melbourne.

“But on top of that it is a good thing to see that people are, the FIA do take safety seriously. It is a constant thing that always needs to be worked on but as long as it doesn’t affect the aesthetics and the style and the coolness of Formula One, because the reason you look as a kid, you look at Formula One [and think] ‘wow, these guys, they are crazy, they could die at any moment.’

“Everyone who comes to me who has just started watching Formula One is like ‘ah it’s so dangerous’ and that’s a large part of why they are so in awe of what you do. You take away all that and that person could do it almost.”

Beyond Politics: Internet Praises Bonhomie Between ‘Rivals’ Shashi Tharoor & Nirmala Sitharaman

Politicians of different parties rarely get along with each other, at least on camera. Political bickering is a norm these days given the election season. Congress leader and candidate Shashi Tharoor was injured on Monday during a religious ritual at a temple in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. A day later, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman paid a visit to the Congress leader and this gesture proves there is life beyond politics.

Touched by the gesture, Tharoor posted the image of the defence minister greeting him in the hospital.

“Touched by the gesture of @nsitharaman, who dropped by today morning to visit me in the hospital, amid her hectic electioneering in Kerala. Civility is a rare virtue in Indian politics – great to see her practice it by example!(sic),” wrote Shashi Tharoor.

Verstappen: The plan was always to stay at Red Bull

Following his fast-track promotion to Red Bull, Max Verstappen says his plan was always to stay with the energy drinks giant, despite rival teams trying to secure the services of the Dutch phenom for the 2017 F1 season.

Verstappen was confirmed as Daniil Kvyat’s replacement at Milton Keynes on Thursday in a shock swap that sent the Russian back to Toro Rosso.

According to several reports, Mercedes and Ferrari had approached Red Bull to enquire about the 18-year-old potentially becoming a free agent next year. But Verstappen reveals he did not have any intention to leave the company that made him the youngest F1 driver in history.

“To be honest, I was always very happy at Red Bull,” Verstappen said during a factory visit to have his RB12 seat fitted ahead of next weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. “I never saw reason to change and of course with this opportunity there is no reason to change so I’m happy to be here.”

The teenager also took the opportunity to thank his father Jos Verstappen, who drove in F1 from 1994 to 2003, for supporting him ever since he began his racing career. Asked how he reacted to his Red Bull graduation, Verstappen Jnr replied:

“He was very proud to be honest. He was very happy because he invested a lot of time also in me when I was younger.

“We started together in go-karting. He was helping me out a lot and I learnt a lot from him. For sure, if he had not helped me, I will not be standing there today.”
