The pair will form part of a 33-man panel who will judge the game’s outstanding up-and-coming young player

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will form part of a panel that will vote on a new award added to the Ballon d’Or family this year: the Trophee Kopa.

The announcement for the new award came on Monday prior to the FIFA Best awards, where Real Madrid’s Luka Modric was awarded best male player.

Alongside the new under-21 award there will be a Ballon d’Or equivalent for female players.

This prize has been welcomed by France international Wendy Renard, who plays for Lyon and is a Champions League winner.

“The birth of the Ballon d’Or Feminin is a step further for the evolution of our sport,” she told France Football. “It’s a step forward. Women’s football is evolving and inequality is shrinking, even if there is still room for improvement.”

Meanwhile, Marta, one of the most recognisable female players of the last decade, added: “I’ve always wanted to see a woman win this prestigious award. It’s a step forward towards quality to see such a prize.”

Named after Raymond Kopa, the legendary Reims, Angers, Real Madrid and France striker, who won the inaugural Ballon d’Or in 1958, the award will go to the game’s outstanding young player aged under 21.

Ronaldo and Messi form part of the 33-man panel which includes all the surviving Ballon d’Or winners, from Luis Suarez, the oldest winner still alive, to the Juventus and Barcelona stars, who have monopolised the individual award for a decade.

It will be a panel of journalists specialising in women’s football around the world who will vote on the winner, using the same system that is in place for the men’s game.

A longlist of 30 players will be available for the award on October 8, the same day as the male Ballon d’Or candidates are made known.

Marta, who was named the FIFA women’s player of the year for the sixth time on Monday, is favourite to secure the female Ballon d’Or award. Other frontrunner’s include Lyon pair Ada Hegerberg and Dzsenifer Marozsan.

The Kopa Trophy will be presented on December 3, along with the Ballon d’Or awards for both male and female players.

The frontrunners for this year’s Ballon d’Or includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and FIFA’s 2018 best male player Luka Modric. After impressive performances at the World Cup and helping France win the title Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann are also in contention for the award.

Billie Eilish: ‘All I Can Say Is, Be Patient’

“The thing that’s worked,” Billie Eilish says, “is to just make what I wanted to make and expect nothing.”

Of course, making what she’s wanted to make has delivered far more than that: When Eilish took the stage at the ACL Music Festival in Austin on Oct. 5, she towered over a crowd that seemed impossibly vast. Untold tens of thousands of fans stretched beyond any given sightline as the 17-year-old whipped up a crowd already reeling from the 95-degree heat.

A few hours earlier, Eilish sat at a much smaller spot — the Bonus Tracks stage, which ACL added this year as a low-key place to record live interviews for podcasts such as this one — for a conversation about her life and career. The crowd, though scaled down and situated in a shady oasis next to a wine bar, was no less fervent. Some had watched her brother Finneas perform his own set across a field a few minutes earlier, but many more had hunkered down for hours to secure a prime spot.

Eilish’s career began in earnest when she released “ocean eyes,” a moody bit of synth-pop written by Finneas — whom she calls “the most talented songwriter I’ve ever met in my life” — via SoundCloud in 2016. The singer was 14 at the time. That song led to an EP (2017’s Don’t Smile at Me), followed by this year’s millions-selling debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?Combined, Eilish’s songs have been streamed roughly 17 billion times, while “bad guy” finally topped the Billboard Hot 100 in August after a record-setting nine-week run at No. 2.

Of course, that nine-week run coincided with the record-setting 17-week streak achieved by Lil Nas X’s eternal “Old Town Road.” For her part, Eilish insists she wasn’t following the charts.

“I didn’t give a f***,” she says. “I didn’t even know. Like, I didn’t even know. Like, bro. And then paparazzi followed me around the airport, like, ‘How do you feel that Lil Nas is No. 1 and you’re No. 2?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t give a f***! Let him live! Damn!’ Like, why can’t he have a No. 1, you know what I mean?”

In this interview for All Songs Considered, Eilish talks about getting through her teenaged years, directing her own videos, prepping for a world tour, experiencing art with synesthesia and much more.

Special thanks to KUTX for coordinating and recording this conversation.

Ukraine's president discussed Trump pressure weeks before July call: reports

Zelensky advisers Andriy Yermak and Andriy Bogdan were in attendance, as well as an executive for the Ukrainian state-owned natural gas company and American Amos Hochstein, a former diplomat and energy expert, according to CNN.

The meeting occurred roughly two weeks after Zelensky and Trump spoke with each other for the first time. That call revolved around working together to “root out corruption,” according to a White House readout of the conversation. The president has said that the White House would release a transcript of the call, though one has yet to be made public.

A rough transcript of another call on July 25 showed Trump repeatedly lobbied Zelensky to open an investigation into corruption allegations against the former vice president and his son. No evidence of criminal wrongdoing by either Biden has emerged.

Trump’s dealings with Zelensky are at the heart of the House’s impeachment investigation, with Democrats claiming that the president tied $400 million in military aid to Ukraine to Zelensky’s compliance with his requests.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing, calling the July call with Zelensky “perfect,” and rejected allegations that the halted military aid was tied to his request.

However, William Taylor, who serves as the chargé d’affaires for Ukraine, testified Tuesday that he believed Trump withheld roughly $400 million in financial aid until he secured a commitment from Ukrainian officials that they would launch probes into the Bidens and 2016 election meddling.

“During our call on September 8, Ambassador Sondland tried to explain to me that President Trump is a businessman. 'Mourinho's defensive methods to blame for Sanchez's poor form'

Former Chile U20 coach Jose Sulantay feels the out-of-sorts forward should be concerned at how things are going for him at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho’s “defensive game” is to blame for Alexis Sanchez’s poor form and the Chilean should be concerned at how things are going, says former Chile youth national team manager Jose Sulantay.

The 29-year-old was a marquee signing for the Red Devils during the January transfer window, with interest fended off from arch-rivals Manchester City to secure his signature.

The former Barcelona and Arsenal star has, however, struggled to produce his best since arriving at Old Trafford, netting just three times in 22 appearances.

He is yet to open his account for the current campaign, with United relying on others to see them through a slow start to the season.

Sulantay, who previously worked with Sanchez within the Chile U20 set-up, feels Mourinho must be considered responsible for failing to bring the best out of a man who has starred elsewhere.

He told El Mercurio ahead of United’s opening European fixture of the season against Young Boys on Wednesday: “Of course, the Champions League is an extra motivational factor for any footballer.

“But Alexis’ present, I don’t know if it will be fixed just because a great league comes along. I notice him being unbalanced and quite negative.

“It will be hard for him to return to his great level if he continues like this.

“And well, there’s little help from Jose Mourinho’s defensive game, which is based on long balls, skipping the sector where he plays.

“That should worry him. Hopefully the picture improves.”

Sanchez managed 80 goals in 166 appearances during his time at Arsenal, while 141 outings for Barcelona delivered 47 efforts.

United need him to rediscover that spark if they are to compete on multiple fronts this season.

Romelu Lukaku has remained their go-to man for attacking inspiration in 2018-19, but the Belgian striker needs somebody else to help carry the load and Mourinho must find an answer to that poser.

Hart ready if England come calling – Dyche

The goalkeeper’s future with the Three Lions remains up in the air after missing the World Cup, but the Burnley believes he is ready if called upon

Burnley manager Sean Dyche believes Joe Hart is in the kind of form that would warrant a recall to the England squad.

Hart has endured a difficult last two years, culminating in not making his country’s squad for their memorable World Cup campaign.

The 31-year-old, however, joined Burnley on a two-year deal in August and has started all six Premier League games for the Clarets so far this season.

Hart played an important role in his side’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday – their first league win of the campaign – in front of England boss Gareth Southgate and Dyche is confident that if called upon, he would not disappoint.

“I don’t know [if he will get called up] but if that was to occur, I think he’d be ready, if needed,” he said.

“I think Gareth is mostly trying to look to the future and the new players coming through.

“But he will also be well aware it is good to have experience around that group – that helps bring some of the younger players through.

“I trust Gareth to do whatever he has to do.”

Dyche takes his side to Burton Albion in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, where Steven Defour will make his long-awaited comeback from knee surgery undertaken in February.

The game is likely to come too soon for another long-term absentee, Robbie Brady, but the Republic of Ireland international is edging closer to a comeback after sustaining a knee injury in December.

Brady – who played 82 minutes for the Under-23s on Monday – told the club’s official website: “It’s been a long number of months now but I’m feeling better as the weeks have gone on since I picked up that knock in pre-season.

“I feel really good so, please God, it’s not much longer. I feel almost ready and I’m itching to get back.”

Fantasy Football: Hat-trick hero Messi leads Goal Champions League Team of the Week

Our Fantasy writer catches up with the first round of European action and highlights the week’s best players from Barcelona, Ajax and more

Lionel Messi certainly started the 2018-19 Champions League with a bang! He scored the first goal of the competition this season and followed it up with two more for his eighth European hat-trick, taking the lead over one Cristiano Ronaldo. That performance obviously earned the Barcelona man a spot in our Goal Fantasy Team of the Week, where he is joined by the following players.

GK: Wojciech Szczesny – Juventus – 1 Game, 5 Saves (1 Penalty Save), 1 Clean Sheet = 14 Points

DEF: Nicolas Tagliaico – Ajax – 1 Game, 2 Goals, 1 Clean Sheet = 21 Points

Tagliafico had an incredible day, but it actually could have even better as he had a header denied by a fantastic reflex save from Vasilios Barkas. Add in the clean sheet kept by Ajax, and the defender grabs our first Player of the Week award for this Champions League season.

He has never scored more than a single goal in any competition he’s played in so no need to rush out and buy him, but it will be interesting to see how he performs against the big boys in his group.

DEF: Luke Shaw – Manchester United – 1 Game, 1 Assist, 1 Clean Sheet = 10 Points

DEF: Leonardo Bonucci – Juventus – 1 Game, 1 Assist, 1 Clean Sheet = 10 Points

MID: Paul Pogba – Manchester United – 1 Game, 2 Goals, 1 Assist = 17 Points

It’s hard to be more efficient than Pogba was on Wednesday as he shot twice and scored twice against Young Boys. He is also now tied for first in assists after round one. Admittedly it’s a 31-way tie, but it’s still nice to see Frenchman flash some creativity.

It will be interesting to see if United can put up this kind of performance against a tougher opponent in Valencia but, it’s tremendously unlikely that any Pogba owner will ship him out after this effort.

MID: Miralem Pjanic – Juventus – 1 Game, 2 Goals = 14 Points

MID: Nabil Fekir – Lyon – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Assist = 11 Points

Not many people backed Lyon to get a result today which may explain why none of their players were owned in more than 6% of the Goal game. Those that gambled on Fekir were certainly rewarded with his goal and assist that helped the French side claim all three points.

The underlying stats from round one don’t really back Fekir to be able to keep this up, but that may just be a reflection of City’s defence. Next up he’ll face a Shakhtar defence who allowed the fourth most shots this week.

MID: Emre Akbaba – Galatasaray – 1 Game, 3 Assists = 11 Points

FOR: Lionel Messi – Barcelona – 1 Game, 3 Goals = 17 Points

We mentioned in the Expert’s XI that Messi was coming into this competition with far more momentum than Ronaldo and, hopefully, you listened.

The hat-trick was the Argentinan’s eighth in the Champions League which is the most in European history. Forget stats or matchups, Messi is, in every sense of the phrase, a must-own every match in the Goal game.

FOR: Michael Krmencik – Viktoria Plzen – 1 Game, 2 Goals = 12 Points

FOR: Ousmane Dembele – Barcelona – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Assist = 10 Points

Gattuso blameless for Milan woes, says Suso

The Rossoneri are the only side in Serie A yet to keep a clean sheet this season but their forward insists the squad must stand up and be counted

AC Milan forward Suso has stated that the responsibility for the club’s poor start to the season lies squarely on the shoulders of him and his teammates, not with head coach Gennaro Gattuso.

The Rossoneri are the only side in Serie A yet to keep a clean sheet this season and head to Sassuolo on the back of three straight draws against Cagliari, Atalanta and Empoli.

Such results mean that the club are languishing in 13th, six points adrift of Lazio in fourth and requiring a considerate upturn in fortunes to contest for a Champions League qualification slot.

Suso however has stressed that their dismal form is not down to the methods of the manager, instead stressing that the team took full responsibility for their lacklustre start to the season.

“Gattuso has no responsibility, these things depend on us,” the 24-year-old told Sky. “We need to be more careful and focused, without being afraid. It is the players ourselves who recognise we can do better.

“You can always improve and do more. The locker room is very close, with many good guys.

“The Champions League? We can still do it, but we can’t drop these points along the way. When you play Juventus, Inter and Roma then you can draw too, but we have to win against the smaller teams.”

Gattuso bemoaned his side’s lack of a killer instinct following the 1-1 draw with promoted Empoli on Thursday and Suso acknowledges Milan’s mentality needs to be stronger.

“I agree with the coach, we have a big-team game, just like everything else, but not the mentality,” he added.

“Like when we have to manage the advantage or be closer on the field. In this sense, it’s a matter of time and luck.

“When we have to manage a lead, we need to be closer on the pitch. It’s a matter of time and luck, but while it’s true we’re a young team, we need to grow as quickly as possible.”

Following their match against Sassuolo, Milan return to Europa League action when they host Olympiacos on October 4.

Real Madrid without Ramos and Bale for CSKA clash

Julen Lopetegui’s side have been weakened by the losses of two stars ahead of their second Group G match in the Champions League

Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale are among four Real Madrid stars missing from the squad to visit CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The La Liga giants confirmed the players that will fly to Russia for their second match of this season’s competition on Sunday, with Julen Lopetegui omitting both Ramos and Bale from his 20-man travelling party after they picked up injuries in Saturday’s scoreless derby draw against Atletico Madrid.

Spain international Ramos sustained a cut during a clash of heads with Saul Niguez early in proceedings, although he recovered to see out the contest.

Bale’s fitness is of greater concern, with the Wales winger forced off at half-time with a suspected thigh injury.

Meanwhile, left-back Marcelo and in-form Isco missed the first Madrid derby of the campaign and have again been ruled out as they recover from a respective calf injury and appendicitis.

The loss of Bale is a significant blow for the Blancos, who are struggling in front of goal this season after the summer departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. Saturday’s stalemate at the Santiago Bernabeu was the second consecutive game in which they have failed to register a single goal, following a 3-0 defeat to Sevilla in midweek.

The Welshman was Madrid’s most prominent attacker in both ties and has three goals to his name so far this season.

His injury leaves the attacking options at Lopetegui’s disposal further depleted, with Isco’s appendicitis expected to keep him sidelined for a month.

The likes of Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos and Mariano Diaz are among those likely to be called on to cover for the injured attacking pair on Tuesday.

Real’s Champions League campaign got off to a positive start earlier in September, with the 13-time winners beating Roma 3-0 in Group G opener.

Madrid sit top of the group on three points, with CSKA in second after a 2-2 away draw with Viktoria Plzen.

Hodgson eager to bring Loftus-Cheek back to Palace

The midfielder has struggled to break into Chelsea’s team since returning from a loan at Selhurst Park last season

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has vowed to try to bring Ruben Loftus-Cheek back to the club if he concedes defeat in his battle for first-team football at Chelsea.

Loftus-Cheek spent last season on loan at Palace and impressed enough to earn a place in England’s World Cup squad, returning to Stamford Bridge for 2018-19 in the hope of enjoying more game time following the exit of Antonio Conte.

But with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic adding to the January signing of Ross Barkley, new coach Maurizio Sarri is spolied for choice in midfield, so much so that neither Danny Drinkwater nor Cesc Fabregas have made a single Premier League appearance this term.

Loftus-Cheek has featured just twice from the bench, and has not played enough to persuade Gareth Southgate to pick him in the latest England squad.

Hodgson remains an admirer of the 22-year-old, and indicated he’d be happy to bring the midfielder back on loan should the opportunity arise.

“Ruben Loftus-Cheek did an outstanding job for us when he came here,” Hodgson told reporters on Friday.

“He really answered all the questions that we hoped he would answer, and luckily for us, and even more for him, it got him recognised by the national team.

“He found himself in Russia representing England, which was a perfect end to the season he had for us.

“We admire him, we like him very much and we wish him well, and of course, like a lot of other clubs, I’m sure when the day comes when he becomes available for a transfer, we will be sticking our noses into that, but whether we will get him again, that’s another matter. Who knows, we will see.”

Palace will face Wolves on Saturday at Selhurst Park in Premier League action.
