Outfit Formula: Volume Beyond Body Type

Wearing volume from head to toe is NOT reserved for those who are tall, small in the bust, and super slim. Not at all. In fact, it’s precisely these types of avant-garde looks that are beyond body type and can look fabulous on anyone. The natural contours of the figure are hidden and the clothes wear you. But you’re in control, and they don’t boss you around.

I’ve seen women in Japan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Germany, South Africa and Sweden across all sizes, heights and ages wear this vibe with panache. Scandinavian retailer COS, and German retailer OSKA do a particularly good job of pulling it together.

Here are four outfit ideas to get you started. If you click on the outfits, you’ll see the components of each outfit in detail. Interestingly, each outfit has been completed with a somewhat chunky yet refined flat shoe. Heels are not the norm, perhaps because they are not as grounding. There is something about flat sturdy footwear that anchors and holds the volume upright so that it does not tip over.

1. Monotone Bulk

A flared midi has been combined with two oversized sweaters. One has long sleeves and one has shorter sleeves. Flat mid-calf boots that close the gap and cover the leg are grounding. A bulky, long, oversized and cocoon-shaped parker has been layered over the top, and everything works like a dream. The olive, grey, and black palette is not necessarily the secret, but the low contrast between the items and colours is. Your eye creates peace in all the volume by eyeballing the vertical column of colour. Feel free to create the look in any palette as long as the items are very similar in colour.

2. Wrapped Straight Drape

This version sports the least volume and the highest colour contrasts of the four outfits. A bold patterned sack dress is combined with a boxy and shapeless high-contrast cardigan. The unbuttoned cardigan creates a vertical line down the centre front of the outfit which draws the eye up and down. The stirrup leggings add ‘80s fun, warmth, and structure. The chunky flat oxfords are grounding and elongating in the same colour as the leggings. The scarf adds textural, insulating and happy pizzazz. I’m a high contrast outfit gal so this version is my favourite. Plus the ‘80s stirrup leggings bring back fond memories and make me smile.

3. Architectural Casual

Here a very oversized pullover is combined with a voluminous midi skirt in exactly the same colour. Flat black mid-calf boots ground the outfit. It’s the low contrast between the three items that gives them their structure. The low contrast allows the eye to rest and create order in all the volume. It also offsets any horizontally cutting lines. The drawstring on the hem of the skirt tempers its volume too.

4. Crisp Volume

An oversized pullover is combined with a pair of very roomy lantern pants. The contrast between the top and bottom is high thereby creating a horizontal line across the middle of the body. But the contrast is harmonized and the volume is tempered in a few important ways. First, the grounding flat black footwear is low contrast to the pants which elongates the leg line. The oversized coat is the same colour as the roomy pullover which allows the eye to rest and find structure. Clever, and beautifully styled.

'Add a little bit of skill' – Bolt given hope over Jamaica call-up

The Olympic sprint king and world record holder has long held footballing ambitions – now he could get a chance to play for his country

Usian Bolt has been told to add some skill to his lightning speed to win a place in the Jamaica national team.

The retired sprinter – who holds the world-record at 100m and 200m and a eight-time Olympic gold medalist – has been trying to launch a football career.

Reports suggest he has priced himself out of a modest contract offer from Australian club Central Coast Mariners, despite scoring twice in a recent friendly for the A-League outfit.

He has had his fair share of critics, however, with Perth Glory striker Andy Keogh recently slamming the 32-year-old for having a “touch like a trampoline”.

However, Jamaican FA President Michael Ricketts believes the national hero could be an asset to his country – if he can develop some footballing finesse.

“Usain has a special attribute in his speed,” he told ESPN FC.

“If he can add a little bit of skill, some flair, he could supplement this Jamaican team. The players would certainly welcome someone like Usain. I have had informal discussions with some of them and they are excited at the prospect of playing with Usain.

“If he can make the transition from being a superstar on the track to being a good enough football player, then we will certainly call him up.

“We are presently in a competition, the Nations League. After the Nations League, we go into the Gold Cup. By then we will have had a chance to look at him and we’ll be in a position to make a decision.”

Ricketts admitted, though, that he was frustrated Bolt – who was also offered a deal by Maltese club Valletta – hadn’t joined a club in his home country.

“I am a little disappointed that Usain hasn’t signed up with a Jamaican club,” he added. “That would give us a chance to see a lot more of him.

“The coach will make a decision but we would love to see him in a serious, real match situation.

“We are hopeful because Usain would certainly be a crowd-puller. If he turns up in a Jamaican outfit then a lot of people would want to turn up and watch Usain Bolt play football.”

Bolt has harboured a dream – not always realistically – of becoming a footballer since before his decision to quit athletics.

In 2016 he said: “If I could get to play for Manchester United, that would be like a dream come true. Yes, that would be epic.”

He trained with German giants Borussia Dortmund, South African club Sundowns and Norway’s Stromsgodset before linking up with the Mariners in August.

Walker delighted England giving Rooney 'the send-off he deserves'

The decision to bring the striker back into the England squad has proved controversial, but the Manchester City full-back is in favour

Kyle Walker feels Wayne Rooney’s return to make a final Three Lions appearance is a fitting tribute to England’s record goalscorer.

Rooney will make his 120th and final appearance for England in a friendly against United States this month, with some of the proceeds from the match going to his charity foundation.

The move has been met with a mixed reception, with England’s all-time record appearance maker Peter Shilton describing his return after two years without a cap as “completely wrong”.

Alan Shearer also criticised the decision to give Rooney an England farewell, claiming it would turn the US game – three days before a crucial Nations League clash with Croatia – into a “testimonial”.

Rooney’s former England team-mate Walker, however, is fully in support of the D.C. United star being given one last appearance at Wembley.

“It’s good. Wayne was there from when I was 20,” Walker told a news conference ahead of Manchester City’s Champions League meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk.

“He helped me right through my England career and I think it’s the send-off he deserves for what he’s done for both English football and for England.”

Walker’s City and England team-mate Raheem Sterling has been in decisive form in recent weeks, earning praise from coach Pep Guardiola.

Sterling scored twice in England’s last game, a thrilling 3-2 Nations League defeat of Spain, and he struck another double in a demolition of Southampton in City’s last Premier League game.

And Walker is the latest to back the 23-year-old to reach the very top of the sport.

“He’s been a joy to work with,” Walker said of Sterling. “I’ve played with him in numerous games now on the right-hand side. It’s a pleasure to play behind him.

“I just said to him to play with a smile on your face. With the players we have in the dressing room and the manager we can help him to reach the levels he can.

“But there’s still work to be done. He can dedicate himself to the game to make sure he is one of the best players in the world.”

Wolves reach €18m agreement with Sporting over Rui Patricio transfer

After the Portuguese side went to FIFA to demand compensation for the goalkeeper, the two teams have now worked out an agreement

Wolves have announced that they have reached an €18 million (£16m/$20m) agreement with Sporting CP for the transfer of Rui Patricio.

The Portugal international goalkeeper cancelled his deal with Sporting in the summer after an attack by some of the club’s supporters following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Patricio would go on to join Wolves on a free transfer, which did not go over well with Sporting.

The Portuguese side complained to FIFA over the situation, demanding €58.7 million (£51.8m/$65.5m) in compensation from Wolves.

But the two sides have now reached an agreement on a much smaller fee, with the Premier League side now considering the matter closed.

“Wolves have reached an agreement that will see Sporting Clube de Portugal receive a fee of €18m for the transfer of goalkeeper Rui Patricio,” Wolves said on their official website.

“Wolves now consider the matter finalised and will make no further comment.”

Patricio has been a mainstay for Wolves this season, starting all 10 of the club’s Premier League matches.

Wolves are currently in 10th place in the league, and will take on Tottenham in their next match on Saturday.

Real Madrid regretting losing not only Ronaldo but also future superstar Hakimi

The European champions have two big problem positions this season, with BVB’s Morocco star showing them just what they are missing at right-back

When Spain faced Morocco at the World Cup, there was one Madrid-born teenager that caught the eye despite being on a pitch with World Cup winners and Champions League greats.

But strangely, Real youth academy graduate Achraf Hakimi was not lining out for La Roja, but instead facing the country of his birth while representing his parents’ homeland.

Spain’s loss looked like Morocco’s gain. Not only did the 19-year-old Hakimi perform like a seasoned veteran, he also spoke like one beforehand.

Morocco had already been eliminated but the versatile full-back insisted that his approach to the Group B clash would be anything but friendly.

“I’ll be playing against my team-mates and that makes it special but you don’t have any friends on the pitch,” he told reporters in the pre-match press conference.

“We play for our country, for the feelings of many people, not only Moroccans living in Spain, but for the entire country. We have our way of playing and we must be competitive without the fear of failure.”

Morocco heeded Hakimi’s words and would have defeated Spain had it not been for a controversial, VAR-assisted equaliser from Iago Aspas in stoppage time.

Hakimi’s performances on the game’s grandest stage were made all the more impressive for the fact that he had travelled to Russia having played more international games than league games.

Still, after breaking into the Real squad in Zinedine Zidane’s final season with the club, he had hoped to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for the 2018-19 campaign and add to his nine Liga appearances.

However, he was unsure of what the future held for him, with Spain coach Julen Lopetegui having been announced as Zidane’s successor in Madrid on the eve of the World Cup.

“It caught us by surprise, not only myself but I think all you guys too,” he admitted to  Football Espana .

“I’ll have to go back to Madrid and talk to [Lopetegui]. I want to stay, they’re the club of my life and I’m happy.

“But we’ll see what happens. I’ll talk to the coach and see what’s best for me.”

However, Hakimi was not part of Lopetegui’s short- or medium-term plans and, in July, he was sent to Borussia Dortmund on a two-year loan deal.

The Bundesliga side do not have an option to purchase the full-back as part of the deal but have already benefitted from his prodigious talent.

After scoring once and creating two more goals in his first four league games with BVB, Hakimi had a breakout performance in the Champions League when Dortmund hosted Atletico Madrid.

Playing against Spanish opposition is something he clearly enjoys and he thoroughly exploited Atletico’s narrow setup to roam down the left before cutting inside onto his stronger right foot.

He ended the game with three assists as Dortmund smashed Atleti 4-0 but revealed that Dortmund coach Lucien Favre believes he can develop his game even further.

“He’s a coach who likes his teams to defend well and that’s what he’s asking me to do,” Hakimi told Marca . “In attack, I’m ready, but the coach wants me to improve tactically and defensively and I think I’m getting it.”

Favre has no doubts about that, enthusing: “Hakimi’s playing so well. He’s great going forward and he does a good job at the back.

“He played at left-back for Morocco but prefers to play at right-back. He has so much potential.”

At Dortmund, he is showing Real Madrid just what they are missing. He could have been the right-back that Lopetegui needed in his time of crisis.

A calf injury ruled Daniel Carvajal out of the three games that ended Lopetegui’s tenure at Santiago Bernabeu, with the former Spain boss reluctant to trust summer signing Alvaro Odriozola and trying a couple of awful alternatives in the form of Lucas Vazquez and Nacho Fernandez.

Centre-back Nacho lined out at the unfamiliar position in the Clasico, where Barcelona ran riot over their rivals, putting the final nail in Lopetegui’s managerial coffin.

The next Real boss will not be so quick to let young talent out the door and when Hakimi returns to Madrid in 2020, they will have a fully-formed superstar on their books.

Southgate hails Kane as world's best goalscorer after dramatic Nations League winner

Kane struck in the final five minutes against Croatia to cap a dramatic comeback and send England to the Nations League semi-finals

Harry Kane was described by England manager Gareth Southgate as “the best goalscorer in the world” after his dramatic winner against Croatia earned his side a Nations League Finals berth.

Kane’s late impact turned Sunday’s Group 4 meeting at Wembley on its head, the England captain involved in substitute Jesse Lingard’s equaliser before scoring the 85th-minute winner himself from close range.

England will now compete with Portugal and two other teams, who are yet to be decided, for the inaugural Nations League crown at the end of the domestic season.

Kane had not scored for England since the World Cup, where his six goals earned the Golden Boot but some flat performances in the knockout rounds saw Southgate criticised for not resting the striker.

However, a proud Southgate made it clear Kane’s importance to England cannot be underestimated after the Three Lions gained a measure of revenge for their extra-time World Cup semi-final loss by relegating Croatia to League B.

“I think Harry is the best goalscorer in the world frankly so you’re always loathe to take a player of his ability off,” Southgate told a news conference.

“Some people question decisions in the summer but he’s our main penalty taker and our leader.

“In 98 per cent of games his hold up play and everything is critical, he played a fantastic pass for Raheem [Sterling] in the first half.

“So we have huge belief in him and he is so hungry to lead the team further.”

Kane proved his class in the final third but, Andrej Kramaric’s deflected opener aside, England also impressed at the back, with inexperienced defenders Joe Gomez and Ben Chilwell earning Southgate’s praise along with teenage winger Jadon Sancho, who came off the bench.

“I think we knew to keep the hunger and challenge – there were things for us to talk about but you need competition for places,” Southgate added.

“We knew the level of our young players and we looked at Ben ahead of the summer and thought he was not quite ready but he started the season really well with Leicester.

“The younger ones have emerged so quick, Sancho so quickly an option from the bench, but we know the quality of the players. Gomez would have probably come with us in the summer [to the World Cup] had he been fit.

“We’re not afraid to put in a 21 and a 22-year-old at the back today. It’s easier to gamble on young forwards but those guys have been good enough with great quality and they’ll only improve with these experiences.”

Southgate and his squad can now look forward to competing for England’s first major international silverware since their only World Cup triumph in 1966.

“I am hugely proud of all the players and the staff because we’ve grown together and improved every step,” he added. “I think today was another big occasion, a big experience, plenty of pressure and expectation on the game but they coped well.

“In the first half we played so well and had good chances, second half we had to show another side and show character. We had five to 10 minutes after they scored with counter-attacks.

“I said to TV, we may be a new England but we scored from a long throw and a wide free-kick so maybe nothing changes!

“The connection with fans is so pleasing for me as I’ve not heard Wembley like that for years. We’ve give them some big days and nights this year and their energy helped us to get over the line in the big moments.

“Next year looks exciting to look forward to and all the players want to come with us, young players are desperate to be a part of it. The feeling round the team is powerful and we have to build on it.”

Newcastle to look outside of England for transfer help – Benitez

The Magpies have not yet set their transfer targets for January yet, but are casting a worldwide net in their search for reinforcements

Newcastle will look outside of England for transfer options this January, according to manager Rafa Benitez.

The Magpies started the Premier League season terribly, drawing just three matches through the month of October.

However, the start of November saw Newcastle notch their first two wins of the season and escape the relegation zone.

Reinforcements in January are necessary to make certain the club remains in the top flight, but Benitez admitted the club’s options in England are somewhat limited due to having Kenedy and Salomon Rondon already on loan.

“As far as the transfer window, with the budget and all these things, the first thing is to find the right players because you cannot bring players from the Premier League on loan as we have two players already,” Benitez said.

“We have to see abroad and see where we can maybe buy players from. Instead of doing that, you have to look for the players that you want – and then analyse who we can, or cannot, sign.

“At the moment it is too early, but we are working on names and players. Still though we do not have ‘this one’ that we are going for him because it is a little too early.”

Buying from English clubs is not totally out, according to Benitez, but the club is casting a wide net, looking beyond the Premier League for their transfer options.

Benitez cited the club’s signing of starting goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who joined last January, as an example of a player from outside the top leagues who has become a big contributor to the Magpies.

In fact, the manager said they are even looking beyond Europe, keeping an eye toward the Americas and Asia for possible targets.

“We try to see everywhere if we can,” Benitez added. “Apart from England – although we are also watching England – we are looking for options everywhere.

“We have to see everywhere because we have to consider who we can buy or loan or whatever. It’s just to bring the players that, in your opinion, will be better for your squad and give you something different.

“Martin was an example from the Czech league, but we are watching every league; not just in Europe, either, we are watching America and all over. We are watching everything. America, South America, Asia – everything. We have a player from Japan, another from South Korea, so we know we can find players from everywhere.

“The teams at the top of the table in different leagues, it is very rare that the player will come here. It has to be someone that maybe you know, or know their agent, or you have some connection in some way.

“But it’s quite difficult, so you have to see every league around the world, see the options, and then the first thing is: ‘OK, this is the player. Can we buy them? Can it be a loan?’ All these questions, but first we must find the players.”

Newcastle visit Burnley on Monday, looking to make it three straight wins in the Premier League.

'Ranieri is a great appointment' – New Fulham boss backed by Berbatov

The Bulgarian played under the Italian at Monaco and feels he can keep the Cottagers in the Premier League after taking over from Slavisa Jokanovic

Dimitar Berbatov has praised Fulham for the appointment of Claudio Ranieri and believes he is exactly what the club need to survive in the Premier League.

Ranieri has replaced Slavisa Jokanovic at Craven Cottage following a disappointing start to the season which has left them bottom of the table with just five points from 12 games.

Berbatov, who played under Ranieri at Monaco, is confident the former Chelsea and Leicester manager has what it takes to keep Fulham in the top flight.

“Ranieri was my coach at Monaco so I know him well, and I think if you appoint someone in this situation, with Fulham are last in the table, you want to appoint someone with great experience who could help them stay up,” the former Fulham striker wrote in his Betfair column .

“He is a great appointment, I wish him luck and I know he’s going to work hard, because that’s what he does.”

Berbatov also believes that Ranieri could get the best out of Ryan Sessegnon, with the 18-year-old having only scored once so far this season.

“When I was under him at Monaco, there were so many young players there like Martial and James Rodriguez,” added Berbatov.

“All these talented footballers with potential and he was working well with them. Ranieri has that experience, he knows how to handle not only young talent but the big names too.”

Although Berbatov is impressed with the appointment of Ranieri he feels the sacking of Jokanovic was premature, despite a run of six consecutive defeats.

He said: “it’s a bit unfair for Jokanovic to go. Look at Newcastle, for example, they didn’t win a game for 10 matches in a row and now they’ve won back-to-back games.”

Berbatov was impressed with Jokanovic’s management style as he believes Fulham should not stray too far from the possession-based approach he brought to Craven Cottage during his tenure.

“They play good football and this is what I like about them.

“I watched them against Liverpool and they don’t just kick the ball to see what happens next, they pass around the ball well.

“Sometimes this won’t give you results because of the teams you face in the league are of better quality, or you have bad luck like their disallowed goal against Liverpool. However, the results will come if you stick to your philosophy.”

Inter and AC Milan announce plans to work together on stadium project

The two rivals, and co-tenants at San Siro, are looking to work together to develop a “state of the art” home for the Italian giants

Inter and AC Milan have agreed to a “memorandum of understanding” over plans to develop a stadium.

The Serie A and local rivals currently share Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, also known as San Siro, and have done so since 1947.

Inter and AC Milan, who are second and fourth in Serie A this season respectively, consider a new stadium essential for both fan bases and the long-term success for each team.

The pair have no intention of ending their sharing arrangement, as they have now announced their plans to find a solution to their stadium question together.

Among their options, redeveloping San Siro is a possibility the clubs are considering.

After meeting with Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala, they hope to finalise the first stage of their plans by the end of 2018.

“F.C. Internazionale Milano S.p.A. and A.C. Milan S.p.A. can confirm that they’ve set forth a memorandum of understanding to work together on developing a modern and avant-garde stadium,” the clubs’ statement read.

“A stadium adapted to current standards is fundamental in allowing fans to enjoy a unique experience and to guarantee success both on and off the pitch. The two clubs believe that a shared stadium is of primary interest to all stakeholders from a financial, administrative and technical point of view.

“The two clubs are evaluating a number of possible options, including the redevelopment of the Stadio San Siro. A collaborative group has already restarted the analysis of different alternatives.”

AC Milan released a similar statement, with the rival teams both stating that they would like to have the initial process finished by the end of the turn.

“The clubs aim to conclude an initial evaluation phase by the end of the year, in order to commence the technical and administrative activities required to deliver a modern stadium to their fans in the shortest possible timeframe,” AC Milan’s statement read.

A July release by the Milan city council promised “extraordinary maintenance and innovation of the stadium, to be carried out by June 2020.”

The San Siro has been shared by the two Italian giants since 1947, when Inter joined AC Milan in using the venue as a home ground.

Renovations were carried out ahead of the 1990 World Cup and again ahead of the 2016 Champions League final.

They come into the match having recently played out a tense 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League, but they hold an edge over the Portuguese side having beaten them 1-0 in Lisbon in October.

A win for Sporting would place them level on points at the top of the group heading into the final two fixtures.

A win for Arsenal over Sporting on Thursday would ensure their passage into the next stage of the Europa League and Emery has challenged his players to continue their impressive form by securing early qualification from the group.

“It’s one way [to win] a title and get into the Champions League next year,” the Gunners boss told reporters ahead of the game. “The second focus is on our work, to continue to improve and to continue with the players, taking responsibility and confidence.

“Above all, I want to continue at the Emirates [together] with our supporters with the same spirit as in the same matches as against Blackpool, Leicester, Liverpool. [The game] is a very good test for us for those two things I have spoken about.”

Recent results – namely score draws against Crystal Palace and Liverpool – may suggest that the Gunners have hit a wobbly patch, but they do not tell the full story. Emery’s men remain as formidable as ever and, having already recorded a narrow victory in Lisbon, they will be fully confident in their ability to defeat the Portuguese outfit.

Arsenal return to Premier League action three days later against a deceptively talented Wolves side before the international break and they will no doubt be keen to maintain their high standards heading into the busy winter period.
