Pope challenges governments to take 'drastic' climate change measures

Pope FrancisPope FrancisPope Francis stuck in elevator for 25 minutes Pope challenges governments to take ‘drastic’ climate change measures Pope calls for prayers that Amazon fires are controlled MORE on Sunday called on world governments to take “drastic” action on climate change.

According to Reuters, he said that governments will have a “responsibility” at the United Nations Climate Action Summit later this month to show “the political will to take drastic measures to achieve as quickly as possible zero net greenhouse gas emissions and to limit the average increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius with respect to pre-industrial levels, in accordance with the Paris Agreement goals.”

“We have caused a climate emergency that gravely threatens nature and life itself, including our own,” he  said in a written message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, the news service noted.

Francis reportedly said that governments should “renew commitments decisive for directing the planet towards life, not death.”

He also said it is time to abandon fossil fuels and move toward clean energy and “a sustainable and circular economy.”

Francis has repeatedly focused on the environment. He criticized the U.S. in 2017 for pulling out of the Paris climate agreement.

On Sunday, his weekly public address was delayed because he was trapped in a Vatican elevator, Reuters noted.

He told the crowd in St. Peter’s Square that he was stuck in the elevator for 25 minutes before firefighters freed him.

“A round of applause for the fire brigade,” he said, according to the news service.

Mattis: 'I'll speak out' about policy issues 'when the time comes'

Former Defense Secretary James MattisJames Norman MattisMattis: ‘I’ll speak out’ about policy issues ‘when the time comes’ Mattis: Trump is ‘an unusual president’ Ex-Mattis aide sues Pentagon claiming they are delaying his memoir MORE said Tuesday he will speak out about the Trump administration’s defense policy and strategy “when the time’s right.”

“There will come a time when I speak out on strategic issues, policy issues, that I do not have a question about, but I need to give some period of time to those that have to carry out the responsibilities to protect this country in a very, very difficult age,” Mattis said at a Council on Foreign Relations event in New York.

“When the time comes — I’ll know it when it’s right, I can’t tell you; I can’t tell myself, I’m not keeping a secret — when the time’s right to speak out about policy and strategy, I’ll speak out,” Mattis said in the discussion of his forthcoming book, “Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead.”

Mattis has, however, written implicit criticisms of Trump over his decisions, particularly regarding U.S. allies.

In his resignation letter to the president, which was included in the book, Mattis stressed their differences on the importance of help from other nations.

On Tuesday, Mattis said that he would hold off on any criticisms as he doesn’t believe that if you leave an administration over a matter of policy, “that you then get out and start talking. … I don’t think it’s the right thing to do.”

“We’ve got a president and a secretary of State and a secretary of Defense trying to protect this great big experiment that you and I call America, and I’m not going make their job more difficult by a former secretary of Defense speaking now, from what I would call the cheap seats, not responsible for anything,” he said.

Mattis’s book, released on Tuesday, is not a tell-all of his service in the administration. Rather, it lays out stories and lessons learned from his years of experience in the U.S. military.

He explained that he did not include much on his time working with Trump because the book was never intended to be about his role as secretary of Defense and that he had agreed to write it years before he was even formally nominated for the position.

“I signed the contract to write the book in 2013, we were on version five in 2017 and, we thought, ready to roll it out when I had to put it on hold,” Mattis said. “It was never about an unanticipated job as secretary of Defense.”

He added that he has full confidence in the American people to discern “the political associations, the political qualifications of people.”

“I’ve got a lot of trust in the American people, I don’t lose sleep over the American people,” Mattis said.

Emma Stone Says Wearing a Corset Shifted Her Organs — and She’s Right, That’s a Thing

“For the first month, I couldn’t breathe,” she told The Graham Norton Show’s namesake host. “I would smell menthol and it would make me think I was in a wide-open space and could breathe for a moment in time.”

Oh, and if you think oxygen deprivation is rough, you should try rearranging your organs (JK, please don’t). “After a month, all my organs shifted,” the Oscar winner explained, “It was gross, and if you don’t have to, don’t do it.” Don’t worry, Em — unless Marie Antoinette herself rises from her grave and begins extolling the benefits of corset-wear, we won’t be adopting the restrictive trend.

Dakota Fanning had similar things to say about her experience shooting TNT’s limited series The Alienist (which is set in New York near the turn of the 20th century). After initially struggling with the garment and even fainting when she first tried it on, the 24-year-old told W Magazine, that her body “completely changed.”

“I mean, I’ve worn corsets before but never for this long of a period,” Fanning continued. “Seven months; your body completely changes. You can get it on without even lacing or unlacing. By the end I was just snapping it on, snapping it off. It was like second nature.”

Well, Dakota and Emma were onto something … Corsets really do reshape your body, and even rearrange the position of your organs. While there’s no evidence that long-term corset-wear actually affects life expectancy, we can’t imagine that having a piece of fabric sculpting your innards like Play-Doh is a positive thing.

Tommy Hilfiger Is Swapping Gigi Hadid for a New Design Partner

So there’s good news and there’s bad news. We’ll rip the band-aid off with the bad news first: Gigi Hadid’s contract with Tommy Hilfiger, with whom she collaborated for two years on four Tommy x Gigi capsule collections, has expired. But don’t cry just yet. The good news: Hilfiger has announced that actress/producer/singer/style icon Zendaya will be joining the label as the women’s ambassador.

In her new role, the 22-year-old will both star in the brand’s Spring 2019 women’s campaign and collaborate with Hilfiger on a Tommy x Zendaya capsule collection. With her influential status as Hollywood’s favorite fashion darling, not to mention, a massive social media following, it’s easy to see why Zendaya was brought on to work on the label.

“I love to collaborate with people who are passionate about making their dreams a reality and who inspire the next generation to do the same,” Hilfiger told WWD. “Zendaya has become a global icon, using fashion to make a bold statement while always staying true to herself. Our capsule collection will fuse her eclectic style with the Americana spirit of our brand.”

Much like Hilfiger’s partnership with Hadid, Zendaya’s collection with follow a similar see-now-buy-now model (meaning all pieces will be available for purchase as soon as they hit the runway) that has been a major success with the brand’s millennial fans. However, it will be interesting to see if the Tommy x Zendaya collection release will be the fashion show extravaganza that marked all four of the designer’s past capsule releases with Hadid.

For Zendaya, this isn’t her first foray into the design space. In 2016, she released an affordable clothing and shoe line with her stylist, Law Roach, called Daya by Zendaya and most recently, she partnered with British fast fashion retailer Boohoo on a curated collection that was released this past March.

“Fashion is more than just wearing cool clothes,” said Zendaya to WWD. “It’s a way to celebrate self-expression and individuality, which is extremely empowering. This is why I am proud to partner with Tommy Hilfiger.”

You’ll have to wait until next February to get your hands on the collection when it shows at a yet to be released location, but knowing Zendaya’s style, it’s sure to be good.

Kim Kardashian Admits She Got Married While on Ecstasy

On last night’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Scott teased Kim, asking, “You were fun, right? At one time? You were, like, wild during some of your years, right?”

Answer: yes, and like husband Kanye West’s slightly incestuous musings, it was all while on ecstasy (or “XTCY”).

According to Kim, she took MDMA twice, and made poor life decisions both times.

“I got married on ecstasy. The first time,” she said of wedding music producer Damon Thomas at just 19.

“I did ecstasy once, I got married. I did it again and I made a sex tape. Like, everything bad would happen.”

“You were high on ecstasy when you did that sex tape?” Disick clarified of that infamous 2003 home video.

“Absolutely!” Kim confirmed. “Everybody knows it. My jaw was shaking the whole time.”

“I definitely went through a wild phase in my late teens. I’m not like that anymore,” Kardashian confessed later in the episode. “But I still have fun! Don’t get it twisted, I’m always the life of the party.”

Now that, we believe.

The Reported Reason for Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s Feud Is Really Confusing

Much to our confusion, Us Weekly reported that Meghan and Kate “aired their grievances with one another” on Christmas Day, with Middleton sharing that she felt as though Harry’s bride had “used her to climb the royal ladder.” Um, what? As Glamour pointed out, marrying a Prince is a pretty surefire way to “climb the royal ladder” — what sort of leg-up could Kate possibly provide that Meghan doesn’t already have?

Elle hit back at the insinuation with comments from a source of their own. “The stories of the two duchesses having a major ongoing feud are just overblown,” the outlet’s source explained. “[Meghan and Kate] have enormous respect for each other and are both devoted to representing Her Majesty in the humanitarian and charitable work they do.” “Respect” isn’t exactly code for braiding each other’s hair at Princess Camp, but it’s a palatable explanation.

The upshot of it all? No matter which story you choose to believe, they all seem to end the same way: with Meghan and Kate in a good, amicable place (and a very happy Queen to boot). If the first four days are any indication, 2019 is the year of totally chill royal in-laws.

Hundreds of Labor Day flights canceled as Dorian bears down on US

Hundreds of U.S. flights were canceled over Labor Day weekend as Hurricane Dorian continues to approach the eastern seaboard.

As many as 600 flights scheduled for Monday have been canceled, USA Today reported, citing flight tracker FlightAware.

The majority of the cancellations stem from Florida airports, including 227 flight cancellations to and from Orlando’s main airport and 62 flights from Orlando Sanford International Airport.

Fort Lauderdale International Airport canceled upwards of 160 flights to and from the city. West Palm Beach canceled nearly 100 trips, according to flight tracker.

Southwest and Spirit airlines have reportedly canceled the most flights with approximately 130 each.

Airlines rushed to cancel flights before the hurricane’s path shifted away from Puerto Rico and Florida. The storm is now bearing down on portions of the Eastern seaboard including Georgia and the Carolinas.

Orlando International Airport, which flies hundreds of travelers to and from Disney World and other attractions, will not close on Labor Day as originally planned after the storm shift.

“Original storm forecasts reported the hurricane could have greatly impacted Orlando International and the entire Central Florida region,” the airport said in a statement to USA Today on Saturday.  “The latest updates show that Hurricane Dorian has changed its path and has proven to be an unpredictable storm.”

Prior to Dorian’s formation in the Atlantic, the 2019 Labor Day weekend was expected to be a record-breaking weekend for U.S. travel.

Airlines for America predicted that 17.5 million passengers were expected to fly over the holiday.

Many airlines, however, are allowing travelers to change their flights without penalties, USA Today noted.

Dorian made landfall as a Category 5 storm on Sunday, pummeling the Bahamas before making its way north.

The National Hurricane Center warned Sunday evening that strong winds are expected to affect the Carolinas and Georgia early this week.

China launches case against US tariffs at WTO

China on Monday launched a case against the United States with the World Trade Organization over import duties, CNBC reported.

The Chinese commerce ministry said the latest set of sanctions violated the consensus reached by leaders of China and the U.S. in a meeting in Osaka, Japan, in a statement obtained by the outlet.

The latest tariffs, which went into effect Sunday, affect $112 billion of goods, including Chinese footwear, smartwatches and flat-panel televisions.

Those came in response to China setting new tariffs including on crude oil.

Trade tensions between the U.S. and China have escalated in recent weeks as negotiations have stalled.

The U.S. has scheduled another round of 15 percent tariffs for Dec. 15 covering about $160 billion in Chinese imports. Beijing has vowed retaliatory tariffs that, combined with the Sunday increases, would reportedly cover $75 billion in American products should the Dec. 15 tariffs take effect.

Chinese state media on Sunday knocked the U.S. for the continuing tariffs, arguing they would hurt American interests as well, according to Reuters.

“The United States should learn how to behave like a responsible global power and stop acting as a ‘school bully,’” the official Xinhua news agency said, Reuters noted.

“As the world’s only superpower, it needs to shoulder its due responsibility, and join other countries in making this world a better and more prosperous place. Only then can America become great again,” Xinhua added.
