Barcelona should ignore past in Neymar pursuit, says Puyol

The Catalan legend has urged the club to ignore the past behaviour of their former star

Barcelona should ignore what happened with Neymar in the past, according to Carles Puyol, as they potentially look to sign the Paris Saint-Germain forward.

Neymar, 27, could be set to leave the Parc des Princes this close season after sporting director Leonardo confirmed the star was for sale at the right price.

The Brazil international left Barca in a world-record €222 million move two years ago, but he has been strongly linked with a return to Camp Nou.

Former Barcelona captain Puyol, who won 18 trophies with the club, said the past should have no impact on the La Liga champions’ decision.

“In the end, you have to value the present, not so much the past,” Puyol said on Monday, via Spanish media.

“If the player is on the market and you need him, you don’t have to be thinking about what happened a few years ago.”

Neymar has still starred in two seasons with PSG, but both campaigns have been hampered by injuries.

The Brazil star also recently missed out on the Copa America following an injury against Qatar in a pre-tournament friendly, although Brazil went on to win the tournament on home soil by topping Peru in the tournament finale.

However, Puyol believes the star forward can still deliver plenty for Barcelona.

“Neymar is a great player who can make a difference,” he said.

“He’s not been able to play his best football [at PSG] because of injuries, but he still has a lot to give to football.”

Camp Nou legend Lobo Carrasco isn’t on the same page as Puyol when it comes to the Brazilian however, declaring the club must get its priorities right.

“I do not want Neymar to come in,” Carrasco told El Chiringuito.

“Barca needs to have a Puyol. With the signing of Neymar, Barca would lose even more at the back.”

While a return to Barcelona remains uncertain, Neymar’s future at PSG appears in serious doubt after he failed to report on time for pre-season.

The Ligue 1 champions declaring appropriate measures will be taken as a result – though Neymar’s father is adamant the club were aware of his son’s plans.

‘This is the start of something massive’ – Heath hoping Women's World Cup win can help fight for equal pay

The United States defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the final and the winger believes that this could help push their fight for equal pay

Tobin Heath believes the United States Women’s World Cup win over the Netherlands can be a springboard for their equal pay fight.

After the USA emerged 2-0 winners in Lyon, large parts of the stadium could be heard chanting ‘equal pay’, something which followed the booing of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

And Heath, who started six of her country’s games as she claimed her second World Cup title, is excited about what comes next.

“ We’ve been fighting for this for a long time as a team and to be on this platform on the world stage and to hear the stadium chanting for it, it was a really, really powerful moment,” the winger said.

“I hope that causes change. It’s really cool to be not just winning and fighting for things on the field, but fighting for things off the field and doing so in a way through sport I think is really powerful.

“I think it’s just the start of something massive and culture-changing.

“Unless we get to the final and obviously win the final, maybe that chant isn’t being chanted.

“So I think in a lot of ways, this team has been kind of, I guess you could call it synchro-destiny with this fight for equal pay and I think it’s our responsibility and it’s something that we love to do.”

Heath’s international team-mate Megan Rapinoe has been at the forefront of the push for change, with the fight for equal pay just one thing she has been very vocal about.

Some worried the non-football related headlines she was grabbing could have a negative impact on this team, as they aimed to pick up back-to-back World Cup titles.

But it certainly didn’t, and it didn’t affect Rapinoe either, who won both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball for her efforts on the pitch.

“We’ve got to celebrate these great, great sports moments and she had a fantastic tournament. She’s an incredible player,” Heath said.

“Alex [Morgan] had a fantastic tournament, Rose [Lavelle] had a fantastic tournament.

“It’s these special moments that only the World Cup brings around so we didn’t need to celebrate our teammates, they did wonderful.”

Speaking more about Rapinoe’s impact, the 31-year-old said: “She’s a fantastic leader for us both on and off the field and I think she’s really led with a lot of grace and by action too.

“It’s not easy to speak up and then also to follow it up by action but she’s done it so well, especially in this tournament, to stay focused and motivated at the task at hand but also be fighting a parallel fight as well.

“It’s kind of synonymous with the US women’s national team, you know.

“We fight to win games and we fight for things off the field too. But to see the momentum that this tournament has kind of pushed forth with all of those is just fantastic.”

The victory also answered a lot of critics who questioned coach Jill Ellis and also the team, particularly after they crashed out of the 2016 Olympics in the quarter-finals, losing on penalties to Sweden.

“To be able to say [we are] world champions, I think [that] is the only thing that you can say against critics in a lot of ways,” Heath added.

“This team has been through so much, from 2015 to 2016 to now.

“It’s incredible and it speaks volumes to this group and to kind of the resilience of this group and the players that have been a big part of the last however many years in order to bring this team and keep this team at the top.

“It’s not easy, especially in this generation of football where more and more teams are competitive. You saw this in the tournament.

“For us to still remain where we are I think is a testament to the determination and the hard work that goes in every single day with these players and with the staff.”

Who has more red cards in their career: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

They are perennial foes when it comes to glory, but who comes out on top in the disciplinary table?

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are more or less neck-and-neck when it comes to certain statistics – goals, Ballons d’Or and so forth – but one area where there is no comparison is discipline.

The Barcelona captain and the Juventus star are both fierce competitors and they are known for letting their tempers spill over on occasion when opponents manage to get into their heads or, indeed, if things aren’t going their way on the pitch.

Messi was controversially sent off in Argentina’s Copa America 2019 third-place play-off victory against Chile in July following a heated confrontation with Gary Medel. It was his first time seeing red in 14 years.

But just how exactly does the Barca forward measure up to his arch-rival when it comes to crossing the officials?

Ronaldo’s red card record is much more damning than that of the Argentine, whose contentious dismissal against La Roja was just his second red card in his senior career.

Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi red cards

Date Player Match Competition
May 15, 2004 Cristiano Ronaldo Aston Villa 0-2 Manchester United Premier League
August 15, 2005 Lionel Messi Hungary 1-2 Argentina International friendly
January 14, 2006 Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester City 3-1 Manchester United Premier League
August 15, 2007 Cristiano Ronaldo Portsmouth 1-1 Manchester United Premier League
November 30, 2008 Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United Premier League
December 5, 2009 Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid 4-2 Almeria La Liga
January 24, 2010 Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid 2-0 Malaga La Liga
May 17, 2013 Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid 1-2 Atletico Madrid Copa del Rey
February 2, 2014 Cristiano Ronaldo Athletic Club 1-1 Real Madrid La Liga
January 24, 2015 Cristiano Ronaldo Cordoba 1-2 Real Madrid La Liga
August 13, 2017 Cristiano Ronaldo Barcelona 1-3 Real Madrid Supercopa
September 19, 2018 Cristiano Ronaldo Valencia 0-2 Juventus Champions League
July 6, 2019 Lionel Messi Argentina 2-1 Chile Copa America

Messi’s first red card came on his Argentina debut against Hungary in 2005. The Blaugrana star replaced Lisandro Lopez on the 64th minute, but his international bow ended after just two minutes when the then-18-year-old was deemed to have struck Vilmos Vanczak – who was pulling the attacker’s shirt. He has never been sent off while representing Barcelona.

By contrast, Ronaldo has been sent off on multiple occasions while playing for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Notably, the Portuguese has shown himself to be somewhat prone to losing his cool in derby matches.

For example, while playing for the Red Devils, Ronaldo was sent off in Manchester derbies in 2006 and 2008, a totally reckless foul on former Man Utd legend Andy Cole earning him his marching orders on the first occasion.

During his time at Real Madrid, Ronaldo was sent off in the 2013 Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid, a game in which he also scored, but one that Los Blancos ultimately lost.

He also has the distinction of being sent off in a Clasico match, having been shown red in the first leg of the 2017 Supercopa de Espana, which was a classic in the Messi vs Ronaldo genre.

When Ronaldo put Real Madrid 2-1 up on the 80th minute – incidentally cancelling out Messi’s equaliser three minutes before – the Portuguese removed his shirt and held it up to the Camp Nou crowd in defiance.

Of course, that shirtless display of provocation earned him a booking and the Catalan crowd were given some solace two minutes later when referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea showed the Madrid man a second yellow for diving.

A red card famously reduced Ronaldo to tears in 2018 when he was sent off less than half-an-hour into his first ever Champions League match for Juventus.

With 29 minutes on the clock against Valencia at Mestalla, the Portuguese collided with Jeison Murillo and the altercation resulted in referee Felix Brych showing the Juve forward a red card.

Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo: Red cards head-to-head

Player Number of red cards Straight red cards
Lionel Messi 2 2
Cristiano Ronaldo 11 7

As you can see from the tables above, Ronaldo has a much poorer disciplinary record than Messi, with 11 red cards being shown to him during the course of his senior career against the Argentine’s two.

Of Ronaldo’s 11 red cards, four came at Manchester United, six were shown when he wore the colours of Real Madrid and one came in a Juventus shirt. Seven of those dismissals were straight reds.

Arsenal target Tierney billed as better than Van Dijk by former Celtic boss

Ronny Deila, who handed the highly-rated left-back his debut for the Scottish champions, believes he boasts greater potential than a Liverpool star

Kieran Tierney has been billed as better than Virgil van Dijk by former Celtic boss Ronny Deila, with Arsenal told they would be getting a “really, really good” player if a deal can be done.

The Gunners have indentified the Scotland international left-back as a top target for the summer transfer window.

It has been confirmed to Goal that an offer from Emirates Stadium for the 22-year-old defender worth £25 million ($31m) has been knocked back by Celtic.

Deila can understand why the Scottish champions are eager to hold out for the best possible deal, with Tierney a player that boasts greater potential than a former Hoops star currently starring for Liverpool on the back of a record-breaking £75m ($93m) transfer.

The Norwegian coach, who handed Tierney his Hoops debut back in 2015, told the Scottish Sun: “Kieran would be really, really good at Arsenal — I know it.

“He needs to improve a little bit technically, still. But at the same time he has everything else already and will learn the rest.

“I think Kieran has an even better mentality than Virgil. That’s what I saw at that time.

“Virgil, of course, has gone on to a different level since leaving Celtic, but at the time I worked with them both Kieran was even better.

“They both had the physical attributes to play at the highest level. Virgil had everything. But Tierney has the same.”

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be tabling a third bid in their efforts to prise Tierney away from Parkhead.

Gunners boss Unai Emery has called for patience from supporters of his club as they endeavour to get fresh faces on board.

Celtic, meanwhile, are waiting to discover whether they will be left with a sizeable void to fill in their squad and how much they will have to spend if a prized asset is lured down to north London.

There have been calls for all concerned to find a resolution to a long-running saga as quickly as possible, with the current uncertainty doing nobody any favours.

Manchester City 'a little bit surprised' by Klopp's transfer comments

The Liverpool manager’s opinion on City’s spending habits is “not correct,” according to the club’s chief operating officer

Manchester City have been left bemused after Jurgen Klopp claimed Liverpool do not inhabit the same transfer ‘fantasy land’ as the Premier League champions.

City’s chief operating officer, Omar Berrada, described the comments as “curious” after Klopp grouped them with Barcelona , Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in terms of sustained squad investment.

“It looks like there are four clubs in the world who can do it constantly. Madrid, Barcelona, City and PSG. You cannot compare that,” the German said earlier this week.

Liverpool have signed two teenagers – Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott – since winning the Champions League, while City broke their club-record fee to secure midfielder Rodri from Atletico Madrid.

Pep Guardiola has suggested he would like to bring in another defender at Etihad Stadium before the August 8 deadline , but Klopp is unlikely to add any extra recruits at Anfield.

“We were a little bit surprised,” Berrada said. “Liverpool are a great sporting rival.

“I don’t know why they would make these comments. I don’t know why they would look at other clubs. It’s not frustration or anger, we just find it curious that they’d be highlighting our spending.

“We’re fine with their spending. The reality is that all the top clubs invest as they see fit.

“Saying us, PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona always invest £200 million is not correct. We don’t look at what others do.”

Liverpool themselves spent over £100 million ($121m) on Alisson, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri prior to the start of last season, which saw them finish as runners-up to City in the Premier League.

Guardiola’s side successfully defended their crown by the narrowest of margins, while also winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to complete an unprecedented treble.

The two clubs face each other in the Community Shield on Sunday, with the 2019-20 campaign set to kick off five days later.

The curtain raiser will see Liverpool host newly-promoted Norwich at Anfield, with City set to open their season with a trip to West Ham on August 10.

Roma and Monaco set to battle for Arsenal target Rugani

The centre-back has fallen down the pecking order for Juventus but still has plenty of options despite missing out on a move to join the Gunners

Daniele Rugani looks set to leave Juventus this summer, with Ligue 1 outfit Monaco joining Roma in the chase for the centre-back.

Rugani was a target for Premier League club Arsenal, though Juventus turned down a two-year loan deal for the 25-year-old.

With the Premier League transfer deadline having passed, the options for the centre-back must now come from the rest of Europe, but he still seems to have plenty of suitors for his services.

Roma remain long-time admirers of the former Empoli star and are currently leading the chase for his signature, but the Serie A side will have some competition from Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Sources have confirmed to Goal that Monaco have started asking about Rugani’s availability, though negotiations of an actual deal have yet to take place between the two sides.

The centre-back would address a need for either Roma or Monaco, with the Serie A side having shipped 48 goals in 38 league matches last season while finishing sixth.

Monaco’s record at the back was far worse as the club struggled through a terrible season in Ligue 1, letting in 58 goals and finishing just above the relegation zone.

Rugani’s place with Juventus is up in the air at the moment, with the club boasting Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci as first-choice centre-backs.

The club also landed Merih Demiral from Sassulo and Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt this summer, likely leaving him as part of a third-choice lineup.

The defender played just 15 times in Serie A last season, down from 22 the year before, as Juventus cruised to another league title, and could see his minutes fall even more drastically this term.

Despite that, he seems content to stay with the Turin side should a move not get done.

New Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri and Rugani have a good relationship from their time together with Empoli, where Rugani was named to the Serie A team of the year.

Juventus get their title defence under way on August 24 against Parma in what will be Sarri’s first official test as boss.

The club will then face last year’s runners-up, Napoli, in their second match of the Serie A season on August 31.

Trump touts support for Bahamas as crews scramble to rescue survivors

President TrumpDonald John TrumpPompeo pressed on possible Senate run by Kansas media The Hill’s 12:30 Report: Trump digs in on Hurricane Dorian projection Trump’s mental decline is perfectly clear for those with eyes to see and ears to hear MORE on Saturday emphasized the United States’ support for the Bahamas as crews in the Caribbean islands rushed to rescue survivors following devastation from Hurricane Dorian.

Trump took to Twitter to thank Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis for his “very gracious and kind words in saying that without the help of the United States and me, their [sic] would have been many more casualties.”

“I give all credit to FEMA, the U.S. Coast Guard, & the brave people of the Bahamas,” Trump tweeted, adding that there was “much work to be done by the Bahamian Government. We will help!”

Minnis on Thursday night had praised the United States for “assisting us with all of our needs” after the islands were struck by Dorian, and said the U.S. help likely lowered the death toll.

“From day one, the United States was in our territory assisting us with all of our needs. Had it not been for the United States we would not have been advanced this far in the entire process,” Minnis said in a CNN interview.

“Even though our death numbers, we expect they [will] increase, had the United States not come in quickly … our death numbers would be even more,” he added.

Trump’s tweets Saturday morning came as crews in the Bahamas were scrambling to rescue survivors of the storm, which made landfall in the islands early this week as a Category 5 storm, leaving widespread wreckage.

Some 43 people have been confirmed dead, including 35 in the Abaco Islands and eight in Grand Bahama, according to The Washington Post, though thousands were thought to be missing and the death toll was expected to rise.

“We acknowledge that there are many missing and that the number of deaths is expected to significantly increase,” Minnis said in a statement late Friday. “This is one of the stark realities we are facing in this hour of darkness.”

The U.S. Coast Guard has helicopters and cutters aiding in recovery efforts, along with 1,000 members ready to assist with relief efforts in the area and across the southeastern U.S. following the storm, The Post noted.

“I want to give my warmest, best wishes to the people of the Bahamas, I know what you’re going through, I spoke with your prime minister yesterday and he’s absolutely devastated,” Trump said in a video tweeted Friday night.

“It looks like the numbers are going to be far worse than anybody thought,” he said.

Trump noted that the U.S. wasn’t “hit nearly as hard as was thought” as a result of the storm, adding, “The Bahamas, you got hit very, very hard.”

Trump on Saturday also took the opportunity to thank Doug Manchester, a San Diego businessman and early Trump supporter who he nominated more than two years ago to be ambassador to the Bahamas but has yet to be confirmed.

Manchester’s nomination was first submitted to the Senate in May 2017. He appeared with other Trump ambassadorial nominees for a panel before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in June.

“I would also like to thank ‘Papa’ Doug Manchester, hopefully the next Ambassador to the Bahamas, for the incredible amount of time, money and passion he has spent on helping to bring safety to the Bahamas,” Trump wrote Saturday.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas is currently overseen by Chargé d’Affaires Stephanie Bowers.

Bad news for Ozil? How Arsenal will line up with Ceballos

The Real Madrid attacking midfielder has completed a loan move to the Emirates Stadium – so how will manager Unai Emery utilise the Spain star?

It has been a frustrating transfer window so far for Arsenal, but those frustrations will soon be eased with two new arrivals set to come through the door at the Emirates.

Fans will have to wait a little longer to see one of them, William Saliba, in action – as the 18-year-old defender will immediately return to Saint-Etienne upon completion of his £27 million move, spending the coming season there on loan.

But the other arrival supporters will be able to enjoy from the off. And for anyone who watched this summer’s European Under 21 Championship and saw how Dani Ceballos performed during Spain’s march to the title, then they will know that ‘enjoy’ is the correct turn of phrase.

Ceballos is an exciting young talent, arguably one of the finest in football right now, but he needs to play regularly after a couple of frustrating seasons with Real Madrid.

He was hailed as the next big thing when he made his £14.75 million move to the Bernabeu from Real Betis in 2017, having just walked away with the Golden Player award at the 2017 European Under-21 Championship.

A delighted Florentino Perez predicted, “Dani will be a pillar of the club for the future.

“Through his humility, hard work and sheer talent, he was recently named best player at the Euro Under-21 Championship.

“Now the real challenge starts, and you must succeed at this club for you, your family and for our fans all around the world, who are already fully convinced of your talents. The fans will back you to the hilt.”

But Ceballos has struggled to force his way into the starting XI at Madrid, with Zinedine Zidane unconvinced at the time of the playmaker’s arrival that he was a necessary addition to his squad.

He made just four La Liga starts in what he describes as a “lost” first season, but things started to look up when Zidane left in the summer of 2018.

The 22-year-old started to play far more regularly under Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari, only for Zidane’s return in March to leave him looking in from the outside once again.

A move away has looked like Ceballos’ only option for some time – and now t hat move has been completed .

It had looked like the Spaniard would be heading for Spurs, but an intervention from Unai Emery has seen him instead agree to spend the coming season on loan at Arsenal.

It’s a deal Arsenal have identified as low-risk, with the north London club having to pay a relatively low loan fee as well as the player’s £3m a year wages to bring him to the Premier League.

With transfer funds limited at the Emirates, the move has been seen as a no brainer, even though it does not include any sort of option to land Ceballos on a permanent basis once the loan expires.

Speaking in the United States ahead of Arsenal’s game with Madrid in Washington, Emery said: “Ceballos is a very good player, I know him from Betis at the beginning and also at Real Madrid.

“He played very well with the under-21s, they won with his national team in this competition.”

When asked where he saw Ceballos fitting in at Arsenal, he added: “He is a No.8 or No.10 player.”

Ceballos’ arrival is certainly a welcome one for Emery, who has seen the club struggle to land his key targets this summer – with negotiations for Wilfried Zaha and Keiran Tierney both currently deadlocked with Crystal Palace and Celtic, respectively.

Both players want to move to the Emirates, but Arsenal’s financial limitations caused by their mammoth wage bill and a third successive season outside of the Champions League are making talks difficult.

So with less than three weeks to go before deadline day, alternatives are being explored.

That’s why wrapping up a move for Ceballos will be a big boost to Emery, who is well versed in the options the former Real Betis man will give him.

Emery has shown that he is a coach who likes to use different systems, depending on the opposition – and Ceballos fits in to a number of these.

He has starred as a No.10 before and could comfortably slot into that role at Arsenal, should Emery look to revert back to his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation for the coming season.

Ceballos could sit behind the central striker, supplying the ammunition for either Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette to thrive on.

Arsenal spent the majority of the second half of last season playing a 3-4-1-2 formation, however, but again he could be the man operating behind the two central strikers.

But Ceballos is far from a player who just sits in the final third looking to play the killer pass. In fact, he is more of a box-to-box central midfielder – someone who displays a good work ethic and tends to start a bit deeper before driving forward with the ball at his feet.

So he could be more of an Aaron Ramsey replacement, someone who is better served playing in a midfield three – potentially sitting in a slightly more advanced role with Granit Xhaka and one of either Lucas Torreira or Matteo Guendouzi just behind him.

He may not provide as much of a goal threat as Ramsey – or get himself into the box with as much regularity as the Welshman – but his quality on the ball and his willingness to run with it from deep should provide plenty of space and chances for the forwards in front of him.

This all begs the question, however, of what does Emery have planned for Mesut Ozil? The German’s struggles last season were well documented and it’s no secret that Arsenal would have liked to have moved the 30-year-old on this summer.

But Ozil still has two years left on his £350,000-a-week contract and has never even entertained the thought of leaving, so he will be at the club for another season at the very least.

Ceballos will be given some time to adjust to his new surroundings by Emery. Arsenal’s head coach has shown already he wants his new signings to earn a place in the starting XI rather than just be handed one.

So it might take a few weeks, but when he is up to speed it’s tough to envisage both Ceballos and Ozil operating in the same side on a regular basis.

To get the best out of Ceballos, it looks like Emery might have to move away from playing a strict No.10 in a 4-2-3-1 or a 3-4-1-2 formation and move towards a 4-3-3. This is a system that will be far easier to implement should Arsenal manage to get a deal over the line for Zaha, or another winger, in the coming weeks.

Ozil has played out wide at times during his Arsenal career and could fill in there if needed, but it’s far from his favoured position and he often leaves the full-back with very little protection when operating in that role.

There are still plenty of question marks surrounding the make-up of Arsenal’s squad going into the new season, even at this late stage of the summer, but the arrival of the mercurial Ceballos certainly gives Emery some much needed options.

It may only prove to be a brief stay for the Real Madrid star in north London, but it promises to be a stay that is fun to watch.

Will Bale now get a second chance at Real Madrid after Asensio injury blow?

The winger’s ACL injury could disrupt his side’s summer plans, with the Welshman, Lucas Vazquez and Brahim Diaz waiting to discover their futures

The confirmation on Wednesday that Marco Asensio ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Arsenal comes as a huge blow for Real Madrid.

Not only will the 23-year-old’s absence hinder coach Zinedine Zidane’s plans for the coming season, but there is the potential for it to disrupt the club’s objectives in the summer transfer window.

The Spain international lasted just 20 minutes in the International Champions Cup clash against the Gunners before he was stretchered off and taken to hospital, having gone down after tussling with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Medical tests confirmed that Asensio will require an operation and he will now be out of action for several months.

While Madrid have a selection of wingers available in the squad, Asensio’s injury deprives them of an important player who made 44 appearances in all competitions last season.

And although Asensio, Zidane and the Madrid fans will be devastated by Wednesday’s update, there is a list of fringe players who could be brought back into the frame ahead of the new season.

Of course, Eden Hazard and Vinicius Junior are secure of their spots in Zidane’s team, but all other wingers at the club face an uncertain future in the Spanish capital.

Brahim Diaz , Takefusa Kubo and Rodrygo are all in an uncertain situation at the Santiago Bernabeu and the club are analysing the trio in detail to decide whether to keep them in the first team, drop them to the Castilla side or ship them out to another club.

Madrid are, however, reluctant to let them leave permanently due to their age and talent, and it seems Asensio’s injury could see at least one of them now given a chance as part of Zidane’s squad for 2019-20.

Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez , meanwhile, could also end up staying put.

Zidane has made it clear that he wants the Wales star, who scored on his return to the team in the penalty shoot-out win over Arsenal, gone as soon as possible, with Madrid having been working on a deal to offload him amid reports of a lucrative offer from China.

Bale’s departure is proving to be complicated, however, and with his contract running until 2022, he could well remain a Madrid player for another season, especially with Asensio’s injury now factored in.

Vazquez is another who is keen to stay put and while his situation is less delicate than that of Bale’s, the 28-year-old may find it mutually beneficial if he were to leave, with Madrid keen to raise funds following a €315 million (£284m/$353m) summer splurge.

There is also James Rodriguez to consider although the Colombia international should not see his departure from Madrid blocked with Los Blancos in talks with Napoli and Atletico Madrid also keen on the former Monaco star.

Similarly, sources have told Goal that the injury to Asensio should not impact Dani Ceballos‘s loan move to Arsenal, which is due to be announced imminently.

'There could be two major purchases' – Napoli boss Ancelotti expecting further transfer activity

The Serie A side have been linked with a move for James Rodriguez, as they look to keep up with defending champions Juventus

Napoli manager Carlo Ancelotti is hoping that his side will make two more major signings before the transfer window closes.

Ancelotti has already seen his club make one major signing this summer, with Greek defender Kostas Manolas arriving from Roma for €36 million (‎£32m/$41m).

But with eight-time defending champions Juventus continuing to strengthen, having signed Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax this week among a host of other moves, Ancelotti knows his team must continue to add players as well.

Ancelotti, whose side finished in second place last term, 11 points back of Juventus, is expecting his team to do just that.

“There could be two major purchases,” Ancelotti told TV Luna after a 5-0 friendly win over Serie C side Feralpisalo.

“The board takes care of the market,” the Italian continued. “We have very competent people who know what the team needs. On August 31 we will all be happy.”

Napoli have been continually linked with a move for Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez, whom Ancelotti managed at the Bernabeu as well as with Bayern Munich.

Ancelotti is hopeful that a deal can get done, but has stressed that negotiations for the 28-year-old could take a “very long time.”

Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurntiis said earlier in the month that Real Madrid’s demands for the player were unreasonable.

The deal has been further complicated by Atletico Madrid’s interest in the former Monaco man, who won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup.

James himself is thought to be keen to reunite with Ancelotti.

In addition to the Colombian star, Napoli have also been linked with Inter’s Mauro Icardi and Lille winger Nicolas Pepe as attacking options.

Ancelotti is also keen to keep some of his side’s key players from departing, including left-back Mario Rui, who started 17 league matches for Napoli last term.

“Mario Rui is not for sale,” Ancelotti said. “With [Faouzi] Ghoulam they form a solid and well-knit pair. He had a good season last year and we have no intention of letting him leave.”

Napoli continue pre-season preparations on Wednesday with a game against Cremonese, before they take on European champions Liverpool next Sunday.
