Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Footwear

The strength of this year’s NAS was the footwear assortment, and this is reflected in my client’s purchases and my own. The anniversary offerings in designer salon shoes continues to be disappointing, perhaps because the brands prefer to keep their items exclusive. But there was fabulous footwear across more affordable price points, with ample variety across silhouette, colour, lifestyle and weather conditions. There are lots of comfortable and practical options that look great too. I’m pleased to see an assortment of brown, cream and red shoes as opposed to the usual black and grey. Extended sizes and widths are offered, and so are manageable heel heights.

  • Cole Haan Cole Haan GrandPro Spectator Scalloped Slip-On Sneaker (Women) | Nordstrom: EXTREMELY lightweight and comfy. Pretty in the pink. Sleek without the laces. Can work on a wider foot if you size up. All the colours are nice.
  • Eileen Fisher Eileen Fisher Tilda Stacked Heel Pump (Women) | Nordstrom: Amazingly clean and stable fit on a range of foot shapes. Very comfortable and flattering IF you can handle the heel height. Comes in four colours. The red and black look great worn with black hosiery.
  • La Canadienne La Canadienne ‘Stefanie’ Waterproof Boot (Women) | Nordstrom: THE pair of of boots for very narrow calves, but too high in the shaft for petites. Comfy and weatherproof. Classic.
  • Paul Green Sofia Loafer: The favourite chunky loafer of the sale. Comfy, hard-edged, and fit narrower heels. Works on wider feet because of a forgiving toe box. Impeccable quality. All three colours are fab.
  • Munro Munro Lulu Slip-On Sneaker (Women) | Nordstrom: EXTREMELY comfortable and sleek slip-on sneaks. WOW. If they came in white, they would be mine. The medium width runs narrow, but wide widths are available. I liked all the colours.
  • 1.State Loka Studded Bootie: This bootie looked best in grey and is moderately comfy. Best on regular volume feet. Okay on high insteps if you size up. A sleek party on your feet.
  • Dolce Vita Dolce Vita Tommi Perforated Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: BEST bootie at the NAS. EXTREMELY comfy, works on low and high-volume feet, softer than butter, and visually interesting. Works on narrower and wider ankles. Can be worn with fun socks, hose, footies or barefoot. Well made. Comes in grey and black, and the cognac followed me home.
  • Aquatalia Letizia Weatherproof Boot: A beautiful weatherproof tall boot that is dressier than a riding boot. It’s not as slim-fitting on the calves as the brand usually is which was disappointing. Impeccable quality and a good fit nonetheless. Works on low and regular volume feet. The brown gets my top vote. There is style life after black boots.
  • Børn Børn Cardi Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: EXTREMELY comfy and cushioning. Quite supportive, and works on both lower and higher volume feet. Size up for higher volume feet. They are a snug enough fit for narrower ankles. They followed almost every client home in the black or brown. They are mine in the brown.
  • Aquatalia Aquatalia Carie Weatherproof Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: Sleek, weatherproof and fabulous on lower volume feet. They will work on high arches and insteps as long as your feet aren’t wide. They’re comfy if you can manage the heel height. VERY sleek on the ankle and calf. Gorgeous with skirts and dresses. All three colours are fab. Like the fresh snip toe.
  • PIKOLINOS PIKOLINOS Pyrgos Oxford (Women) | Nordstrom: BEST oxford at the sale. Extremely comfortable, and works on a variety of foot shapes. The white sole prevents the shoe from looking too masculine. Comes in four colours. Impeccable quality. The cognac followed me home.
  • SARTO By Franco Sarto SARTO by Franco Sarto Lowe Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: A moderately comfy pointy toe that’s excellent under long-length classic flares and bell-bottoms. Ankle gape on narrow ankles.
  • SARTO By Franco Sarto SARTO by Franco Sarto Topaz Flat (Women) | Nordstrom: Snakeskin Dandy Witchy Fabness. I vote these most eccentric and fashion-forward shoe of the sale. They come in navy feathers, and an ombré leopard print online. They look long, witchy and pointy on the foot, but are dainty and smashing somehow. Quite supportive and comfortable, although I’d have preferred them a little softer. Fit is best on higher volume feet – they are wide – and can accommodate gentle bunions. I tried to make them work with an insole, but alas they are too wide.
  • AGL AGL Block Heel Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: Buttery soft leather in a classic style that goes the distance. Works on a variety of foot shapes, and might run a size big. Glides comfortably over bunions, and works on narrow ankles.
  • AGL AGL Pointy Toe Mule (Women) | Nordstrom: BEST dressy mule at the sale. Works best on higher volume feet. Comes in a pretty white, and is as soft as our silky Sam. Looks elegant on the foot, extremely comfortable. Comes in black. Impeccable quality.
  • Cole Haan Cole Haan Harrington Grand Buckle Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: Comfy no-nonsense leopard bootie. Cushioning and supportive. Quite the maximal statement on the foot so consider yourself warned.
  • UGG UGG Simmens Waterproof Leather Boot (Women) | Nordstrom: Very casual, weatherproof, and extremely comfy. They skew masculine on the foot so watch for that if boyish looks are not your cup of tea. Read the rave reviews.
  • Ecco ECCO Soft 7 Center Zip Sneaker (Women) | Nordstrom: BEST sneaker at the sale. ECCO’s are amazingly comfy, and these are a pretty grey that look soft and fashionable. A client with very high insteps rocked them unzipped. Impeccable quality.
  • Sam Edelman Sam Edelman Chesney Loafer (Women) | Nordstrom: BEST hard-edged flat at the sale. Extremely comfortable and softer than butter. Quite supportive, stable and a statement piece. Comes in white. Works on lower and higher volume feet, and with bunions. Size down half a size. Party on your feet.
  • Rebecca Minkoff Koso Bootie: Mega ’80s Fabness, and the trendiest shoe at the sale. They are not buttery soft, but I hope comfortable enough for my own fussy feet, AND I’ll add a cushioning insole. They are a good fit on narrow ankles, and come in three colours. The red and black are as smashing as the white. Great low heel height. I can see them work well with straight legs, bootcuts and flares, and full-length skinnnes. Might throw them in with the crops too.
  • Sperry Sperry Shearwater Water-Resistant Boot (Women) | Nordstrom: A classic favourite for snowy weather. Works well on wider feet and looks quite streamlined on the leg – which duck boots often don’t. Read the rave reviews.
  • Cole Haan GrandPro Tennis Shoe: Super cute camouflage sneakers that are as light as a feather. Extremely comfortable and comes in two shades of metallic camouflage. For the Magpies.
  • Munro Munro Ana Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: AMAZINGLY comfortable, sleek and simple. Do not underestimate the power of this type of look. Well made and very clean. Best on a wider ankle.
  • MARC FISHER LTD Marc Fisher LTD Yente Chelsea Boot (Women) | Nordstrom: These are most comfortable in the suede, and work best on lower volume feet. Great heel height and clean fit. Blingy.
  • UGG UGG Pasqual Boot (Women) | Nordstrom: SUPER easy, comfy, warm and weatherproof. There is a time and place for this type of boot. Comes in black.
  • AGL AGL Smoking Slipper (Women) | Nordstrom: BEST dressy flat at the sale. Almost every client came home with these, and some in a few colours. The suede can be treated, and the navy is the yummiest. Works on gentle bunions, and looks chic and trendy. Comfy and flattering. Works well on larger feet.
  • Blondo Blondo Varta Waterproof Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: The best Blondo bootie at the sale if you like a low or flat heel, and a classic bootie style. Size up because they are short in the toe box. Best on lower volume feet.
  • Halogen Halogen Sadie Slingback Flat (Women) | Nordstrom: A dainty little Summer slingback that feels more stable on the foot than it looks. Comes in five colours (there is a leopard print too). The suede is the most comfortable. Wide toe box.
  • Eileen Fisher Eileen Fisher Hutton Ankle Strap Shoe (Women) | Nordstrom: A rare find that works on lower AND higher volume feet. Comes in three colours, and is very comfy. Elegant and pretty. Best on a narrower ankle. A substantial sole that does not feel too close to the ground.
  • Paul Green Paul Green Sheridan Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: Fabulous looking bootie on the foot, and in the prettiest shade of sand (they are NOT grey as the description reads). Buckled yet streamlined. Works on lower and higher volume feet if you manipulate the size. Impeccable quality.
  • Blondo Blondo Lila Waterproof Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: A simple black bootie that streamlines an outfit and does not draw attention to your feet. Weatherproof and quite comfy, but narrower in the toe box. Best on lower volume feet.
  • Paul Green Paul Green Stella Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: GORGEOUS bootie on the foot, and very comfortable if you can manage the heel height. Sharp, streamlined and chic. Make sure you are comfortable in three inch heels and do not be seduced by how fabulous they look in the mirror. Impeccable quality.
  • Aquatalia Aquatalia Fiamma Weatherproof Bootie (Women) | Nordstrom: These were tricky. They either looked fably sleek, or dodgy. Either way, they are comfortable, weatherproof and well made. Work on low and regular volume feet. I preferred them on a wider ankle, and all the colours are nice.
  • PUMA PUMA IGNITE Flash evoKNIT Training Shoe (Women) | Nordstrom: A spongy and supportive slip-on trainer that’s like walking on clouds. Peach colourway is nice too.
  • Nike Nike Blazer Low Essential Sneaker (Women) | Nordstrom: A Trendy Classic that can be worn with just about anything these days since we are a sneaker generation. Very comfy. Works best on wider feet.

How to choose a Caribbean island

The dozens of islands scattered across the Caribbean are a remarkably diverse lot. Pulsing Jamaica has little in common with group-filled Aruba, and even islands in plain sight of each other like St Kitts and Nevis are vastly different not just in appearance but in what they offer visitors.

So for the Caribbean-bound visitor, which island among the many to choose? Big or little, near or far, urban or lost are among the many considerations that can turn choosing a carefree holiday into a perplexing chore.

Happily, our Caribbean Islands primer can take the pain out of choosing what’s right for you. We’ve got the low-down on all the most-visited islands, complete with what’s best about each one, and we’ve categorized them by their ease of access, so if your time is short you can prioritize beach time over airport time.

Each Caribbean Island offers something completely unique © Anna Jedynak/ Shutterstock

Easy access (multiple direct flights from US and Canada)

Aruba

Arid and nearly featureless, Aruba’s main attraction is a ribbon of beaches lined with big world-class resorts and backed up with malls of familiar restaurants and bars.

  • Best for: Holidays requiring no thinking at all
  • Highlight: Natural Pool

The Bahamas

Offering the myriad choices of the Caribbean in a microcosm close to the US, the 700 islands of the Bahamas have far-flung hideaways and glossy mega-resorts.

  • Best for: Island-hopping explorers, divers, partiers, Americans needing a quick escape
  • Highlight: Harbour Island

Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman is reminiscent of South Florida, only more orderly and with less traffic. It offers resorts of all stripes, tax shelters and famous diving, snorkeling and swimming with schools of stingrays.

  • Best for: Hassle-free holidays in what might seem like the 51st state, watersports
  • Highlight: USS Kittiwake

Dominican Republic

A large country with a dominant Hispanic culture, DR (as it’s called) has world-class resorts on fine beaches, lots of colonial-era history and untrammeled inland areas with forbidding peaks.

  • Best for: Resort-seekers, adventurers
  • Highlight: Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial

The island of Jamaica offers a heady cultural cocktail © Rawpixel / Getty Images

Jamaica

Seemingly the center of Caribbean clichés such as Bob Marley songs played to the rhythm of opening beer bottles, vast Jamaica offers up resorts from posh to lurid and a distinct urban culture.

  • Best for: Spicy food, spicy music, resort holidays, urban and natural adventures, quick trips from the US
  • Highlight: Blue Mountain Peak

Puerto Rico

Old San Juan is one of the great highlights of the region, a sprawling colonial throw-back that buzzes with a lively vibe. Big beach resorts, casinos, tangible history and rich Hispanic culture are the highlights.

  • Best for: Explorations beyond sun, sand and sea, not leaving the US
  • Highlight: El Yunque National Forest

St-Martin/Sint Maarten

Two distinct cultures, Dutch and French, share space on this smallish and very lively island. Like a brain these two hemispheres are greater in sum than in parts: the French offer holidays with reserve while the Dutch party down.

  • Best for: Midrange-hotel holidays, daytrips into France, the Netherlands and the heart of Creole culture, the wildest airport bar on Earth
  • Highlight: Îlet Pinel

US Virgin Islands

The first Caribbean stop for many Americans has all the comforts – and familiar names – of home. St Thomas is commercial but St John and St Croix offer more natural and cultural allures.

  • Best for: Americans who don’t have passports, mega-resort-lovers, nature-lovers
  • Highlight: Virgin Islands National Park

Anguilla boasts some of the best beaches in the Caribbean © Shalamov / Getty Images

Farther afield (requiring a transfer or less frequent direct flights)

Anguilla

In a sea of beaches that set the standard for beachy clichés, the beaches on this tiny island are the definitive versions. Small, with an amiable local culture and luxurious villas scattered about.

  • Best for: Luxurious but low-key holidays, isolation
  • Highlight: Shoal Bay East

Antigua

Lots of little beaches ringing this medium-sized island are lined with resorts large and small, modest and lavish. English Harbour offers yachtie hijinks and diverting colonial heritage.

  • Best for: Resort holidays with a couple of day trips
  • Highlight: Half Moon Bay

Barbados

British accents are common on this tidy, medium-sized island right on the edge of the Atlantic. Various beaches ideal for surfers, wind-surfers, budget sunbathers and traditional types who dress for dinner ring a truly welcoming island. Like some other ex-British colonial islands such as Antigua, Barbados has non-stop services from London in high season.

  • Best for: Any budget, activities, people who pack linen suits
  • Highlight: Bridgetown

Bonaire

One of the most interesting islands in the southern Caribbean, tiny Bonaire is justly famous for its spectacular diving right offshore. It also has a fascinating history and a winning and walkable main city of Kralendijk.

  • Best for: Divers, budget travelers, people who like to explore but don’t want a lot to explore
  • Highlight: Lac Bay

The British Virgin Islands are a true yachtie’s paradise © Cdwheatley / Getty Images

British Virgin Islands

The BVIs are a richer, less-developed and more isolated version of the US Virgin Islands. Yachties and divers find their bliss amongst the 40 islands here; the main island, Tortola, offers glam diversions.

  • Best for: Divers and snorkelers, sunset cocktail parties, people who prefer the motion of the ocean
  • Highlight: The Baths

Cuba

Weirdly, wildly wonderful: a time-capsule of a vanished Caribbean on a huge island unlike any other. Cuba offers famous music, political challenges and disintegrating urban beauty. Havana alone is worth days of exploration amidst a paucity of frills. Watch for new flights as travel restrictions ease.

  • Best for: Reasonably priced holidays in a truly ‘foreign’ country, adventurers and explorers, bragging rights
  • Highlight: Viñales Valley

Curaçao

A medium-sized island with a focus beyond tourism. The main city of Willemstad has a justifiably famous, beautiful and historic harbor. Isolated beaches scattered about offer a few watery pleasures.

  • Best for: Off-the-beaten track wanderings, urban rambles
  • Highlight: Playa Portomari

The picturesque village of Scotts Head, Dominica © htomas / Getty Images

Dominica

Lacking the plethora of beaches found elsewhere, Dominica is the region’s unspoiled gem with peaks and valleys swathed in rain forest and accented by waterfalls.

  • Best for: Climbers and trekkers, nature-lovers, people who want an escape from Caribbean clichés
  • Highlight: Ti Tou Gorge

Grenada

You really can smell nutmeg in the air of this small ex-British colony which has one of the region’s most interesting capitals, St George’s. Small and inviting beaches vie with rainforest-clad hills for attention.

  • Best for: Low-key holidays in beautiful natural surroundings, mixing with genial locals
  • Highlight: Underwater Sculpture Park

Guadeloupe packs a lot of attractions into a small area © Bennymarty / Getty Images

Guadeloupe

French-accented Guadeloupe offers relaxed islands for people who want to travel little, laze on the sand and enjoy especially good food. It packs great beaches and tropical nature in a small package.

  • Best for: A topless day in the sun followed by a splendid seafood dinner
  • Highlight: La Soufrière

Haiti

Haiti offers the opposite of a care-free holiday. Challenges abound on this impoverished island that has suffered through natural disasters, but if you want to explore a rich culture that is the region’s most African, Haiti is for you. Recent improvements at the Cap-Haïtien airport include flights from Miami now serving Haiti’s north coast.

  • Best for: People who travel to learn and explore
  • Highlight: Citadelle Laferrière

Martinique

The most Gallic corner of the Caribbean has a sprawling main town of Fort-de-France and an untouristy focus. Far-flung beaches reward daytrippers.

  • Best for: French-speakers, beautiful and isolated beaches, nature hikes
  • Highlight: Grande Anse des Salines

St Kitts

Paired with Nevis, St Kitts has big hotels and booming condo developments. It’s just large enough for a fun daytrip around the island that includes the vast pirate-era Brimstone Hill Fortress.

  • Best for: Comfortable holidays, daytrips to Nevis, talking like a pirate

Outfit Ideas with Mini Dress

Here are some super easy street style trends you need to sport ASAP – mini dresses. Below are some of most stylish ways to wear this versatile dress.

A pretty dress like this embellished silk mini dress from Fendi doesn’t need much styling. These types of dresses will look great alone, without layers. Simply slip on into t-strap strappy high heels for a sweet and romantic date night outfit.

Mix in fun colors into a simple striped black and white dress. Bold colors like yellow and blue will look absolutely fantastic with a dress like this. Slip on a yellow biker jacket, blue suede sandals and a pretty classic satchel. This look is also appropriate during daytime because of the loud pieces.

Polo mini dresses are becoming such a huge trend. Some women would effortlessly pair it with sliders just to keep the simplicity of the look. The outfit is perfect to wear on boring days that you just can’t be bothered to get up and layer a lot of clothing. Don’t forget to have that one piece of accessory to pull the look together.

Look sexy in a daytime plaid jacquard-knit mini dress but for the evening. Add an open front black blazer, a chain leather shoulder bag and stilettos to complete the look.

Mini garden dress with rainforest print or anything that has minimal prints can easily be styled with sneakers, a cross-body bag, sunglasses and an open metal cuff for an easy and cool outfit for the day.

When it comes to mini dresses, you’ll definitely look great in any type of dress in pink because it’s pretty feminine. Mix any pink dress with sling-back pointed-toe flats and matching bag for added style.

Rock a statement dress alone or with a denim jacket for added chicness. Complete the look with pink high heels for an extra pop of color

An all-black outfit for a badass look.

How about getting a bit of inspiration from Taylor Swift? She’s into vintage-inspired mini dresses and wears them with either flats or high heels.

Here’s another outfit perfect for daytime – pretty in corals in a white saffron baby doll dress, sandals, and a cute handbag that will perfectly match your outfit.

Fab Finds: Tops, Shoes and a Bag

There’s a lot of good stuff out there at the moment, so much so that I’ve finished my own Spring and Summer refresh two months earlier than normal. My clients have been pleased with the more feminine, dressy and less oversized looks in stores, as well as the larger assortment of dresses with sleeves and hem length. Here are some items that have been winners on my clients recently.

1. White House Black Market Floral & Lace Twinset

The photos do not do this great look justice. The high-low blouse paired with the cardigan in the same pattern was SO fab on my client last week that I squealed in the dressing room. Leave the cardigan open in front. Nice quality, unique, easy, pulled together, crease-resistant, flattering and does not need a camisole. Smart casual or business casual. Fluid and tailored in the right places. The blouse is available across petite, regular and plus. The floral cardi is available in petite and regular. Size down.

2. Michael Stars Boat Neck Shine Knit Top

This is a GREAT tailored knit top. Flattering, comfortable, crisp and easy to launder. It’s more like a very light pullover than a tee. Much neater, dressier, and more pulled together and structured than a T-shirt. The fabric is substantial. Sleeve length is excellent. It layers beautifully under jackets, but looks good on its own because of the shine, fab fabric, and good fit. The boat neck is surprisingly bra-friendly. The size range is unfortunate since it comes in two sizes only. The XS/S will fit a US0 to 4, and the M/L will fit a US4 to 8. It runs true to size, and works well on a straighter or curvier body type. It’s long, so not good on petites and short waists unless it’s hemmed to a shorter length. Don’t try the top if you’re self-conscious about your midsection, because it might cling.

I don’t wear T-shirts and stick to blouses, shirts and and knitwear for tops. Very occasionally, I’ll find a knit top that ticks all the boxes, and this one did just that. I bought the white and the stripe to wear with jeans and Summer skirts both untucked and semi-tucked. The neckline works well with my chunky pearl necklaces. I love the subtle shine and the tailored fit. The XS/S is a more fluid fit on me than on the model. All the colours are nice.

3. Madewell Chambray Tops

A chambray top needn’t look like a menswear or cowboy shirt. Madewell has good chambray tops at the moment, and they’re versatile. The fabrics are not stiff and denim-y either. They’re soft, tencel, or cotton/linen blends.

The Wrap Top is fabulous with skirts, and best on those who can fill out the bust and/or shoulders. I looked awful in it because my narrow shoulders, long neck and regular size bust could not fill it out.

The Central Ruffle Sleeve Shirt has more structure around the neck and shoulders and looked much better on my body type, despite the oversized fit. The flutter sleeves also broaden my frame and I like the effect. The fabric is GORGEOUS and drapes very well, and it may have followed me home. Size down a size.

4. Cosima Circle Bag

This bag is very cute. It can be used as a crossbody or satchel. It’s faux leather, well made, relatively affordable, lightweight, and roomier than it looks. All the colours are nice, and not as bright in person as in the pictures.

5. Hispanita Footwear

I can’t rave enough about Hispanita footwear. Made in Spain, the aesthetic is Euro and somewhat Mediterranean. Refined and dressy, and with many walkable heel heights and silhouettes that are a little different to the norm. They are beautifully made, and most of the styles are very comfortable. Super soft leather, a cushioning footbed, enough support, and room for an orthotic if your feet aren’t too wide. The styles can fit both a higher and lower volume foot if you go up or down in size — the cut of the shoe is that good. A little pricey but you’re getting a quality item. I bought a pair of floral oxfords last year and they’re smashing. I always have my eye on this brand.

The best detours on Australia’s Great Ocean Road

Wind your way beside the crashing Southern Ocean, twist around hairpin bends hugging limestone cliffs, take pit stops under koala-filled tree canopies, and bask in the sun on secluded beaches on one of Australia’s most spectacular drives: the Great Ocean Road.

While the drive is best known for the iconic Twelve Apostles and famous beaches at Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Lorne and Apollo Bay, many of the region’s treasures are not on the Great Ocean Road itself. It might be hard to tear yourself away from that view, but we recommend you make a detour every now and then and stretch your legs to see historic country towns and lush rainforest where you’ll find native wildlife, Aboriginal cultural experiences and gastronomic delights.

This stunning coastal road (officially the B100) starts on the stretch between the surf town of Torquay and Anglesea, just over an hour from Melbourne, and ribbons its way along the ocean to finish up between Port Campbell and Warrnambool where it meets the Princess Highway (or the A1).

Surfs up on Bells Beach

Although you’ve only just started the road trip, you’ll want to veer off the Great Ocean Road early on to get a look at surfers riding the waves at Bells Beach between Torquay and Anglesea. It’s famous as the home of the annual Rip Curl Pro Surfing competition over Easter (as well as the setting for the beach wrestle between Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in Point Break, although the scene wasn’t actually filmed on location here).

Sacred knowledge of the Wathaurung people

Situated close to Bells Beach, Point Addis is a stunning ‘clothing-optional’ secluded stretch of beach backed by terracotta-coloured cliffs and part of the Point Addis Marine National Park. The excellent Koorie Cultural Walk here will teach you a little about the Wathaurung people, who lived in the region for millennia before Europeans arrived by ship to colonise this country.

The bushwalk takes you on a 2km trail with informative plaques along the route. Keep an eye out for spiky echidnas waddling through the brush and wallabies hopping by, as well as taking in dramatic coastal views from the lookout points.

Surprising golf buddies at Anglesea

The popular seaside town of Anglesea is a magnet for holidaymakers in the summer months for its family-friendly beach and pedal-boat rides on the Anglesea River. But we have a reason to head away from the water and into the residential backstreets: to glimpse the kangaroos who have made the Anglesea Golf Club their home.

Play a round of golf and share the course with the resident population of Eastern Grey kangaroos, or simply join a 30-minute ‘roo tour run by the club.

Misty waters at Erskine Falls near Lorne

Next the road twists and turns to the hugely popular seaside town of Lorne, nestled between tall gum trees on one side and the Loutit Bay on the other. To escape the crowds, take a 9km detour to the lovely Erskine Falls, which tumbles into the Erskine River 30 metres below. There are a couple of lookout options: it’s an easy five-minute walk to the viewing platform from the carpark, otherwise tackle the slightly more precarious 250 steps to the base of the falls in a lush fern gully to feel the mist on your face.

Historic Birregurra

A 30-minute drive inland from Lorne will bring you to the historic town of Birregurra, well worth a detour to wander its charming 19th-century streetscape and to dine at the much-lauded Brae –consistently voted one of the best restaurants in Australia. The restaurant is located just outside the main town in a lovely cottage among 30 acres of gardens with onsite accommodation suites that come with their own cocktail bar, record player and bathtub with nature views. Chef Dan Hunter creates a degustation menu of creative genius using mostly what is grown onsite or sourced locally. Note: you’ll need to reserve a table well in advance.

Mountain biking and platypus spotting at Forrest

While the beachside town of Apollo Bay gets a lot of attention around this part of the Great Ocean Road, it’s definitely worth ducking into the Otways hinterland to the town of Forrest and nearby scenic Lake Elizabeth. Adventure lovers can hire a mountain bike and explore the excellent trails around Forrest, beer lovers can sample cold ales at the Forrest Brewing Company, and nature lovers should not miss out on a guided canoe trip on Lake Elizabeth to spot elusive platypuses in the wild.

Walk in the treetops at Otway National Park

Detour into the ferny gullies and wander among ancient plant life in the beautiful Otway Ranges. This lush national park is home to the popular tourist attraction, Otway Fly Treetop Adventures, where you can brave the heights among the treetops on an elevated walkway 50 metres above the rainforest floor. There is plenty here to keep kids entertained from the zipline tour to the prehistoric path dotted with dinosaurs.

Give your tastebuds a tour of Timboon

Port Campbell National Park on the Great Ocean Road is the gateway to the iconic Twelve Apostles, which should not be missed. After admiring these magnificent rock formations jutting skyward from the ocean, make the 15-minute drive inland from Port Campbell to the gourmet town of Timboon. Here you can indulge in everything from free cheese tastings at Timboon Cheesery, single-malt whisky at the Timboon Railway Shed Distillery and artisan ice-cream at Timboon Fine Ice Cream, to name a few.

Ancient volcanic caldera at Tower Hill

Though technically the Great Ocean Road becomes the Princes Hwy around here, you won’t want to miss out on a detour some 15km from the town of Warrnambool to the vast caldera of Tower Hill that was born in a volcanic eruption 30,000 years ago. It was declared Victoria’s first national park in 1892 and not only does it offer some incredible wildlife watching opportunities – emus, echidnas, koalas, kangaroos and unique Australian birdlife – but it’s an essential stop for anyone with an interest in Australia’s Indigenous history. The Worn Gundidj Aboriginal Cooperative operate the Tower Hill Natural History Centre where you can check out rare Aboriginal artefacts (don’t miss the possum-skin cloak) and join bushwalks led by Indigenous guides.

Link Love: Artisans at Work

I’m very much enjoying “The Artisans“, a photo documentary series on The Guardian website that portrays artists and craftspeople in their working environments to learn more about their processes and working methods. Not all of them are style-related, but they are all wonderful. Have a peek:

Silversmith Shona Marsh creates jewellery and lifestyle objects out of fine metals, woods, crystal and gemstones. The modern and timeless designs are made by hand using traditional silversmithing skills.

Here you can see how a master watchmaker and an antiquarian horologist restore antique and vintage timepieces, and design and build their own watches.

Mid-morning matters: the best places to have brunch in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a city made for foodies, with hundreds of top-notch dining experiences from street food markets to Michelin-starred restaurants to tempt the taste buds. So it’s no surprise that when it comes to the glorious meal that is brunch, the Danish capital has you covered.

Copenhageners love brunching every day of the week, so there’s no need to wait for the weekend to roll around. The only challenge is choosing from one of the many fantastic spots the city has to offer, but you can’t go wrong with these brunch favourites.

Wulff & Konstali

Build the brunch of your dreams at Wulff & Konstali, where diners choose five or seven items from the ever-changing seasonal menu. Tuck into freshly baked pastries, local meats and cheeses, soups, gourmet mini panini, and plenty of fruit and veggie options, as well as a ‘sweet choice’ to finish things off (go for the heart-shaped waffle, currently served with lemon zest cream and salted caramel).

Wulff & Konstali’s colourful fresh juices are the perfect complement to your custom brunch. The fabulous Nørrebro location, with its gleaming robin’s-egg blue tiles and pale wood interior, is the most central of three Wulff & Konstalis, which all serve brunch daily between 9am and 3pm.

Mad & Kaffe

Mad & Kaffe also offers the create-your-own brunch option, with a tempting spread of delicious options to choose from. Select three, five or seven tasty items from the list such as blood orange with tarragon sugar; pork, tomato and chive sausage; and dark chocolate brownie with berries and caramel.

Mad & Kaffe means ‘food and coffee’, so of course they won’t leave you lacking in the java department, using organic espresso beans from Copenhagen Coffee Lab. If you prefer something cold, order a fresh juice, homemade lemonade or iced tea. The original Vesterbro location has an outdoor seating area in the warmer months that is perfect for taking in this lively neighbourhood.

Café Norden

An elegant two-level cafe in a historic building on the Strøget pedestrian street, Café Norden pairs perfectly with your shopping plans. The tasty and filling brunch plate includes a variety of breads with cheeses and homemade jams, fruits, smoked salmon and a wild-card pick such a pancake, eggs and bacon, or avocado. The plate also comes with your choice of both a hot and cold drink, and a massive slice of their cake of the day. Don’t think you can manage all that? Brunch items are also available à la carte.

Møller Kaffe & Køkken

Nørrebro’s Møller Kaffe & Køkken is an all-day brunch paradise – in fact, it’s all they serve. The large but homely dining room is always bustling with happy diners enjoying small dishes made from local organic ingredients. Much of what is offered at Møller is made in-house: sausages, burrata cheese, chocolate-hazelnut spread, delicious panko-breaded chicken nuggets and a heavenly fresh sourdough bread. The drinks are all crafted here as well, with homemade lemonade, kombucha and their own herbal soda called Essence on the menu.

Union Kitchen

Tucked into a quiet street behind iconic Nyhavn, Union Kitchen is a trendy spot popular with locals. Opening bright and early at 7.30am (8am on weekends), brunch runs throughout the day until 4pm. Along with a regular and vegetarian brunch plate, daily offerings range from light choices like granola bowls and avocado toast to hearty fare such as fried chicken and waffle and the ‘Hangover Cheeseburger’, served with truffle fries. For the full brunch experience, sip on a Bloody Mary with bacon, one of the many interesting cocktails Union Kitchen is known for whipping up. On sunny days, enjoy your brunch out front and watch the world go by.

Hyggestund

With comfortable, eclectic decor inside and a large patio set up on the historic street outside in warmer weather, Hyggestund lives up to the hygge – that indefinable Danish cosiness – in its name. Part of the Mikkeller craft brewery family of bars and restaurants, Hyggestund is a cosy, all-day breakfast place inspired by the American diner. Touted as ‘the perfect hangover spot’, Hyggestund serves up homemade donuts, fried chicken, soft buns piled high with bacon and eggs, and hair of the dog in the form of a Beer Geek of the Day.

Grød

Admittedly, it’s not strictly a brunch place, but Grød hits the spot with all-day porridge (until 5pm). This local chain, with small cosy locations in each of Copenhagen’s central neighbourhoods, takes the humble grain to a new level. Order one of their flavourful oatmeal, chia or granola creations (the oat porridge with fresh apple, almonds and caramel sauce is a winner) or build your own bowl with interesting topping choices like sea buckthorn compote, Icelandic yoghurt and cacao nibs to liven up your bowl.
