Monaco has officially confirmed that they have signed Lyon winger Rachid Ghezzal on a contract until 2021.
The 25-year-old was released from Lyon in the summer following the expiration of his deal, but with Monaco in the hunt for a winger he would not be out of work for long. The French champions sold fellow winger Allan Saint-Maximin earlier in the day to Nice, and have seen Ghezzal as his replacement.
“I have the ambition to continue to play at the highest level, so I chose Monaco,” said Ghezzal to the official Monaco website. “I believe in the Monaco project, that they are the French champions and also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League is fantastic. After several years in Lyon, I needed a new challenge. Everything is readily available here to have a successful season.”
Many will look at this signing as Ghezzal coming in as a replacement for Thomas Lemar, who has been heavily linked with Arsenal, but with the departure of Saint-Maximin earlier in the day, it is more likely that the Algerian international will replace him on the sidelines instead of Lemar.
